Chapter 7

(Arya’s POV)

I had barely slept last night, tossing and turning in my anxiety for today. I had been given a chance, and I was worried I’d blow it up after talking big to Blake.

When morning arrived, I quickly showered and threw on a pair of dark jeans and a black sweatshirt. I wore my hair in a ponytail, then hurriedly slipped on a pair of black steel-toe boots.

Blake had sent a text to remind me that someone would be at the hotel to pick me up at 9am. It was almost 9, and grabbing my

Chapter 76.Arya’s POVI was nibbling on my fingers while pacing up and down the hallway, my stomach churning with anxiety. There's something about being in a hospital that makes time go faster and slower at the same time. Minutes stretched for so long that I couldn’t tell whether I’d been pacing the same stretch of tiled floor for ten minutes or an entire hour, and the hallway light was too harsh and bright, casting everything in a sterile white glow that made everything seem eerie.I bit down on my fingernail trying to stop my thoughts from spiraling back to the same place they had been circling since we arrived, but it wasn't working.I could still see Blake on the couch, I could still picture his body convulsing as he was foaming at his mouth. I could still feel the wave of horror and fear that washed over me as I watched him, helpless to do anything.I dragged my fingers through my hair and turned sharply, pacing back the other way, my footsteps echoing faintly in the quiet lobb

Chapter 75Arya’s POVIt was already past midnight by the time the last of the guests had drifted out of the house and the music finally died down, so Blake’s parents insisted that we should stay the night, and I didn’t have the energy to argue, not when my feet ached and my head throbbed faintly from too much noise and too many forced smiles, so I smiled politely and thanked them.Blake and I walked up the stairs in silence, my thoughts filled with how I was going to survive another night with him in the same room.It was quite ironic, really. He cut our honeymoon short because he was tired of sharing a space with me, only to end up with both of us sleeping in his childhood bedroom. And we couldn't exactly ask his parents for another spare room now. When we reached his bedroom, he hesitated at the door, his hand hovering over the knob, as if there were something he wanted to say, but after a few minutes, he cleared his throat and opened the door.“I’ll take the couch,” he said as we

Chapter 74Blake’s POVI heard my name being called at least twice before I realized someone was actually speaking to me and trying to get my attention.“Blake.”I blinked, refocusing my gaze on the three men standing across from me, mid conversation, and looking mildly irritated as they stared at me. One of them cleared his throat.Right, we were talking about an investment that would benefit all of us, me the most. But I couldn't concentrate, my head kept twisting around despite my better judgement as I searched for Arya.“As I was saying,” he continued, adjusting his cufflinks, “the Singapore investors are expecting a follow up by Monday and we can’t afford any delays.”“Yes. Of course,” I replied automatically, but the words felt hollow as they left my mouth. My attention wasn’t in the room and it hadn’t been for a while after I'd overheard what Caroline had said about Arya. Hell, half the room had heard her, and even I could feel the atmosphere change from welcoming to slightly h

Chapter 73Arya’s POVI didn't even know that the Donovan's had a rooftop. I found a staircase and followed it until it brought me here, but I was grateful for the solitude. Here, it was quiet. There were no whispers or stares following me, no expectations to be someone I wasn't, and no judgement when I eventually failed to live up to their expectations. The night air felt cool as it brushed gently against my skin, and I leaned against the railing, tilting my head back to stare at the sky, letting the stars blur as my thoughts tangled into one another. If I focused hard enough, I could almost pretend I was alone in the world, but that illusion was shattered when a hand tapped my shoulder.I jolted violently, spinning around with my heart in my throat, only to come face to face with Janette.Janette wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. “Easy,” she murmured into my hair. “It’s just me.”I wrapped my arms around her, clutched the back of her dress and held onto her l

Chapter 72Arya’s POVThe room buzzed with warmth and everywhere I turned, people I didn't even know were beaming at me with their glasses raised, their hands clasping mine as though they had known me for years instead of minutes.“Congratulations on your wedding, dear.”“You make such a beautiful couple.”“You’re glowing, absolutely glowing.”I smiled until my cheeks ached and nodded until my neck felt stiff, murmuring my thanks on autopilot, all the while acutely aware of the fact that none of these people cared about me in any way. They only wanted to be connected with me because I was now part of the Donovan's and the smiles and congratulations were all fine, hiding their greed and ambition. They weren't congratulating me, Arya, they were congratulating the idea of me as Blake's wife. And I had no other choice than to play my part to perfection.I stood with a group of women near the center of the room, all of them impeccably dressed, their clothes and jewelry understated but unmi

  • I PAID A BILLIONAIRE FOR A NIGHT    Chapter 71.

Chapter 71Blake’s POVThe flight back home passed quietly, the silence thick with all the words neither of us seemed willing to say. Arya sat beside me, her body angled away from me like the narrow armrest between us was a wall, but still I found myself painfully aware of every inch of space between us.She stared out of the window for most of the journey, her reflection faint against the glass and her eyes distant and unreadable, while I pretended to be absorbed in my phone, scrolling through emails I wasn’t actually reading because my eyes wouldn't stop slipping up to stare at her after every few minutes. It was a bit weird, really — two people who were supposed to be happily married, sitting inches apart yet behaving like total strangers who had accidentally booked the same seat.Even when the plane jolted with turbulence and my hand itched to reach for her, she never spared me a glance. I had to curl my fingers into my palm and remind myself that I couldn't touch her anymore.Aft
