ELOWEN

I swallowed hard, looking up at him. “What!?” I was breathless.

His gaze locked in mine, “what do you want to ask?”

I licked my lips. Almost denying, but then, I took the chance, mastering the courage and asked— "Umm, Liora— I was thinking of how close you are with her.”

And once the question slipped I knew I might have asked it wrongly, because his gaze has now turned quite curious.

“I mean, I had seen her a while ago— going out of your office.” I added hurriedly, of course lying. I didn’t see her, instead I heard her.

“Then I thought of the way she calls you, which indicates your strong— bond. So, I was just curious… After all, I know nothing about you.” The last part wasn't a lie, I truly know nothing about him except what he had given me.

He watched me for a while, eyes scanning me and for a moment, I felt perhaps I asked too much and I shouldn't have done that. I should apologise.

But then—

“We were friends from college.” He said, gaining my eyes

ALEXANDER The moment we stepped out of the marriage registry office, the sunlight hit us with a sharpness that felt almost mocking. Too bright, too celebratory for something that felt more like a noose tightening around both of our throats.Elowen didn’t look at me. Not once. She held the documents in her delicate grip, her eyes fixed somewhere ahead —far enough away that I couldn’t reach her.She was too calm. The kind of calm that was the reason for my suffocation. And— I couldn’t take it anymore…“Nervous?” I asked. She didn’t look at me, “never.” She replied tightly. Liar. I didn’t say anything, only chuckled lightly, “good.”"You shouldn’t be, because we are officially married now." I said, more to myself. “Welcome to the first day of the next 36 months of our lives.” I whispered. She didn’t say anything, but continued with her silence. I opened the door of the car for her. She got in without meeting my gaze. The engine purred to life, and the hum was the only sound betwee

ELOWENI closed the door behind me and leaned against it, letting the silence take me over. My fingers trembled as I slid down the floor, pulling my knees to my chest. Everything felt heavier here, heavier than the air outside, heavier than the chaos that had swallowed my life whole these past twenty-four hours. The contract sat on the bedside table, staring at me like a silent judge. The meticulously inscribed letters, the prominently featured clauses, and the dispassionate, clinical phrasing— they all screamed of surrender, of giving up, of bending to a world that had never really wanted my consent. And yet… I couldn’t deny it. I had no other choice. The media, my family, the looming shadow of a brother I barely knew— above all, this contract, now seemed to be my shield. Only shield actually. My escape. And… maybe even the only way to survive.I pulled the document closer and read it again. Every word felt heavier this time, but clearer. Every clause, every obligation, every leg

ALEXANDER The moment I stepped into my room, I didn’t turn on the lights. The darkness was easier to breathe in. The city glowed beyond the glass wall, neon and dusk bleeding into each other like an open wound, and for a second I just stood there. My jaw clenched tight, my hands braced on the window frame— trying to calm the storm I had deliberately unleashed.I knew what I had done downstairs had shaken her. Shock was too mild a word; I had detonated a bomb in her lap and then watched her sit there with trembling hands, trying to understand why the man she thought she knew had suddenly demanded marriage.A contract marriage, no less.I dragged a hand over my face. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this,” I muttered to the glass, watching my own reflection glare back— controlled, but barely.Except… that wasn’t entirely true, was it?This contract had once been the centerpiece of a plan— my revenge plan. A beautifully constructed trap meant to bind a Corvella to me legally, socially, a

ELOWEN “What?!” A gasp tore through me, loud enough for Alexander to hear in the other room for certain. My heart stopped. Actually stopped. The world tilted so sharply I had to grip the counter not to collapse.“What the hell Mom?” I almost barked, barely able to contain my tone. “She— she’s been talking to her friend. Remember, aunt Rose? Her grandson, Jordan.” Mom explained. “He just returned from abroad. Successful. Well-mannered. Comes from a good family. Your grandmother thinks it’s time to ‘secure your future’ before you— you take any further wrong step”“Mom,” I choked. “I am twenty-five. I am not a child.” “I know, but you know them.” Mom whispered back, like she was afraid the walls would hear.I sank onto a stool. My legs wouldn’t hold me.“But why? She didn’t even ask for my consent once.”“She doesn’t think she needs to. You know how she is. She thinks you’re… drifting. And when she saw that article— about you and Adrian— she said she ‘won’t tolerate any second scand

ELOWEN The apartment was too quiet. Not peaceful, instead, it was heavy, uncomfortable, that made one restless. The kind where even the sound of the refrigerator felt like a reminder that something wasn’t right…I dropped myself on the couch, wincing as my shoulder ached. The hospital’s antiseptic smell still clung to my clothes, or maybe it was my imagination— either way, it wasn’t leaving anytime soon.I exhaled long and slow, leaning on the marble edge. “Just a normal day,” I muttered under my breath, though no part of the last twenty-four hours had been normal.Alexander had been in that hospital bed overnight, and the closeness with him was enough to make my lungs twist tight even now.I had insisted on staying though. Refused to leave his side even when the doctors said he would be fine. Guilt did that— heavy, thorned, and impossible to ignore. And perhaps, my growing feelings for him…I rubbed my temples. It didn’t matter that he had stayed because I asked the doctors to keep

ELOWEN I didn’t want to answer and wanted to ignore. I wanted to throw the phone out the window. I wanted to crawl under the tight warmth of Alexander’s presence and disappear for a few hours. But I answered anyway. I have ignored him too much. “Finally,” Cassian’s voice came through, calm as static, cold as winter. “What happened?”“I’m fine,” I forced out.“That wasn’t my question.” He said, his voice as usual, calm and cold. My throat tightened. “Cassian—”“Mom told me everything.” His tone sharpened. “I’ll be there in a week.”My pulse stumbled. “I- I thought you'll be here after a week?”“Yes, I did. Now, I'll arrive a week before.” He said, “why? Are you not pleased with my arrival?” I blinked. “Cassian, I don't have any problems. I was just saying, you don’t have to—”“I’m not asking, Pie.” He said, shutting me up, and even though he had used the endearment he always uses, it was cold. Then colder: “And until then? Don’t do anything stupid, Elowen. Do you hear me?”A famil
