Kael sat alone in his study long after Elara had gone upstairs. The folder was open on the desk in front of him.

He read it twice, then a third time. He kept waiting for the part where it broke down, the part where she asked for the house, or half of Sterling Group’s shares, or some big amount of money that would let him tell himself she was just like every other wife who married into money and wanted to leave with more than she came with.

He waited for something he could use against her. A threat. Something he could fight against.

There wasn't one.

She only asked for what the prenup already gave her. Not one dollar more. She didn’t want any part of the company. She didn’t want the house, just a small payment for her own things.

It was so fair and clean that it bothered him more than any big demand would have. This wasn’t a woman trying to hurt him. This was a woman simply ending things.

Still, he picked up his phone and called his lawyer. Part of him needed to hear that this was just a trick, a scare tactic, or the first step in a fight that would change once he pushed back.

“It’s solid,” his lawyer told him ten minutes later, still sounding half-asleep. “She had a good lawyer. Everything matches the prenup exactly. If you sign, the divorce will be finished in thirty days.”

“She’s not asking for more?”

“Kael, she’s asking for less than what she’s allowed to take. You could even give her more, and she still couldn’t force you to do it.”

He paused.

“My advice? Don’t fight this. There’s nothing to fight.”

Kael hung up the phone and sat alone in the dark. The folder was still open under the desk lamp.

Something tight and heavy rose in his chest. He didn’t know what to call it, but it felt a lot like guilt.

Five years. She had given him five years. Now she was leaving and only asking for what the paper had already promised her, long before they ever really talked to each other.

He didn’t sit with that feeling, he never did. He looked at it once, then put it away as something easier to carry.

Irritation. That felt better, and he understood.

She should be asking for more, he told himself, standing up and walking back and forth across the study. Any other woman in her situation would do the same. She had every right to walk away with real money, a settlement that showed everything she had given up, everything she had put up with, and everything she had never once complained about out loud.

The fact that she wasn’t asking for more felt strange. In a way he didn’t want to think too hard, it felt like she was blaming him, like she was making a quiet point, like asking for so little was its own kind of weapon.

Fine. If she wouldn’t take what she deserved, he would give it to her anyway.

He sat back down and started making calls that morning, first to his lawyer, then to his accountant. He planned a settlement amount much larger than what the prenup required. A number big enough to mean something. A number that would let him walk away feeling like he had done the right thing, the generous thing, the kind of thing a better man would do for a woman he had failed.

It wasn’t really about her, even though he told himself it was. It was about closing a chapter, and balancing something out so he wouldn’t have to look at it again.

“She’ll take it,” he said out loud to the empty room, rehearsing the thought like it needed convincing. “She always takes what is offered.”

He believed it when he said it. Elara had spent five years taking what was offered and never once asking for anything else. Why would tonight be different?

Across the city, in a lawyer’s office with bright lights and a dirty coffee machine, Elara sat in a hard chair. She had already been there too long.

Her lawyer, a woman named Grace, wore sharp reading glasses. Her voice was softer than most people expected. She pushed a stack of papers across the table toward Elara.

“These are just the first papers,” Grace said. “Once he signs his copy, we can finish everything. It shouldn’t take long, because both sides are keeping it simple.”

Elara nodded and picked up the pen.

She signed where she was told to sign. She wrote her initials where she was told to, her hand did not shake even once, even though a strange empty feeling was growing in her chest. She knew what it was, but she would not name it yet.

It felt a little like standing in an empty room after a party had ended.

No one came with her tonight, not a sister, not a friend, not even one person from the family who had once celebrated her wedding as if two powerful families were joining, when it was really just a business deal dressed up in a white gown.

She never asked anyone to come with her. And if she was being honest, she wasn’t sure there was anyone left who would have said yes.

Grace looked up from the papers. Her expression was careful. “Do you want to wait before we finish the last part? Give yourself a little more time. Maybe have some family here for the final signing, if that would help.”

Elara looked down at the pen in her hand. She looked at the paper in front of her and at her own handwriting already filling the top half of the page. It looked steady and sure, even though she did not feel that way inside.

“There’s no one to wait for,” she said quietly.

She put the pen down and lifted her eyes. Her voice stayed steady the whole time, even though something behind her eyes almost broke.

“There never really was.”

