“You're three weeks pregnant,” the doctor's voice replayed in my head, looping over me like a record long after I've left the hospital.
I sniffed, pressing back the sob that rose to my throat. How could I have gotten pregnant the very first time my husband touched me? How could I have taken in amidst everything I was facing in my marriage.
I leaned into the car seat, watching the cars pass by trying to wonder how Cassian, my husband, was going to react.
For three years that we've been married, I've gotten nothing from him except indifference, coldness and cruelty. This was going to be no different.
He would hate it, that was certain.
The thought alone broke the little spirit left inside of me.
Cassian had never touched me, until that day he came home drunk, completely lost of his senses. The night together was wild, with me giving in completely as one of my dreams was coming true.
And for a split moment, I had thought that was going to mean something, that the fact that we had sex was going to change something in our marriage.
But Cassian was never like that.
The next day, he had cruelly dismissed me like a stain, not wanting to talk of what happened, as if I was something disposable.
And somehow I got pregnant. From that one interaction.
Why did life ever decide to play me like this?
At that, I paused, my hands going over my belly. That one interaction led to a baby. The one mistake that I held dearly even as Cassian dismissed it led to this.
What if… this could repair our broken marriage? What if I was sent this pregnancy because it's the one thing that could bring Cassian closer to me?
“I should tell him,” I whispered and nodded, grabbing my phone. I dialled his number two times but he didn't pick up. “He has to know,” I whispered to myself.
Yes, I had to let him know immediately.
“Turn around. Voss meridian group,” I said to the driver.
“Ma'am?”
“Take me to Voss meridian” I reiterated as I exhaled.
Perhaps this could fix our marriage. Maybe this one pregnancy was all we needed.
Every minute in the car felt suffocating as my mind kept replaying the drunken night. The way every part of my body had responded to Cassian’s touch only for him to dismiss me right after.
Was this baby really going to fix things?
The moment we reached Voss meridian and I stepped out of the car, I clasped my hands together, trying to form my words. Cassian never liked me visiting unless he needed me to.
When he wanted me to plan events, find out what employees and investors expected at events. That's the only time he found me worthy to visit.
But I couldn't wait. Since the doctor broke the news, my mind had been eating me up. I needed to let him know.
“I am sorry to visit without letting you know but I started experiencing certain symptoms, Cassian. I checked and now I'm pregnant,” I rehearsed my words until I was passing by the secretary's desk.
She wasn't there and soon I was standing in front of Cassian's office. As I took my hands to the door, I could swear I heard a light whimper but without another thought, I pushed the door open.
I stepped in and my eyes widened. Because there on the office couch my husband sat naked, a woman sitting right on his torso.
The world tilted in my face and I let out a gasp as I took a step back.
Both of them turned immediately and Cassian raised a brow as he disengaged from the woman while I stared at them.
“What are you doing here?” Cassian asked and I wanted to believe I was hearing wrong.
That I hadn't just caught my husband cheating.
But the sight in front of me never changed.
Cassian was with another woman.
“I—” I choked on my sob as I took a step backwards, my eyes darting from him to the woman. Just hours ago, I was throwing my intestines up, got what I considered the biggest shock of my life and now… here my husband was, with another woman.
“You are cheating on me,” my voice cracked as a tear rolled down, the look in Cassian's eyes shattering every hope I ever had.
Minutes ago, I was wondering if the baby could bring us together… maybe we could finally have a wonderful family that I so craved.
The lady finally stood from the couch, slipping into one of her underwear. She took two steps until she was standing by Cassian's side. “I thought you said she's always confined to that mansion of yours.”
My lips trembled as I looked at Cassian as he shrugged. “I said mostly, not always.”
“Serena,” he called, holding my eyes, “this is Vivienne.”
My limbs stilled, every sound swallowed into nothing behind me.
Vivienne. He had mentioned her countlessly. The one woman he said he could never get over. His first love.
Serena's POV The papers sat between us on the table, and I couldn't stop staring at them like they were the only solid thing left in the room.Freedom. That's what they were. That's all I let myself see, even as I wondered if I should go on with it. But I needed to, I couldn't keep staying with a man who didn't care whether I lived or died.I couldn't keep hoping for the best with a man that thought my cry for help was because I was seeking attention. Beside me, Alissa gave me a slight nod as if she could feel me tense up.I flashed her a small smile and looked at Cassian's lawyer. “Shall we begin?”“Everything is in order,” the lawyer said, sliding the pen toward Cassian. “We just need your signatures, and it's done.”Done.I almost wanted to cry from relief. After everything, after the accident, after losing my baby in a hospital bed alone while he didn't even bother to call, this was finally going to be over. I was finally going to be free from a marriage that had done nothing but
Serena's POV White. That was the first thing I registered — a blinding, sterile white, before the rest of the world sharpened into focus. The beeping came next. Steady, rhythmic, too loud in the silence around it. My body ached in places I couldn't pinpoint, a dull throb settling deep into my bones the more consciousness returned to me.I blinked slowly, my vision swaying before the ceiling finally came into view. A hospital ceiling. Why was I in the hospital?I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my side, forcing a groan out of me. I remained still on the bed, trying to put pieces together. And slowly, it flooded in.The doctor's announcement. My confusion. Me deciding to go see Cassian, and…A gasp tore out of my throat immediately. I had an accident. A car had crashed into me while I was distracted, and… and I felt something warm trickle down my feet.I reached for my tummy the next second. I hope my baby was fine. I hope my baby was okay. The door creaked open, a nurse
Serena's POV “This shouldn't be with you. It should be her,” Cassian's words replayed in my head. The day we got married, he confessed he never wanted this to be with you. He wanted a different woman.Vivienne.This was the woman Cassian wanted, the woman I could never be. The woman I couldn't be within three months of our marriage. Vivienne reached for her clothes and after putting them on, she stepped forward, her eyes going over me.“So, this is her,” her lips raised in a small smirk as she tied her robe. “This is the woman your grandmother chose for you,” her voice was soft, almost bored and she stopped when she was finally inches away from me. “Cassian has told me so much about you.”I looked at Cassian but he only stared back at me, no remorse. He grabbed his shirt and turned to me. “You should leave.”I should leave. My husband was asking me to leave.I had just walked into a room where my husband was, starked naked with another woman and all I'm being told is to leave. A sad
