Chapter five

I felt my heart in my mouth. Still trying to process what he just muttered.

‘Xavier!’ I called out, waving my hand in front of him. I aimed at trying to bring him back to reality from whatever dream world he was in.

I saw his eyes shift as if he just became aware of his surroundings. Xavier looked round. It wasn’t even funny, if things were not serious, I would have laughed at him. But right now? The humor wasn’t even there.

‘Are you alright?’

On hearing those words, his gaze landed back on me. He parted his lips ‘Did I scare you?’.

‘Are you joking…Xav..ier…I…I…’

Before I knew it, tears welled up in my eyelid, then slowly it slid down my cheeks.

‘Shit!’ I heard him say.

He held my chin ‘Shush. It was just a joke?’

‘Just a joke? Are you for real?’ I yanked his hand off my chin.

Silence followed. Only the sound of heartbeat could be heard.

‘Are you having bad nightmares?’

He tilted his head ‘Of course not’

‘But you were unwell few minutes ago’ I raised my hand to touch his forehead. I didn’t even reach him, when his hands stopped me mid-way.

‘I.said.I.am.fine’

Those words came out more like a stand and not a statement. Those words cut through me.

‘You just shouted at me, Xavier’ I apprehended him.

‘Shit’ he cursed again.

‘Shit? Is that your favorite phrase now? Xavier, what’s wrong with you?’

He stretched his neck ‘Come here’ He beckoned on me, stretching his hands forward ‘I am just tired, and I need rest’.

I crept into his arms ‘You smell differently’

‘Hmmmm’

I looked up to meet his eyes.

‘Yeah’ he shrugged ‘I changed my cologne’

‘But Crystal was your favorite. Why change all of a sudden?’

‘Renee, you talk too much’

I tapped his arms playfully ‘But you said you love me that way. Forgotten?’

‘Okay, go to sleep now’

