Chapter 1

“There’s no need to send a rescue boat to the first floor of Building Three. Concentrate our resources on Building Five.”

Gavin Cooper’s calm voice came through the rescue team’s radio.

I floated above the floodwaters, holding my son’s hand as I listened in silence.

“But Mr. Cooper, your wife called earlier and said the water had already risen to her neck.”

The young rescue worker sounded anxious.

“You just joined the team, Jack. You don’t know Luna well. She tends to exaggerate.”

Gavin sighed helplessly.

“She knows I’m on the front lines, so she deliberately made things sound worse. She wants me to make an exception and rescue her first.

“I’m in charge of emergency response. If I give my own family special treatment, how can I expect anyone else to respect the rules?”

Jack fell silent for a moment.

“But your wife said Teddy has a high fever…”

“I know Teddy’s health. He’ll be fine after taking some medicine and getting some sleep,” Gavin interrupted.

“Wendy Harper is raising her daughter alone in Building Five, and her daughter has asthma. She can’t afford any unnecessary distress.

“Take the rescue boat to Building Five immediately. That’s an order.”

The radio went dead.

Jack sighed and had no choice but to turn the boat toward Building Five.

The boat’s propeller churned up the water as it passed over the bodies of my son and me.

Our bodies were trapped between the living room sofa and the ceiling.

Teddy’s favorite superhero toy floated on the water beside the half-eaten bowl of spaghetti I hadn’t had time to finish.

“Mom, why wouldn’t Dad let the police come save us?”

Teddy looked up at me, confusion written across his pale little face.

I crouched down and stroked his insubstantial hair.

“Because Dad had someone more important to save.”

“But I’m freezing, and it’s so dark in the water.” His lips trembled as he pouted.

I couldn’t bear to see him like that, so I immediately summoned the system.

“System, open the passage to another world.”

The system’s mechanical voice rang out.

“Host, the passage is ready. You may leave at any time.”

But Teddy suddenly grabbed the hem of my clothes.

“Mom, I want to see Dad one more time. I want to ask him if he stopped loving me because I was a bad boy.”

The faint hope in my son’s eyes made my chest ache.

Even in death, he was still thinking about the father who was always preaching about the greater good.

“System, delay our departure by two days.”

“Understood, host. Permission to remain has been granted. The countdown is forty-eight hours.”

I held Teddy’s hand as we drifted with the current toward the temporary shelter.

The shelter had been set up inside the city sports arena, which was brightly lit.

Gavin stood in front of the command station in his raincoat, checking the evacuation list.

Wendy sat beside him, wrapped in a blanket as she held her daughter in her arms.

“Gavin, am I causing you trouble? If you hadn’t come to save my daughter and me, wouldn’t you be with Luna right now?”

Gavin set down his pen and turned to look at her.

“Don’t let your imagination run wild. You and your daughter are a priority case. Saving you was part of my job.

“Luna is an adult, and Teddy is six years old. Even if they were trapped on the first floor, they could have climbed onto a cabinet and saved themselves.”

He picked up a cup of hot water from the table and handed it to Wendy.

“Drink this. I don’t want you catching a chill.”

I watched the scene in silence.

That was the blanket I had washed and put away in the closet two days earlier.

Before Gavin left, I had packed it in a waterproof bag and asked him to take it with him, worried that he would get cold while working overnight on the front lines.

Now it was wrapped around Wendy.

“But wasn’t Teddy running a fever?”

Wendy accepted the cup with both hands and asked cautiously.

“It was only a fever. It wasn’t going to kill him.”

Gavin’s voice remained indifferent.

“Luna is just too pampered. She thinks the whole world has to revolve around her.”

“I’ll have a word with her once the floodwaters go down.”

Teddy suddenly tightened his grip on my hand.

“Mom, did Dad stop caring about me because he doesn’t love me?”

The white light grew brighter, gradually enveloping Teddy and me.Gavin seemed to sense something and suddenly looked up toward the glow. His eyes were bloodshot from going without sleep for so long.“Luna? Teddy?”He reached out and stumbled toward the light.“Have you come back?”“Don’t go… Please, don’t go…”He lunged at the glow but caught only a handful of cold air.He crashed to the floor, his chin striking the hard tiles and drawing blood. But he didn’t seem to feel the pain. He crawled forward on his hands and knees.“I’ll take you to the hospital. I’ll buy Teddy the best fever medicine there is.“I’ll never put the greater good before you again. I only want you…”I stood within the light and looked down at him.It was the first time in my life I had ever seen Gavin in such a wretched state. There was no trace of his usual condescending lectures. He was simply a pathetic man who had lost everything.“Gavin.”I spoke to him gently. It was the first time I had spoken to him since

