The news knocks the breath out of me like a bucket of ice water.

I'm sitting in my living room, scrolling through my phone when I see the headline flash across the screen.

**ROGUE ATTACK ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN ARKON: SEVERAL DEAD, MANY INJURED, HOME DESTROYED BY BOMBING.**

My thumb freezes mid-scroll.

I tap on the article, my heart pounding as I skim through the details.

A coordinated rogue attack. Multiple casualties among the security team. The house burned to the ground.

And then I see the name buried in the second paragraph.

*Megan Pierce.*

A jolt shoots through me.

What?

I read it again, slower this time, making sure I'm not misunderstanding.

But no. It's right there.

Megan Pierce and her two gremlins were attacked in their home early this morning. All three survived with minor injuries and are currently being treated at Arkon General Hospital.

‘Survived.’

The word rings in my head like poison.

They survived.