The weather was a cold one, but being in Xavier’s arm made me warm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Next day came just fast. It was finally what I needed- A reset.
Xavier would return back to his normal self. I mean, the original version of himself.
I stared at the ceiling, and the shadow of the chandelier was casted on my face. A smile dragged across my face. I looked beside me, the spot was empty and void.
Xavier wasn’t there. Without caring much about how I looked I slipped my legs into the oversized flip flops. Remembering Xavier’s words yesterday about how the oversized flops still looked good on me, made me shimmer.
I rushed out of the room, ran down the stairs. Getting to the dining area of this huge mansion, I saw the maids, the same ones from yesterday that were putting on blue uniform.
Xavier was also seated right there clad in blue pant trouser and red turtleneck top
They were serving him potato porridge. I should be the one serving my husband. I am the wife not them.
‘Excuse me,’ I beckoned to the maid doing the serving. I was still away from the dinning.
I looked at Xavier’s plate; luckily, nothing was on it. The china ware glittered very clean.
I hastened my footsteps ‘Good morning husband’ I said quickly, collecting the cutleries from the maid.
I saw the look Xavier gave me. His eyes watched my every move, as if trying to take all of me in and learn something about the kind of girl I was.
‘That’s it’ I pulled myself away from the yet again intrusive though ‘He knew me in and out. So yeah’
‘You can go. I will handle it from here,’ I whispered into the ears of the maid.
I scooped one spoon from the stainless pot unto the china ware plate in front of Xavier. Then I realized that Xavier didn’t answer my greeting.
I paused for a while still trying to recall the moments from when I sent the maid away to right now.
‘Xavier’
‘Hmmmm’
‘You didn’t give me a reply I greeted you’
‘I did’ He spat. He crossed his hands and looked at me keenly. The expression in his eyes softened.
‘No, you didn’t-’
‘Wifey, I did’ His gaze was still fixed on me.
I only nodded and continued to serve his plate.
‘That’s enough now’ His voice came.
‘Sure’ I replied stepping back.
‘I haven’t had my bath, so I would just go up to freshen-‘
‘Feed me’
I wasn’t expecting that. His hands stretched forward and pulled me closer to him. In fact, my butts landed on his laps.
At least, this close contact felt refreshing than yesterday’s weird behavior.
‘Ahh’ I gestured for him to open his mouth. I already scooped some potato porridge.
He opened his mouth just like an obedient lad. He ate quietly. After eight spoonful or less I stood up without him telling him.
‘You will be late to work’
He stood up just as the same time with me. His figure towered over me in that spot.
He held my waist firmly and drew me closer to him. My breath hitched. He bit his inner gum
Then the words left his mouth.
‘Kiss me’
    His lips descended on mine, and I was carried away in the moment. My heart thumped so fast in my rib cage. His soft lips? I fucking love that.I wrapped my arms around his neck not wanting to let go.‘So, it was just really stress yesterday?’ I mumbled inaudibly.I glanced at the big wall clock that hung at the dining section. I was already late to workI loosened my arms around his shoulders ‘I need to go freshen up now or else I would be late to work’‘Alright wifey’I could hear the maids stifle a laugh, but I ignored them totally. They aren’t worth it anyway.‘New nickname? I love it’ I poked his nose, turning on the back of my heels and rushed up the stairs. I needed to leave before 9am.I had the driver from last night drop me off at work. I noticed how he stared at me through the rear-view mirror. Probably, to see if I was okay. Last night I sounded like a totally pissed off bride to his ears.Did I? Yes, I did. I am very sure and of course I was more than pissed off.‘Mr. Xav
    I didn’t sleep, I just couldn’t. Taking that nap without seeing Xavier? That wasn’t going to happen. The room was dark. I had turned off the lights. My hand went to the lamp on the night stand. I pressed the on button and light came.I saw it. He shifted back.‘Was he surprised to see me still awake?’ I stood up still on my wedding dress and held the long part up.I saw as he proceeded to turn on the lights of the room. I blinked because of the light. There he stood. He bit his lips.‘Xavier. Where did you go?’ I started, still holding up my cloth‘Why are you still dressed in this?’ He just did what I hated. First, his response, as if the name ‘Xavier’ didn’t belong to him. And then, second, he evaded my questions.‘I believe you should answer my question first, before asking me another. A question should always end with an answer, and not another question’ I shot at him. My voice came out sharp, my heart began to do its’ tantrums like I shouldn’t be the one controlling it.Minutes
Each step felt like it was calculated.‘Good afternoon Ma’am’ They greeted, but I shifted back.I exhaled. It came with a sharp pain as if hitting my brain cells. ‘Like seriously?’ I laughed, but the laughter was short-lived.I couldn’t believe my eyes. ‘Come on, d
    Everybody had left. It remained just me and him-Xavier alone in the wedding hall. Our wedding would make history, because this is the first wedding I knew of, where the bride and groom were the last to leave the hall.As a little child, I remember attending a wedding with my mum. The bride and groom left the whole guests behind. They drove away in the car they had come with. It’s now over thirty minutes, since Xavier had been on the phone. Only God knows who he was talking to for that long. His back was turned to my face. My naughty brain began to fantasize how my first night with him would be and feel like. Stealthily, I walked over to his back trying to eavesdrop. It was just me being curious.My face fell. It wasn’t long he hung the call. Immediately, Xavier turned. I tried to force a smile through my face. I wondered how it looked to Xavier.‘Trying to eavesdrop uhn’ He held my cheek and shook it slowly.My cheeks blushed red on their own, without me forcing it to. But wait his
    Something about Xavier felt different tonight. He no longer smiled the way he usually does, when he sees me.The affectionate glares, the touch and the mesmerizing look he usually gave me were all missing. I don’t know why I seem to feel this way or maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am overthinking things.Today was supposed to be our happy day. By the look of things his gestures says otherwise, like he wanted to get things over with as soon as possible.‘Xavier, is everything alright?’ I asked him. He had just stepped into my dressing room.The makeup artiste was still doing her job in making me look aesthetically pleasing.He only gave a slight nod to my question.I was still dressed in my bridal robe.Then his voice came ‘Won’t you get changed? The priest is already here. We can’t keep everyone waiting’ He smiled, but it wasn’t the kind of smile that reached his face.‘Soon’ I replied him. He walked away without saying anything further.‘Please, can you hasten up? I need to join him at the
