Chapter 1

"Justin, I really wish you'd never been saved when you were nine. You should've just been left to die."

The moment Simone Scott said that, the private room exploded with noise.

"Holy shit! Sim, that's brutal!"

"Next time, when Justin's hearing is fully fixed, you should lean right into his ear and say it again. I'm dying to see if he'll cry when he hears it. Bet he'd look all meek and pitiful, like some goody-two-shoes pretending to be innocent."

"Why would it matter if he heard it? Who would want a cripple anyway? Sim's the only one charitable enough to keep him around."

I froze where I stood.

My fingers clamp tight around the hearing recovery report stuffed in my bag, my mind completely blank.

After the college entrance exams ended, my parents took me out of town to see specialists. My hearing was cured, and I no longer needed a hearing aid.

Today was my birthday.

I'd planned to surprise Simone.

I wanted to tell her my hearing was healed, that I wouldn't be her burden anymore. I never expected that the carefully planned surprise would lead me to overhear her cruel, cutting words.

Her words stabbed straight through my chest, twisting until my heart seized and I could barely breathe.

My nails press into my palm, pain shooting through me.

I bit my lower lip and looked at Simone, wanting to ask why, but she didn't even notice me.

She twirled the white hearing aid between her fingers with a mocking smile on her lips. "Alright, that's enough. At least Justin saved my life when we were kids. Watch what you say. Don't let it get back to him."

Everyone immediately got the hint.

"Got it. Our lips are sealed."

"Geez, Justin hitting it off with Simone? Being deaf his whole life would be worth it."

Another burst of laughter followed.

"Alright, alright. Justin's a good student, not like me. I can mess around with you guys, but don't take it too far."

Ralph Chesson walked over with a grin and announced, "Simone, you've passed my test. I believe you don't like Justin anymore. Let's go on a date tomorrow."

Simone's lips curved with a smile. Her eyes softened, tenderness spilling over as she whispered, "Okay."

I stood there in a daze, my mind completely blank. It felt like the world had stopped turning. The laughter and cheers melted into a sharp, piercing ringing.

"Hey, honey. What are you thinking about?"

Before I could respond, Simone had slipped my hearing aid back on, a small smile playing at her lips. "So happy you can't think straight, huh?"

It should have been a happy moment. My 18th birthday, a confession from the woman I liked, all witnessed by friends, just like something out of a teen romance show.

But now, when I opened my mouth, my throat was so dry I couldn't say a single word.

The others rushed to fill the silence.

"Justin, Sim just took off your hearing aid and whispered a bunch of sweet stuff. We all got chills listening."

"Damn, I wish I had a childhood sweetheart, too."

"Not bad," Ralph said, slinging an arm around Simone's shoulder and lightly punching her. "You've got to be the lucky one to end up with Justin."

I said nothing.

My gaze slowly swept across everyone in the room.

They smiled and congratulated me, gave me thumbs up, and even joked about waiting for the wedding.

Not a single one showed any slip of emotion. Their expressions were unnaturally calm.

I'd endured long enough. It was time to close the net. After I took over the company, I deliberately undercut Simone on several major deals in a row.Scott Group had never been able to rival Gale Group. After that scandal years ago, which haunted her through college before she dropped out, she was already at a major disadvantage. She lacked credibility and any real business experience.Every time she went to the partners to demand an explanation or tried to talk them into backing out of my deals, she failed."Justin, is this revenge? It's been over eight years. Shouldn't you be over it by now? Can we just talk?"While she was desperately trying to get a meeting with me, I personally submitted evidence of her tax evasion and money laundering from the past few years. As a result, she was arrested at the airport.I stood not far away and watched quietly as the police put her in cuffs. Her face twisted in pain, like she wanted to say something. I stepped closer and finally heard h

