Chapter 3

Autor: Drop the Beep
When Hannah's parents found out she'd slept with Yates, they insisted on taking her home.

Hannah agreed. Through her tears, she said, "I can't keep hurting Tessa like this."

Yates refused to let her go.

That evening, my wedding planner called me, sounding flustered.

"Ms. Xavier, Mr. Grant has asked to use the venue you reserved ahead of schedule. The names on the main screen have also been changed from yours to Yates Grant and Hannah Sawyer.

"Was this something the two of you agreed on?"

Three months earlier, Yates had told me that the most popular wedding venues booked up quickly. He still owed me a proper proposal, but there was no reason we couldn't reserve the wedding we wanted in advance.

From the white tulips to the processional music to the crystal floral arch, I'd chosen every detail myself.

He'd held me in his arms and said, "Next May, I'm going to make you the happiest bride in the world."

By the time I reached the hotel, the ballroom was already lit.

And sure enough, my name on the main screen had been replaced with Hannah's.

Yates and Hannah both saw me come in.

He didn't call off the proposal. He simply walked over and lowered his voice.

"I'm just letting Hannah use the venue tonight.

"Her parents don't believe I'm serious about taking responsibility for her. They're determined to take her away.

"You're not losing your wedding.

"Next year, I'll recreate all of this exactly for you."

I looked at the floral arch I'd chosen myself and suddenly found the whole thing almost laughable.

The future I'd waited five years for was, to him, nothing more than a set of decorations that could be duplicated whenever he wanted.

When Hannah's parents arrived, Yates got down on one knee in front of them.

He took out a ring.

For a moment, I thought he'd borrowed the wedding ring I'd picked out too.

Then the light caught it, and I realized I was wrong.

This ring had been custom-made for Hannah.

Her initials were engraved inside the band, and it had been sized specifically for her.

Yates hadn't just borrowed my wedding.

He'd already prepared something for Hannah that could never have belonged to anyone else.

Hannah didn't hold out her hand right away.

Crying, she asked, "Is this just for my parents, or are you actually going to marry me?"

Yates looked up at her.

"It's real. I'm going to marry you."

Hannah turned to look at me.

She knew perfectly well that she was standing in my place, surrounded by the wedding I'd planned, with the man I'd loved for five years kneeling in front of her.

Still, after a long silence, she held out her left hand.

"Tessa, I'm sorry.

"I don't want to be abandoned again."

Yates slid the ring onto her finger.

Hannah curled her fingers around it and didn't give it back.

When Yates stood and kissed her, she stiffened for a split second. Then she caught hold of his collar, closed her eyes, and kissed him back.

Her guilt was real.

But so was the fact that she wanted Yates.

I didn't interrupt them.

I simply turned around and found the wedding planner.

Right there in front of her, I canceled the venue reservation and every wedding arrangement under my name.

"Whoever's name you put on this wedding from now on has nothing to do with me."

That night, I packed my documents, my laptop, and most of my belongings and left.

Then I contacted the project manager and moved up the start date of my three-year assignment.

Yates thought he'd only borrowed my wedding for one night to reassure Hannah, someone he was afraid might leave at any moment.

He didn't know I'd already decided to leave both him and that future with someone else's name on it exactly where they were.

A week before the wedding, Hannah came to see me.She looked older than she had three years ago, tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep. The ring Yates had once custom-made for her was gone from her finger. For a while, she just sat across from me in silence. Then she gave a brittle little laugh."You must be happy."When I didn't answer, she went on."Yates never married me. I lost my job. Most of my friends stopped speaking to me. Everyone thinks I'm the kind of person who steals her best friend's boyfriend after that friend helped her.""I didn't do any of that to you," I said. "Those were your choices."Her eyes immediately filled with tears."If you hadn't put his hand in mine at the engagement party, none of this would've happened."Three years later, and she was still looking for a way to make that night my fault."I asked him to help you save face for one evening. I didn't ask you to move into my bedroom, wear my clothes, sleep with my boyfriend, or stand in the weddi

