The best defense is always a good offense. That what what I learnt from the lectures of criminal law, and I was putting it into practice, completely taking the plaintiff unawares.

“ Defendant. Is your question to the young man really relevant to this case?” The judge asked.

“ Yes, your honour, it is very much relevant to this case and we are about to find out”, I said, turning to the judge and turning back to the young man.

“ Mr Peter Crown, I ask again. Where were you, and what were you doing between the hours of 11: 00 am to 1:00 pm on the 14th of May?”

He still kept quiet as tension grew inside the court room. Even though it was airy and the weather was cool, I saw lines of sweat falling off his face and falling on his shirt.

“ Your honour, Mr Peter Crown is terrified as it stands and the defendant is clearly in contempt, and isn't really bothered about the mental health of the young man before him”, Mr Crown’s lawyer said.

“ Defendant, you may state your case”, the judge, a homey looking woman who seemed to be in her fifties, said. “ Thank you your honour”, I said, standing up to my feet and stepping out of my desk to face the whole court. The plaintiff had stated their own case, still dwelling on the fact that my client was guilty, and as anticipated, presented the video tape showing how and when he took the stolen item. “ Your honour”, I began, “ even though the plaintiff has presented a vivid piece of evidence to support the claim that my client, Mr John Doe, committed the crime of robbery, I still stand here to avert that claim”, I heard people gasp, “ my client is innocent of any accusations labelled against him so far”. The court wasn't filled with people, just a few, but the voices of that few rose to the ceiling as they murmured. The plaintiff's lawyer too was murmuring with Mr Crown, and I could've bet my ass that they were considering the fact that I was mentally deranged or someth

I used to abhor Korean movies so much. Together with Indian movies. There was just too much drama, and the drama was always tacky and cringe. I mean, how possible is it that you're about to fall, and then out of nowhere, this handsome prince charming comes along and saves you, and you guys spend eternity staring into each other's eyes and breathing each other's breathe? I could never believe that such situation was possible. Also with the fact that their hair always floated in the air, together with the fact that they always fell in slow motion. Like, who the hell falls down in slow motion and dares to go against the laws of gravity and acceleration? But not until that incident, not until Basil turned into a prince charming, a knight in shining armor, and saved me from the impending catastrophe. It was so unreal, so tacky, so cringe. We stared into each other's eyes, lost in infinity, in a timeless timeline. The wind didn't even help matters. A soft breeze began to blow,

During my first week in Boston, I remember going to the students courtroom just to look around. It was nothing like an actual courtroom, and there was a students trial going on, with the president of the Law Students Association presiding over the case. Everything was enchanting, and it all caught my attention, but not as much as the statue of The Lady Justice, an allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial system. I fell in love with her attributes; the scale, the sword, and the blindfold, plus the fact that she often appears in pair with Prudentia. We never talked about the statue as a topic in class, but it was once mentioned during a lecture on Ancient Roman History And It's Escapades, that the statue originated from the personification of justice in Ancient Roman Art known as Lustitia or Justitia, who is equivalent to the Greek goddess, Themis. The origin of Lady Justice was Justitia (or Iustitia), the goddess of Justice within Roman mythology. Justitia was i

I stopped at the law firm to gather some files that I didn’t even think that I'll use before heading to the police station. The streets were pretty scanty, showing that it was still early in the morning. School buses were not buzzing their way around town transporting children, neither were people hurrying off to their place of work to avoid being late or anything. Even the firm was kind of empty when I got there but it was no surprise that Mr Churchill was already there, typing away on his computer and occasionally scribbling on his notebook, looking pretty unkept in his rumpled shirt and pants, with shoes that had clearly seen better days. And he was the only one there apart from the receptionist and the security man. I stopped at a McDonalds store to grab a hamburger and a cup of coffee before heading to the police station, and even as I chewed on the savory burger, the fearful knot in my tummy did not subside. I knew I was going to meet him, and I dreaded that. Surprising

“ You know that guy that I told you I was with on the night that I was supposed to take you bowling?” I said to Sasha as I settled on the couch, munching on some super tasty potato chips. “ Yeah”, she replied, taking her gaze away from the television. “ Okay, so, I didn't tell you this, but I met with him the following day”. “ After the first day?” “ Yeah”. “ That's surprising. I thought you didn't hook up with people more than once?” She asked. “ Yeah, but there was no one else, and I didn't want to go to some bar with the intention of looking for who to fuck me, he was the only one available”. “ Well I'm pretty sure that hundreds of men out there in gay clubs would want to fuck you”, she said, raising her eyebrows. “ Yes, you're right, but I didn't make reservations or get a ticket, and you obviously wouldn't expect me to go to these roadside club with dirty, smelling guys”, I retorted, backing up my actions with reasons. “ Okay, so what happened?” “ The thing

It was stupid of me to ask. He was wearing a uniform, one that made his outline more firm and rigid, the kind of sight that always made me think about what might be behind those clothes. He was definitely bulky, and thinking about it now, I loved how his whole body almost suffocated me the couple of times he was on top of me. “ A detective? Woah, that's uh……….. that's cool”, I said, scratching the back of my head. “ You know him from somewhere?” The other cop that was standing with him asked, probably seeing how agitated I was. His creepy eyes were like a natural scanner, one that was able to read even the smallest details in a room. “ Yeah, yeah”, Basil responded, looking at him and looking back at me as he said, “ we had quite a special encounter”. I would've rolled my eyes if he had said that over a phone. Yes we had a special encounter, but did he have to tell everyone? Okay, he didn't tell everyone, but he said it in front of Mr Creepy, and I could've bet my little a

“ Really? You're going to the criminal case department?” Galinda asked after I told her. “ Yeah”, I nodded, kind of feeling nervous. “ But why?” “ I just think that I should do it, you know?” “ That's so bad. Hakim will be so downcast. He was so expectant about you coming. It was super clear that he was happy that someone was going to train under him, and that that person was you”, she sighed. “ What? He was what? Expectant?” I was surprised. “ Of course. He even talked about how you were so smart and all, and how you will even do better than he is doing in court if you ever master the caprices of court”, she said, not even batting an eye. If it was a lie, then she must've stood in her mirror and practiced the lie several times before it would be able to fly out of her mouth the way it did. “ Wow. I'm surprised”, I said, feeling the temperature on my cheeks rising. “ Well, let's look at the positive side, it's not so bad, and you'll be returning in two months, so it