Night fell, and with the power still out in Building Three, the apartment was shrouded in darkness and silence.Gavin lit a candle and placed it on the dining table. After changing into clean clothes, he sat in the chair across from me.Two place settings sat on the table beside the half-eaten bowl of spaghetti, which was water‑logged.“Luna, dinner’s ready.”Gavin picked up his spoon and forced down a mouthful of the cold, water‑logged spaghetti.“You always used to complain that I was too busy with work to eat with you and Teddy.“From now on, I’ll eat with you every day. Would that make you happy?”As he ate, fat tears fell into his bowl one after another.Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.Jack stood outside, holding a document.“Mr. Cooper… Investigators from the county inspector general’s office are here.”Jack’s voice was filled with reluctance.“They’re investigating your improper allocation of emergency resources during the rescue, which resulted in your wife and son’s dea

Outside the basement of Building Five, Wendy was directing several volunteers as they carried her belongings out.“Be careful with that box. It’s full of my daughter’s clothes.”“Don’t touch that cabinet. You couldn’t afford to replace it if you damaged it.”She had returned to her usual sweet yet haughty manner. Then she turned around and saw Gavin, covered in mud.“Gavin?”Wendy froze for a moment before putting on a sorrowful expression and hurrying toward him.“Why aren’t you staying with Luna a little longer to say goodbye?”“I can handle things here.”Gavin stopped three paces away and looked at her in silence.“You’ve already moved out your photo album and your daughter’s clothes?”“Yes. Thanks to the pumps you sent over, none of them were damaged.”Wendy failed to notice the strange tone in his voice and smiled smugly.Gavin nodded, his eyes falling on her spotless rubber boots.“Did your daughter have an asthma attack?”The smile on Wendy’s face stiffened.“No… She didn’t. She

Gavin’s breakdown didn’t last long.Or rather, he forced it down with an almost pathological sense of control. He rose to his feet and gave Jack his instructions.“Call the funeral home and have them send someone to pick them up.”His voice had regained its usual calm, but his eyes were dull and lifeless.“Tell the neighborhood crews to continue clearing the mud in Building Three. Don’t let this delay the work.”Jack stared at him in shock.“Sir, your wife and Teddy are both… and you still want them to continue clearing the mud?”Gavin didn’t answer. He simply picked up a rag and began wiping the mud from my face. His movements were gentle. The rain had stopped completely, and sunlight streamed through the shattered window. The neighbors gradually returned to the complex. When they saw medical workers carrying two body bags out of the first floor, the crowd erupted.“Isn’t that Mr. Cooper’s wife and son?”“How did they drown in their own home?”“Wasn’t Mr. Cooper in charge of the rescu

Just then, Wendy’s voice came from outside the door.“Gavin, are you in there?”Wendy wore rubber boots as she cautiously stepped inside. When she saw what had happened, she let out a terrified scream and covered her mouth.“Oh my God… How could Luna and Teddy…?”She walked over to Gavin and tried to pull him to his feet.“Gavin, don’t do this. The dead can’t be brought back. Luna was simply unlucky. You need to take care of yourself.”Gavin slowly turned his head and looked at Wendy. The warmth that had always been in his eyes was gone, replaced by icy coldness.“Unlucky?”He slowly repeated the word, his voice quiet.Frightened by his expression, Wendy took a step back.“Gavin, don’t scare me… Luna couldn’t save herself. It was an accident…”Gavin slowly rose from the ground, muddy water dripping from his pant legs.He ignored Wendy and turned toward the security door he had personally locked from the outside. The inside of the doorframe was covered in tightly packed scratch marks I

Gavin’s eyes widened sharply, and he stood frozen.I was wearing the old pajamas he hated, my arms wrapped tightly around Teddy to protect him.Teddy’s cheeks had turned bluish-purple, and his little hands were still clutching my clothes. Our clothes were caked with mud, and our bodies had grown pale and swollen from being submerged in the water.Gavin’s Adam’s apple bobbed as a strange, strangled sound escaped him.He didn’t scream or rush toward us.He simply stood there, staring at us with an eerily blank expression.“Luna, stop this.”His voice was soft, trembling faintly.“This isn’t funny.”He slowly walked toward us, each step seeming unbearably heavy.Water splashed against his pant legs, but he didn’t seem to notice. He crouched in front of us and reached out to touch my face.“Do you think smearing mud on your face will make me go easy on you?”His hand stopped in midair, his fingertips trembling slightly. He froze when he saw the deep gash across my neck, carved by a piece o