By the time my three-year assignment ended, the project I'd led had won the industry's highest honor. The celebration was being held back in the city I'd left behind, and at first, I had no intention of going.Elliot changed my mind."You spent three years earning this," he said. "Don't let people who aren't worth it take your moment away from you too."So in the end, I boarded the flight back.Yates was waiting outside the venue when I left the celebration.Three years had changed him. He was much thinner now, and the easy confidence he used to carry was gone.In his hand was the key to the house we'd once planned to share."Tessa. The house is finished. I had everything done the way you used to like it."Hannah has never lived there."I looked at him. "So?"His eyes slowly reddened."I haven't been with anyone these past three years. Hannah left the city too."I know it's too late for any of this, but I still have to ask."Can you give me one more chance?"I was quiet for a moment."

After the press conference, Hannah moved back into the apartment. She set the ring down in front of Yates."You said you'd take responsibility for me. Everyone knows about us now, so how can you suddenly say you won't marry me?"Yates looked at her. "Taking responsibility for what happened doesn't mean I love you."Hannah gave a short, disbelieving laugh."You don't love me?"Then why did you drop Tessa and come running every time I called? Why did you give me her seat beside you? Why did you move me into your bedroom?"And if you knew that wedding was hers, why did you still get down on one knee and propose to me in front of my parents?"She stared straight at him."Every single time I reached for you, you chose me."Now that Tessa doesn't want you anymore, you're trying to make this all my fault?"Yates had no answer.Because Hannah wasn't wrong. She had betrayed me, but she hadn't forced Yates to keep choosing her. Every time he crossed another line, he had done it himself. Not long

I'd thought leaving the city would put everything behind me.It didn't.The livestream followed me all the way to Briarford. Someone recognized me as "the psycho who used seventeen women to test her boyfriend and then lied about her best friend," and before long, a secretly recorded video of me was circulating in the project team's group chat. Even one of our partners quietly suggested that someone else take over my role.Elliot set a printed report on the online backlash in front of me."Do you want the project team to issue a statement for you?"I shook my head. "No. I'll handle it myself."Before, I'd stayed silent because I was leaving anyway. There had been no point fighting to clear my name in a life I was already walking away from. Now their lies were threatening my career.I wasn't going to carry the consequences for them anymore.I gathered everything I had: five years of public posts documenting my relationship with Yates, the full video from Hannah's engagement party, Hanna

The Briarford assignment turned out to be even more demanding than I'd expected. By the end of my first week, I'd been surviving on four hours of sleep a night. The project manager, Elliot Vance, took one look at how pale I was and told me to go to the clinic."I'm fine," I insisted.A second later, the room went black. When I came to, I was lying in a hospital bed while a nurse filled out my paperwork. She stopped at one line and looked over at me."You don't have an emergency contact?"My gaze settled on the blank space. For years, that person had been Yates. Later, I'd added Hannah too. One was the man I'd loved for five years, the other the friend I'd trusted more than anyone.Yet when I finally collapsed, those two were tangled up together in my bedroom."Leave it blank," I said. The nurse frowned, but before she could argue, Elliot took the form and wrote down his own number."I'm responsible for my team while we're on this project."That was all he said. He didn't ask what had

By the time my flight landed in Briarford, it was already past midnight. The project manager was waiting for me at arrivals. He took my suitcase and casually asked, "No one came to see you off?"I paused, then shook my head."I don't have anyone."My phone hadn't stopped vibrating. Yates had called from more than a dozen different numbers, and I hadn't answered a single one.His last text read:[Tessa, stop this.][I've already taken Hannah home.][We can talk about the wedding and work something out.]Even now, he still thought I was throwing a tantrum. As if I'd walked away from that proposal simply because Hannah had borrowed my wedding. As if all he had to do was come back, and I would put the dress on again, slip the ring onto my finger, and keep waiting for him to marry me.I turned off my phone and got a new number.Meanwhile, Yates returned to the apartment we'd shared for three years.A mutual friend later told me what happened that night. The moment Yates opened the door, he
