Chapter 2

Author: Blanc Ball
Every time Silas fainted when we were kids, my parents scolded me. They said it was my fault for stealing the nutrients that should've gone to him in the womb, and that was why he was born so sickly.

They said it so many times that eventually I believed it too.

I really thought it was all my fault. So I grew up drowning in guilt and bent over backward to be good to Silas. Anything he wanted, I saved up to buy for him. Every time he got into trouble, I quietly took the fall.

In middle school, Silas stole money from the school bully. After class, the bully showed up with a whole gang to corner us. The second Silas realized things were going south, he pointed at me and shouted, "My brother took the money! It had nothing to do with me!"

Then a dozen guys jumped me. The bully had them pin me down and brought a metal pipe down on my arm, snapping the bone.

Even then, I gritted my teeth and never told anyone the truth.

In tenth grade, Silas hid in the girls' restroom and secretly filmed our female classmates on his phone. When it all came out, he was afraid of being punished, so he pinned it on me too.

I got a formal disciplinary mark on my record and was publicly reprimanded in front of the whole school. The humiliation was the least of it.

For the rest of high school, every girl except Corinne treated me like a pervert and spat at me whenever they saw me.

The guys despised me too. They called me the scum of the earth, and every few days they'd corner me in the bathroom and rough me up...

But I still didn't say a word. I clenched my jaw and took the blame for Silas.

Because Silas had said, "Emmett, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I've been sick my whole life, and no girl has ever liked me. I was just too curious. That's why I went into the girls' restroom and filmed them. I didn't mean any harm.

"Why does it have to be me who's sick? If I weren't sick, I could date and fall in love like a normal person..."

Every word out of his mouth was like a sharp knife driven deep into my heart.

The more he talked like that, the guiltier I felt. I thought it was because of me that he was in so much pain.

So my whole life, no matter how unforgivable his mistakes were, I was willing to take the blame.

But it turned out he'd never been sick at all!

Inside the bedroom, Silas pressed Corinne down beneath him and laughed suggestively. "Come on, Mrs. Carlisle. Wedding nights don't last forever. Let's not waste a second."

Corinne didn't push him away. The sounds of the two of them spilled out through the crack in the door, and by then, tears were streaming down my face.

I didn't sleep at all that night. Early the next morning, Mom came to wake me.

"Silas wore himself out last night. His health is delicate—he can't take that kind of strain. Hurry up and go make him some bone broth so he can get his strength back."

How ridiculous. Silas had slept with my wife, and I was supposed to get up early and make him broth so he could recover?

In that moment, I really wanted to ask her: Did she even think of me as her son?

If she did, how could she be this biased? I'd always been the most devoted son. Why had she and Dad never once seen me?

I gave her a long look but said nothing. I just turned and went to the kitchen.

Once I was there, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number. "Hello, is this Silver Pines Senior Living? I'd like to sell the private residence I bought for my parents last month."

Corinne was the only child of a family with old money and serious power. Money was the one thing they'd never run short of. So before the wedding, I'd spent every penny of my savings on my parents.

I'd bought them a private residence at the most expensive senior-living community in Crestholm, then set aside the rest to catch up on their retirement contributions and buy them top-tier health insurance, so they could spend their golden years happy and healthy.

But now I was done being the sucker. If they loved Silas that much, Silas could take care of them in their old age!

"Sell it within a week, and I'll give you an extra ten percent on your commission," I said flatly, then hung up.

The moment I ended the call, Corinne appeared in the kitchen doorway, as sexy and alluring as ever. "Emmett, what's this tantrum about now? We just got married, and you already want to sell our home?"

When she saw the screenshots on my phone, Corinne turned white as a sheet. She stammered, "I... I... Emmett, don't be angry. I wasn't trying to hide it from you. I just forgot about it."Don't worry. I'll have my people take all these stories down right away. I'll clear your name."But I couldn't be bothered with her anymore. I called the police again. After that, Corinne actually left me alone for a while. I thought she'd finally given up on me. But later, Freya told me that Corinne hadn't given up at all. She'd gone back home to clean up after Silas.Because Silas had gotten himself into trouble again.Back when Corinne and I got engaged, I'd spent my life savings on a private residence for my parents at Silver Pines Senior Living, for them to retire in. But later, once I found out my parents had been lying to me all along and using me as Silas's scapegoat, I sold it.My parents didn't know I'd sold it, though. After I left the country, they happily showed up at Silver Pines,