  • I Never Should've Saved You   Chapter 10

I looked Simone in the eye and said, "If I could go back, I'd never save you. I'd rather you'd been left there to burn. You were never worth my kindness."Simone stood there, stunned, unable to say a word.I shifted slightly to avoid her and went upstairs without looking back. The next day, Simone was gone.In the dorm, one of the guys who always woke up early to work out said, "She said she's heading back and won't bother you again."I nodded, thanked him, and went back to my own business. Not long after, I found out through a mutual friend's social media that Simone and Ralph had started dating. She kept sending messages, complaining about everything."Those two are glued at the hip every day, showing off their love nonstop. I'm sick of it.""I heard Simone got voted campus belle. Makes sense. She's beautiful and comes from a wealthy family. No wonder so many guys had a crush on her.""I heard Ralph is insanely jealous.""Oh right, Justin, how have you been lately?"It wa

At the time, Simone's attention was on comforting Ralph. She never noticed that I wasn't wearing my hearing aid at all that day.I heard from mutual friends that she had been asking around for me.That didn't surprise me in the slightest.Maybe she'd finally learned that my hearing had been fixed and belatedly realized that I'd already heard every cutting word she said that day in the private room. But none of that mattered anymore. My days in Juville were full and busy. Even though military training wore me out like crazy and left me sunburned in places, I'd never felt this free or light before.I joined several clubs and made a lot of new friends. I even went to a few mixers hosted by the upperclassmen and added some people to my contacts. When I saw that familiar figure standing downstairs outside the men's dorm, I was genuinely caught off guard. I planned to take a detour and leave. But Simone spotted me first and walked over, her steps quick. Her tone carried a hint of pl

Simone went on. "If you keep ignoring me, believe it or not, I'll take Ralph overseas for a trip."I ignored it and blocked her again. As the start of the semester drew closer, I got on a plane and flew straight to Juville.…Meanwhile, Simone had nervously showed up at my house and knocked on the door. She was holding two handmade knitted dolls, one blue and one pink, just the way she pictured us.Thinking about how surprised I would look when I saw them, she couldn't wait any longer. But when the door opened, I wasn't there. She asked instinctively, "Mr. and Mrs Gale, is Justin home? We haven't seen each other all summer. I brought him a gift."And college is about to start. I'm going with him."My mom's expression was calm, her tone flat. "Oh, we forgot to tell you, Sim. Justin has already gone to college. You won't be going with him."Simone paused for a moment, then decided I was probably just still upset. She turned to leave, but my dad stopped her, giving her a quick wa

At that, my parents smiled right away. "He went out of town for treatment, and his hearing's fully recovered now."Amelia was overjoyed, but she still wasn't ready to give up. "Justin, why don't you wait until Sim gets back before deciding? She has a right to know, too."When you were little, you followed her around every day. You even saved her life. How could those feelings just disappear?"I lowered my gaze to the coffee table, watching the tea ripple faintly in the cup."Mrs. Scott, neither of us loves the other anymore. There's no point dragging this out and hurting each other."Lucas let out a long sigh. He clearly understood our family's stance. He stopped Amelia from continuing and instructed the housekeeper to bring out the old engagement papers from years ago.Watching both copies get torn up, burned, and reduced to ashes, I finally felt like I could breathe again.I made one last request. "Amelia, Lucas, please don't tell anyone about this yet. Let's deal with it slow

Simone spoke. "What did you just say?"She stared at me in disbelief, and her face went pale. "When did that happen? Why didn't you tell me?"I smiled, my eyes cold and distant."Does it even matter? You've been doing all those things, assuming I couldn't hear. You know damn well what's going on."Simone clenched her fists, frozen where she stood and completely speechless.Ralph's expression flickered, jealousy flashing across his face. He said bluntly, accusing me, "Wow, Justin, I didn't realize you were such a good actor. Everyone knows your hearing loss is permanent. It's not something that just magically fixes itself. After that, he exaggeratedly widened his eyes, pretending to be shocked. "You don't seriously think that just because you're not disabled anymore, Sim's going to suddenly fall for you and treat you like some prince, do you?"He clicked his tongue. "I didn't think you'd stoop this low, Justin. Sim, you shouldn't fall for this."Simone's eyes lit up instantly. T
