Chapter 4

Author: Drop the Beep
Ryan posted a photo of Hannah wearing the ring online.

In it, she was leaning against Yates, the custom ring he'd had made for her clearly visible on her finger.

It didn't take long for people to dig up the rest.

Yates and I had been together for five years. And at Hannah's engagement party, I had been the one who put his hand in hers and asked him to pretend to be her boyfriend.

The backlash against Hannah was immediate. Everyone accused her of betraying the friend who had helped her and stealing my boyfriend.

As the scandal grew, Yates showed up with his PR team.

He handed me a prepared statement.

According to their version of events, Yates and I had ended our relationship amicably long ago, and I had personally brought him and Hannah together at the engagement party.

Hannah came out completely clean.

I became the unhinged ex who couldn't let go, harassed her former boyfriend, and maliciously smeared her own best friend.

Yates sat across from me.

"Sign this and record a short video. Once you do that, this whole thing goes away."

"Why am I the one apologizing?"

His brows drew together.

"Hannah doesn't handle this kind of pressure well. You know she's only just started getting over what happened with her engagement.

"She can't handle having the entire internet attack her like this."

There it was again.

Hannah couldn't handle it, so I was supposed to carry every humiliation for her.

To make the statement more convincing, the PR team wanted every trace of Yates deleted from my social media.

He held out his hand.

"Tessa, give me your phone."

I unlocked it and handed it over.

For five years, every photo I'd posted of us had been one he'd picked himself. Every public caption had been written by him, usually with my phone in his hand.

On our first anniversary, he'd posted:

[Thank you, Ms. Xavier, for walking into the rest of my life.]

On our third:

[Once I've chosen someone, that will never change.]

On my birthday last year, he'd posted a photo of the keys to our new home.

[The position of Mrs. Grant belongs to Tessa Xavier and no one else.]

Back then, he'd said there was no reason to hide our relationship. If he'd had his way, the whole world would have known I was his girlfriend.

Now he was holding that same phone and deleting five years of photos and promises, one post at a time.

The last picture was of the three of us before Hannah's engagement party.

I stood in the middle with one arm linked through Yates's and the other around Hannah.

Yates stared at it for two seconds.

Then he opened the crop tool and cut me out, leaving only himself and Hannah.

One of the PR staff handed me the prepared script.

The livestream began.

I read exactly what they had written.

"Yates Grant and I ended our relationship a long time ago.

"At the engagement party, I was the one who introduced him to Hannah.

"Hannah never interfered in our relationship."

By the time I finished, my hand was trembling so badly around the paper that one corner nearly cut into my fingertip.

A tear fell onto the words "harassing my ex," but I didn't dare wipe it away.

The camera was still on me.

So I sat there and personally turned five years of love into a story where I was the shameless woman intruding on theirs.

Comments flooded the screen almost immediately.

Some said I had finally admitted the truth. Others called me vicious. Some demanded that I apologize to Hannah.

One of the PR staff leaned closer and reminded me quietly, "Ms. Xavier, there's still one final line."

Hannah finally broke down.

"That's enough."

"We can't keep making Tessa take the blame for me."

Yates just looked at me.

"You're stronger than she is. It's one sentence. Say it, and this is over."

I looked at Hannah. She was wearing my pajamas, living in my bedroom, and wearing the ring Yates had custom-made for her. Yet there she stood with tears in her eyes, as if she were the one who'd been hurt.

My voice came out soft.

"Hannah, I'm sorry."

In the end, the person who had been betrayed stood in front of everyone and apologized to the people who had betrayed her.

Once the livestream ended, public opinion flipped almost immediately.

Hannah went from the woman who stole her best friend's boyfriend to the victim of a malicious smear campaign.

And I became the crazed ex who couldn't let go, harassed her former boyfriend, and spread lies about her best friend.

Yates visibly relaxed.

Hannah, however, couldn't handle the emotional strain. She ran out of the press conference in tears, and Yates immediately went after her.

Before leaving, he even turned back to tell me, "Go home and wait for me.

"Once I've settled Hannah down, I'll come back tonight, and we'll talk about us."

He had just erased every public trace of our five years together and forced me to admit that he was nothing more than my ex.

Yet he was still completely certain I would return to the home where Hannah had taken over our bedroom and wait for him.

I did go back.

But only to collect the last of my things.

When Yates came home late that night, my closet was empty.

The guest room had been cleared out completely.

My shoes were gone from the entryway. My toothbrush was gone from the bathroom.

The only thing left on the table was the statement he'd personally handed me.

Beneath my signature, I'd added one line.

[As of today, this statement officially takes effect.]

At that same moment, Hannah's phone lit up.

It was a scheduled message I'd arranged in advance.

[I saw your post the day you said you didn't want to give him back.]

[Now he's yours.]

