Chapter 4

Author: Echo
Joren knelt there, comforting the woman in his arms like she was made of fragile glass.

"It's okay, baby," he coaxed softly. "You're too reckless. Don't let an outsider work you up like this."

I clutched my badly bleeding hand, watching them with completely dead eyes.

They were flirting like I wasn't even standing there. It was blindingly sickening. My stomach churned, and I nearly threw up right on the rug.

If this were the old naive me, I would have screamed at him, begging to know why he was doing this.

But now, I didn't want to ask a damn thing. I was just exhausted. I just wanted to get the hell out of this disgusting place.

"Joren, she kept saying this villa is hers!" Chloe whined, pointing at me again. "She even brought guys to kick me out!"

Joren finally looked up.

His eyes landed on me, and he finally noticed the thick blood dripping steadily from my hand.

His gaze fell on me, finally noticing the blood dripping from my hand.

The moment our eyes met, a fleeting panic flashed in his eyes.

"Aria, what are you doing here?"

"Your hand..."

He was about to step toward me, but Chloe grabbed his arm. "Baby, do you know her?"

The neighbors in the hallway were watching the scene curiously, and I just stared at him.

I wanted to know, would he claim me in front of all these people?

But Joren just stayed silent, then turned his head away.

Seeing this, his men standing around smirked mockingly."Boss, who is this chick?" one of them whistled, his words filthy. "Is she a streetwalker looking for a quick job?"

"Hahaha, looks like it! Did she try to get in the Boss's bed, get rejected, and stalk him all the way to his house?"

The vile insults bounced off the high walls.

I stared dead at Joren.

He heard them degrading me to garbage. His face tightened, his lips parted slightly. But in the end, he didn't say a damn word to stop them.

He silently approved of my total humiliation just to protect his tough "Don" image.

The neighbors at the door were having a field day with the drama.

"Just a dumb groupie trying to be a mob wife. How absolutely shameless!"

"Exactly. We've all seen how much Joren loves Miss Chloe. I just saw on her Insta that they're having an engagement party on a private island in Miami next month!"

My pupils constricted sharply.

The Miami island.

So, the so-called "vacation for his loyal men" was actually a secret engagement party for his mistress. Everyone knew but me.

A freezing chill washed over my entire body.

I was so goddamn stupid. Ten years of my youth willingly fed to a snake.

Noticing my expression shift, Joren’s face fell. He walked quickly over to me, lowering his voice to a harsh whisper. "Aria, stop making a scene. I'll explain everything to you later."

Seeing my cold expression, he added, "Besides, you shouldn't have just shown up here behind my back."

I almost laughed. This was my house. Why the hell couldn't I come here?

Seeing my total lack of reaction, Joren’s patience completely snapped. He ripped off his fake nice-guy mask and threatened me openly.

"Aria," he gritted out. "Don't forget, I am a Don now! I'm not that lowly street punk you used to throw tantrums at. You better learn your damn place!"

"A Don?" I let out a cold, sharp laugh, my voice carrying across the silent room. I pointed right at his face. "Joren, since you’re such a big Don now, why don't you explain it to your men!"

"Tell them exactly who I’ve been to you for the last ten years!"

The room went dead silent. The laughing men and the gossiping neighbors all stopped and stared at their Don.

Joren froze in place, his eyes darting wildly. He couldn't even look me in the eye.

Just as he opened his mouth to spin another massive lie, Chloe lunged forward.

She shoved Joren behind her back, raised her hand high, and slapped me hard across the face.

Smack.

A stinging pain exploded across my left cheek.

"Who the hell do you think you are, talking to the Don like that?!" Chloe screeched.

I didn't even touch my face. I just stared with bloodshot eyes at the man hiding like a coward behind her, the man who just let it happen.

My eyes went completely cold. The very last illusion I held of him shattered into dust.

I clenched my jaw and raised my hand, fully ready to slap that toxic bitch into the floor.

Just then, a man in a sharp black suit strode into the room, his voice cutting through the tension with absolute, unwavering respect.

"Miss, allow me to handle this trash. You shouldn't dirty your hands."