After I'd rejected her again and again, Corinne finally broke down. She sobbed, "Emmett, how can you be so heartless? We've been together for over ten years. Can you really bring yourself to throw me away?"But I couldn't be bothered to keep going around in circles with this shameless woman. I called the police. The police took Corinne away, and my apartment was finally quiet again.I got out the first-aid kit, sat down, and carefully started treating Freya's injuries. In the fight, Corinne's nails had left two scratches on Freya's beautiful face."I'm really sorry for dragging you into this," I said, feeling terrible. But Freya smiled. Suddenly, she reached out and caught the hand holding the cotton swab. "Emmett, your problems are my problems."So don't ever be this polite with me again. It'll hurt my feelings."She paused, then added softly, "Emmett, the truth is, the way I feel about you hasn't changed since high school..."I was stunned. I'd always thought Freya only conf

Now that I'd called her out to her face, Corinne finally went quiet. She stared at me, pale as a ghost. Her mouth opened and closed as if she wanted to say something, but the evidence was undeniable, and she had nothing left to argue. For a long time, she couldn't get a word out."Corinne, I must've been blind to ever love you," I said coldly. "But my eyes are open now. I don't want to waste any more time on someone as revolting as you. Get out of my apartment right now, or I'm calling the police!""Emmett, don't do this," Corinne choked out. "We've been together for so many years. You know how much I love you!"But you're so straitlaced that sometimes I find you a little boring. And your brother is so wild and reckless. He looks just like you, but his personality is the complete opposite. So I lost my head for a moment and got a little interested in him."But it was only a passing thing. It wasn't love. The one I really love is you! You're the one I want to spend the rest of my li

I froze. I didn't even need to step into the living room to guess what was happening.Corinne was here.Honestly, when I left, it never once occurred to me that she'd come looking for me.Because whenever we fought, I was always the one who caved first. She'd never backed down for me, not once, while I'd apologized to her over and over, with no dignity left at all...That was why I hadn't bothered covering my tracks when I left.I'd assumed someone as proud as Corinne would never come all this way herself to beg me to take her back. But she'd found me. Not only had she found me, she was in the living room locked in a full-on brawl with Freya. They were yanking each other's hair, each one more vicious than the other."Freya, you homewrecker! Seducing someone else's husband—you have no shame!" Corinne screamed. "I knew it! Emmett would never just walk out on me on his own. It was you, you bitch, coming between us!""You're the one with no shame, Corinne!" Freya shot back, refusin

After she said that, Freya hugged me.And after that, we didn't see each other again for years. Two years later, I got into Westbridge University's math program, but my parents forced me to give my spot to Silas.Silas partied his way through four years at Westbridge, failed every single class, and got expelled. My degree was ruined for good. That same year—the year Westbridge expelled Silas under my name—Freya suddenly sent me an email. She said she was studying math at Ravenmoor now, and her adviser was the most renowned mathematician in the country. The week before, because of her outstanding grades, she'd been invited to join the research group he led, an exception to the usual rules. The group met regularly to tackle some of the hardest problems in the world.Reading her email, My feelings were all over the place. I couldn't help thinking: If I'd stood my ground back then and refused to let Silas go to Westbridge in my place, would my life have turned out differently?Co

  • I Married Her to My Twin   Chapter 12

Two weeks earlier, I'd landed in Kingsreach.Home of Ravenmoor University. When I got off the plane, I was surprised to find my old high school classmate, Freya Montrose, waiting at the arrivals exit with a sign that had my name on it.Truth be told, the only reason I'd gotten a second shot at college at Ravenmoor was Freya's recommendation.Freya was the eldest daughter of the Montrose family. When it came to family background or looks, she was every bit Corinne's equal. Maybe that was exactly the problem—the town just wasn't big enough for the two of them. Freya and Corinne had never gotten along, not since they were kids. They couldn't stand each other and were always quietly trying to one-up each other. They were sworn rivals, basically.Freya was a top student too. From elementary through middle school, her grades were always a notch above Corinne's. But once they got to high school, her grades gradually slipped behind.Because Corinne had started dating me, the smartest k