Kael sat at his desk late one evening, reviewing the contracts spread out before him. He was comfortable with the familiar routine of working in the quiet of their shared home office. He heard the door open behind him and footsteps approaching. He recognized Elara’s presence immediately, even before turning around."Still working?" she asked warmly, without the distance she had once kept between them."Just finishing up," Kael said, setting down his pen, and turning to look at her properly.Elara stood in the doorway for a moment. As he looked at her, the scene suddenly reminded him of another evening years ago, in a different house. She had stood in a similar doorway then and calmly told him she wanted a divorce. He thought back to that evening, remembering how he'd also set down his pen, the careful distance between them, and how he had failed to truly understand what she was telling him until she slid that folder across his desk. This moment carried none of that earlier devastatin

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 159 — A Year Later

Elara woke to the smell of fresh coffee coming from the kitchen. Morning light shone softly through the curtains she had chosen herself when they moved into their new home. Nothing about this house reminded her of the cold, formal elegance of the original Sterling residence. She found Kael in the kitchen, still in his sleep clothes, with two mugs of coffee waiting on the counter. He had prepared hers with a little cream, just the way she liked it on difficult mornings, while his was plain."Good morning," he said, glancing up from the newspaper he was reading, offering her an easy smile."Morning," she said, settling onto the stool beside the counter, and taking her coffee with a grateful smile. There was nothing unusual about this morning. It was simply another peaceful moment in their daily life together, a comfortable routine they had built over time. It was entirely different from the formal distance and careful behaviour that had defined their first marriage.Sitting with her cof

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 158 — The Wedding

The garden was quiet and intimate, very different from the grand venue where Elara had married Kael the first time. Three hundred guests and a string quartet were part of that wedding, but the occasion had felt more like an obligation than a celebration of genuine love. This time, only thirty guests sat beneath a simple canopy decorated with string lights. Elara had chosen each person carefully because they had all played an important part in her difficult journey. Priya and Tomas sat near the front. After spending the past year building Vale Capital together, they had become like family to her. Daniel stood nearby, ready to walk her down the short aisle. He was the mentor who had believed in her long before she learned to believe in herself.Marcus sat quietly among the guests, with Sarah beside him. Their relationship had grown over the past few months, and she felt grateful to see him there. Despite everything that had once happened between them. He remained her friend, showing a l

Elara sat quietly, absorbing the full meaning of Kael’s offer and feeling deeply touched by the fact that he finally understood her for who she truly was.In that long, important moment, she thought about all the different versions of Kael she had come to know throughout their difficult journey. First, there was the cold man who had entered an arranged marriage with her and carefully explained the terms before their wedding. Then came the husband who was rarely present, whose neglect had slowly made her feel as though she no longer mattered. After that came the regretful ex-husband who had desperately tried to prove he had changed through grand gestures and dramatic displays. And now, sitting before her, was a different man, someone who had worked hard to change over many months and was finally showing her that he understood her, without putting on a show or expecting a particular outcome. As she honestly examined her feelings in that moment, she understood exactly what she wanted her

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 156 — The Proposal

Kael spent weeks getting ready, but this time he approached it differently than he would have in the past. He wasn't planning an expensive venue or a grand public display meant to prove everything in one dramatic moment.Instead, he spent time with Dr. Patel, working through what he truly wanted to say. He understood that this moment needed words that carried real meaning, supported by the consistent actions he had taken over time, not words meant only to impress."I think I'm ready," he told her during one of their final sessions before he planned to propose. "Not because I have a perfect plan, but because I finally understand what I need to say and why it matters.""What do you need to say?" Dr. Patel asked.Kael took a moment to think. "Everything I've truly learned," he replied. "Not the usual promises about loving her forever. I want to acknowledge who she really is and show her that I finally see her clearly, after years of not giving her the attention she deserved."For several

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 155 — The Real Partnership

Finalizing the formal partnership agreement between Sterling Group and Vale Capital took several weeks of careful, and detailed negotiation. Both legal teams worked through the terms to make sure the agreement reflected the mutual, equal partnership Kael and Elara had deliberately built in their personal relationship.“I want to review this final section once more,” Kael said during one of their last negotiation meetings. He looked over the governance structure they had developed together. “The oversight committee must have equal representation from both firms. I mean truly equal, not based on how much capital each firm contributes.”“I agree,” Elara said, carefully reading through the wording beside him. “I think this reflects exactly what we discussed. Both firms should have an equal voice, regardless of which one contributes more money to a particular venture.”They carefully reviewed the remaining details, both aware of the importance of what they were building. This was not just
