Chapter 4

작가: Reneemoon
I was thrown out of the jewelry store.

After drifting through the streets alone for a long time, I went back to my apartment, held Lucky, and deleted every one of their contacts.

Time to let go.

But a week later, in the middle of the night, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Derek's number.

I didn't want to answer, but it kept ringing like a death knell.

I picked up, irritated. On the other end, Derek was half-screaming, half-sobbing.

"Vivian! Mom's dying!"

"Her appendix burst! The doctor says she needs surgery and the deposit is fifteen thousand dollars! Transfer it now!"

In the background, I could faintly hear Mom's weak voice cursing.

"...selfish brat... no sense of family..."

My heart lurched.

Even now, even after everything, hearing "she's dying" made my hand tremble.

"Fifteen thousand?" I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm. "I don't have it. All my money goes to Lucky."

"Cut the crap!" Derek roared. "Sell that mutt! Or melt down that gold chain! If anything happens to Mom, I will haunt you for the rest of your life!"

I scoffed.

"Then sell that luxury condo of yours. There's your money right there."

Two seconds of silence on the other end, then Mom's hoarse scream came through.

"Are you insane? That's your brother's image! Without that condo, how is he supposed to network?"

"Let me tell you something. Fine, don't pay. But if I die, it'll be your fault! You'll carry that guilt for the rest of your life!"

Right. Another shakedown.

I let out a long breath and smiled.

"Fine. I'll transfer it right now."

Expressionless, I typed the amount into my banking app and hit send.

Five seconds later, Derek texted a screenshot of the receipt. The amount read: $5.00.

"What the hell, Vivian? Five bucks? Who are you trying to fool?"

I replied coldly, "Five dollars should cover an IV bag. As for the surgery, if the condo can't be sold, I guess you'll just have to wait."

I hung up and blocked his number.

But I wasn't as calm as I expected.

Even with Lucky licking my palm as if trying to comfort me, my heart was still pounding.

Apparently, that last thread of family attachment still hadn't snapped.

I took a deep breath, threw on my jacket, and went to the hospital anyway.

When I got there, I'd just rounded the corner into a shadowed stretch of hallway when voices from the hospital room reached me.

Derek was complaining.

"...she's so stubborn. Five bucks. She actually sent five bucks. She really doesn't care about you anymore."

Then Mom's voice.

"...so what? She's always been the type to cave when you go soft on her. We'll press harder tomorrow. She'll pay up. I raised her to be capable for a reason. She's supposed to help you out. She can't just cut us off like that..."

My fingernails dug into my palms.

Of course it was a shakedown.

I was about to turn and leave when Derek said something next that nailed me to the floor.

"But what if she finds out you took out another three hundred thousand in loans under her name to buy a new condo?"

"Finds out what? I borrowed from loan sharks. They only care about who's on the hook.

"Even if I die, she can't shake that debt! If she keeps refusing to pay because of that stupid dog, they'll dox her and make sure she loses her job!"

"And that luxury condo stays in your name. Nobody touches it..."

My body went rigid. The blood in my veins froze solid.

So she'd bought Derek another condo.

And she'd taken out the loans in my name.

I wasn't just her ATM. I was the daughter she planned to saddle with every debt.

I backed away quietly, my steps hollow, and walked out of the hospital.

The cold wind hit my face. The spot where she'd slapped me days ago still ached faintly, but compared to the chill inside me, it was nothing.

After a long silence, I pulled out my phone and found a number I'd saved a long time ago: Attorney Daniel Lewis.

When he picked up, my voice was terrifyingly calm.

"Mr. Lewis, hello. I want to sue my mother."

I didn't back away. I sidestepped, caught his momentum, grabbed and shoved in one motion, and drove my elbow hard into his lower back.He yelped in pain. Off-balance, I seized a fistful of his hair, pressed my knee into his back, and pinned him flat on the ground, his cheek grinding against the cold, filthy pavement."That all you've got?" I leaned down and whispered in his ear, my voice cold as ice. "I used to let you win because I thought we were family. Now I know none of you ever deserved it. Touch me one more time, or let any of these lowlifes touch me, and I promise you'll spend the rest of your life behind bars."The words had barely left my mouth when Lucky snarled and lunged at one of the thugs trying to step forward. The charge sent all of them stumbling backward. Derek was scared out of his mind, blood running from his nose down his chin, every trace of his earlier bravado gone. All that was left was begging. "Sis... sis, I'm sorry... I'll never do it again... please let me