A week before the wedding, Hannah came to see me.She looked older than she had three years ago, tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep. The ring Yates had once custom-made for her was gone from her finger. For a while, she just sat across from me in silence. Then she gave a brittle little laugh."You must be happy."When I didn't answer, she went on."Yates never married me. I lost my job. Most of my friends stopped speaking to me. Everyone thinks I'm the kind of person who steals her best friend's boyfriend after that friend helped her.""I didn't do any of that to you," I said. "Those were your choices."Her eyes immediately filled with tears."If you hadn't put his hand in mine at the engagement party, none of this would've happened."Three years later, and she was still looking for a way to make that night my fault."I asked him to help you save face for one evening. I didn't ask you to move into my bedroom, wear my clothes, sleep with my boyfriend, or stand in the weddi

By the time my three-year assignment ended, the project I'd led had won the industry's highest honor. The celebration was being held back in the city I'd left behind, and at first, I had no intention of going.Elliot changed my mind."You spent three years earning this," he said. "Don't let people who aren't worth it take your moment away from you too."So in the end, I boarded the flight back.Yates was waiting outside the venue when I left the celebration.Three years had changed him. He was much thinner now, and the easy confidence he used to carry was gone.In his hand was the key to the house we'd once planned to share."Tessa. The house is finished. I had everything done the way you used to like it."Hannah has never lived there."I looked at him. "So?"His eyes slowly reddened."I haven't been with anyone these past three years. Hannah left the city too."I know it's too late for any of this, but I still have to ask."Can you give me one more chance?"I was quiet for a moment."

After the press conference, Hannah moved back into the apartment. She set the ring down in front of Yates."You said you'd take responsibility for me. Everyone knows about us now, so how can you suddenly say you won't marry me?"Yates looked at her. "Taking responsibility for what happened doesn't mean I love you."Hannah gave a short, disbelieving laugh."You don't love me?"Then why did you drop Tessa and come running every time I called? Why did you give me her seat beside you? Why did you move me into your bedroom?"And if you knew that wedding was hers, why did you still get down on one knee and propose to me in front of my parents?"She stared straight at him."Every single time I reached for you, you chose me."Now that Tessa doesn't want you anymore, you're trying to make this all my fault?"Yates had no answer.Because Hannah wasn't wrong. She had betrayed me, but she hadn't forced Yates to keep choosing her. Every time he crossed another line, he had done it himself. Not long

I'd thought leaving the city would put everything behind me.It didn't.The livestream followed me all the way to Briarford. Someone recognized me as "the psycho who used seventeen women to test her boyfriend and then lied about her best friend," and before long, a secretly recorded video of me was circulating in the project team's group chat. Even one of our partners quietly suggested that someone else take over my role.Elliot set a printed report on the online backlash in front of me."Do you want the project team to issue a statement for you?"I shook my head. "No. I'll handle it myself."Before, I'd stayed silent because I was leaving anyway. There had been no point fighting to clear my name in a life I was already walking away from. Now their lies were threatening my career.I wasn't going to carry the consequences for them anymore.I gathered everything I had: five years of public posts documenting my relationship with Yates, the full video from Hannah's engagement party, Hanna

The Briarford assignment turned out to be even more demanding than I'd expected. By the end of my first week, I'd been surviving on four hours of sleep a night. The project manager, Elliot Vance, took one look at how pale I was and told me to go to the clinic."I'm fine," I insisted.A second later, the room went black. When I came to, I was lying in a hospital bed while a nurse filled out my paperwork. She stopped at one line and looked over at me."You don't have an emergency contact?"My gaze settled on the blank space. For years, that person had been Yates. Later, I'd added Hannah too. One was the man I'd loved for five years, the other the friend I'd trusted more than anyone.Yet when I finally collapsed, those two were tangled up together in my bedroom."Leave it blank," I said. The nurse frowned, but before she could argue, Elliot took the form and wrote down his own number."I'm responsible for my team while we're on this project."That was all he said. He didn't ask what had

By the time my flight landed in Briarford, it was already past midnight. The project manager was waiting for me at arrivals. He took my suitcase and casually asked, "No one came to see you off?"I paused, then shook my head."I don't have anyone."My phone hadn't stopped vibrating. Yates had called from more than a dozen different numbers, and I hadn't answered a single one.His last text read:[Tessa, stop this.][I've already taken Hannah home.][We can talk about the wedding and work something out.]Even now, he still thought I was throwing a tantrum. As if I'd walked away from that proposal simply because Hannah had borrowed my wedding. As if all he had to do was come back, and I would put the dress on again, slip the ring onto my finger, and keep waiting for him to marry me.I turned off my phone and got a new number.Meanwhile, Yates returned to the apartment we'd shared for three years.A mutual friend later told me what happened that night. The moment Yates opened the door, he