I decided to open the door. Who knew what this psycho was going to try to do."Aria!" Joren looked up, his eyes shining with manic excitement. "I understood what you said last time! I wasn't good enough for you then, but things are entirely different now!"He held up a bloody contract and the ring."Look! I took the West Side docks! I proved myself! I'm worthy of you now. Marry me!" I looked at the army of armed thugs down on the street, then back at this delusional man, and just felt pity.I sighed. "Joren, stop lying to yourself. We ended a year ago. A word of advice, stop being so arrogant. Climbing up on a mountain of bodies is going to get you killed." His manic smile vanished instantly. His face twisted with rage."Why? I did all of this, what more do you want from me?!" he roared."Do you know why you cheated with Chloe?" I asked, not expecting a real answer. "Because I saw you at your lowest. Once you thought you were a big shot, looking at me just reminded you of how broke a

Joren’s eyes were bloodshot with pure, unhinged obsession."Aria! Are you gonna force me to die before you even look at me?!" he screamed like a madman in the rain, his voice dripping with chilling desperation. "If that's what it takes, I'll blow my brains out right now!" I sat comfortably in the back of the car, staring at the man I once loved. He looked like a monster completely consumed by greed and a deeply twisted ego.I watched him calmly. He was just pathetic."Joren, do you know why I hid my identity and chose to be with a broke punk like you?""Because back then, even though you had nothing, you were loyal. You had the guts to actually protect the people you loved."I didn't hold back as I shredded whatever dignity he had left. "But look at you now! You're a leech. You throw women under the bus when things get hard, and you beg like a stray dog in the mud!" The pouring rain crashed down around us. Joren froze, letting out a choked sob like a dying animal. His hand trembled v

He groaned loudly in pain, dropping to one knee in front of me, trying to use extreme guilt and our past to manipulate me one last time."Aria, it hurts..." he gasped, pale and heavily sweating. He looked up at me with pathetic, dog-like eyes. "It really hurts... I remember back then, you used to carefully bandage my wounds... I'd bleed out right here if it meant you'd forgive me." I stared blankly at the blood ruining the Persian rug.I felt absolutely nothing. My only thought was: He’s filthy. He’s ruining my floor."Joren, you think way too highly of yourself." I looked down at him. "Even if you plunged that knife directly into your heart and died right here, I wouldn't bat an eye. Take your woman and get out." Joren stared in utter shock, unable to believe the girl who used to cry over his minor scrapes was acting so ruthless."Aria! I swear it's only you!" He panicked completely when the guilt trip didn't work. "It was Chloe! She aggressively seduced me! I messed up, but I never

Under the immediate threat of death and his fragile empire crumbling, Joren threw away whatever pride he had left.He shoved Chloe away and dropped to his knees like a stray dog, frantically grabbing the hem of my dress."Aria, let me explain!" he begged, pure panic in his eyes. "Me and Chloe aren't what you think! She’s just a toy! That island party, she made it all up to show off! I never agreed to it!"He swore to the heavens. "My heart never changed! You're the only one I truly love!" Looking at his face, my stomach churned. The disgust hit its absolute peak.I violently yanked my dress away like he was a walking disease. I pulled a silk handkerchief from my bag, meticulously wiped the fingers he touched, and dropped the cloth on the floor."A toy?" I looked down at him, my eyes totally dead. "If she's just a toy, why was she lounging in my house like she owned it? Why was she bragging to everyone that this multi-million-dollar estate was your promise ring to her?" Joren froze, h

I recognized him immediately. It was Matteo, my father’s fiercely loyal Underboss. The second Matteo spoke.Smack.A slap ten times harder than the one I took cracked across Chloe’s face. The brutal force literally lifted her off her feet, and she slammed hard onto the unforgiving marble floor. Blood and broken teeth spilled from her mouth. The sudden, extreme violence shocked everyone in the room.Joren turned ghostly pale. He rushed forward and scooped Chloe up."Chloe! Are you okay?" he roared in anger. Compared to how he stood completely still when I got hit, his panic now was the ultimate, bitter irony. I saw it all clearly, and my smile was ice-cold."Motherfucker! You hit our future Don's wife! Kill him!"Joren's thugs pulled their guns, aiming straight at Matteo and me. Looking at this sad gang of nobodies acting so arrogant, I just felt it was ridiculous. Frogs at the bottom of the well who had absolutely no idea they were looking at the sky.Matteo didn't even blink. He ju