He must have thought those thugs would intimidate me. He got right in my face, spraying me with spit."Vivian Harper! Don't think you're untouchable now! Mom's locked up because of you! My wife took my kid and ran because of you! You destroyed this family! Happy now?"He jabbed a grimy finger into my shoulder."You're my sister. What's wrong with me spending a little of your money? It's family money anyway! Now you think you're too good to acknowledge your own brother? You tore my marriage apart, and if you don't hand over the cash today, you're not leaving!"The three thugs behind him rolled their shoulders and closed in. One of them was flipping a baton, sneering."Man, why bother talking to her? No money, then the phone and the necklace stay."Lucky's fur bristled instantly. His massive frame planted itself in front of me, a deep, continuous growl rolling from his throat.I rested my hand lightly on Lucky's head, easing the tension in his body, then looked up at Derek."You still re

I sat in the plaintiff's chair, ice running through my veins. But a moment later, that chill transformed into pure resolve. So even thinking of myself as the family outsider had been too generous. To them, I wasn't family at all.The gavel fell. The trial was over. The outcome was never in doubt.Mom was sentenced to prison for identity theft, fraud, and filing a false report.Derek was also convicted as an accomplice. The title disputes over both condos were handled separately. The fraudulent loan agreements were voided, and the condos were seized and sold to satisfy the portion of debt legally traceable to Mom and Derek. I owed nothing.Mom collapsed in the defendant's chair. Derek buried his head as low as it would go.I stood up without looking at either of them again.Walking out of the courthouse, I squinted in the bright sunlight.I took a deep breath. The air tasted like freedom.I looked down at Lucky. He seemed to be in a good mood too, wagging his tail at me, the gold tag on

"Responsibility?" My attorney let out a cold laugh and presented several pieces of evidence to the court. "Your Honor, the medical records show that the plaintiff has been gluten intolerant since childhood. The defendant knew this, yet spent years making only Derek's favorite food, sandwiches, leaving the plaintiff to skip meal after meal and become chronically malnourished.""Furthermore, these financial records show that since the plaintiff began working, the defendant extracted most of her salary under various pretenses. Whatever debt she claims Vivian owed her for being raised has already been repaid many times over."Mom's pitiful expression went rigid. But she quickly recovered, dabbing at her tears, her voice hoarse."Everything I did was for this family! My daughter has always been independent and capable, but Derek is different. He's more sensitive, more fragile. He was just starting his career. The pressure on him was enormous, and he had a family to support.""She's his olde

No one accused me anymore. They just looked at Mom with silent condemnation.Mom's eyes darted around, all her earlier bluster gone.I pushed the tears back and fixed her with a stare as sharp as ice."Mom, your love was always too expensive for me. I was never good enough to earn it, and I don't want it anymore.""What you just did down here with that megaphone, spreading lies, disrupting my life, that's harassment and defamation.""I won't go soft again. I'll see you at the police station tomorrow."I held up my phone, still on a live call. Attorney Lewis's calm voice came through the speaker."Ms. Harper, the police report has been accepted. Officers are on their way. Additionally, regarding the evidence that your mother conspired with others to extort you by threatening to release private material, we have that secured as well."Mom and Derek went white as sheets, staring at me like I was a monster."As for the private footage your mother handed over, tell whoever's behind this: if

My pen stopped. I walked to the balcony and looked down.Mom was sitting on the edge of the apartment complex's pool, megaphone in hand, as if she was about to throw herself into the water.Derek stood next to her, wiping his tears, and grabbed her just in time.A crowd of elderly neighbors swarmed over, pulling Mom back."Don't! If you jump, you'll be giving your daughter exactly what she wants!""Young people these days, no sense of family at all. So cold!""Exactly. She probably thinks her own family's a burden. So selfish!"Someone had gone live. A phone camera was trained on Mom's tear-streaked face.Comments flew across the screen. Within minutes, someone had doxxed me."Wait, that name sounds familiar. Isn't she from that company? I heard she just quit... threw away her whole career just to ditch her own mother. That's cold."The hate flooded in. Some even threatened to track me down.I watched the spectacle below with cold eyes, listening to accusations from people who didn't k
