The blade was inside Evelyn’s chest.

She stared down at it.

There was no blood.

That frightened her more than blood would have.

The silver weapon had passed through Lucian’s heart and somehow crossed the distance between them without touching the space between their bodies.

Its hilt remained in Lucian’s chest.

Its blade ended inside hers.

By one weapon.

By one wound.

By something neither of them could see.

Lucian looked down.

His face went pale.

“Evelyn…”

She looked at him.

The black crown on Evelyn's chest burned. She fell to her knees.“Mommy!”Eli caught her hand.Lucian was beside her instantly.“Evelyn!”The door in front of them shook.Once.Twice.Then silence.Kael kept his blade raised.“Whatever is behind that door, we end it now.”Evelyn looked at him.“No.”Kael frowned.“No?”“We don't fight it.”Lucian stared at her.“Then what do we do?”Evelyn looked at the black mark.“We listen.”The door opened. The room beyond was exactly as she had seen it.The first house. The white tree. The bed.The ancient father kneeling beside it.And the baby in the arms of the original Evelyn. But something was different. There was no darkness. No army of versions. No ancient mother. No throne.Only a woman holding her child.Evelyn stepped forward. The original Evelyn looked at her.“You finally came.”Evelyn's voice trembled.“Who are you?”The woman smiled.“You.”Evelyn shook her head.“No. I've already met thousands of versions of myself.”“They were pie

Lucian screamed. The sound tore through the darkness.Evelyn lunged toward him, but the distance between them stretched like an endless corridor.“Lucian!”He dropped to his knees. One hand pressed against his chest. There was no wound. No blood. But something was missing. His heart. The woman standing behind Eli held the glowing heart in both hands. The heart was beating.Once.Twice.Then slower.Evelyn stared at it.“Give it back.”The woman smiled.“You still think everything can be returned.”“Give it back!”“You don't understand.”“I understand enough.”Evelyn stepped forward.“That is his heart.”The woman looked at Lucian.“No.”Lucian looked up.His face was pale. The woman continued.“It is the heart you gave him.”Evelyn froze.“I gave him freedom.”“You gave him yourself.”“No.”“You gave him a reason to exist.”Lucian slowly stood.“Evelyn.”She looked at him.His voice was weak.“Don't listen to her.”The woman laughed.“You see? Even now he protects you.”Lucian took on

  • I Quit Being the CEO’s Shadow    The Last World

“Now we can finally begin the last world.”The man stood inside the little house.Evelyn stared at him.He had her face. Her eyes. Her mouth.Even the small scar beneath his eyebrow was hers. But he was not her.Lucian moved in front of Evelyn.“No.”The man smiled.“You always do that.”“Do what?”“Stand between her and the truth.”Lucian's expression hardened.“Then tell it.”The man looked at Evelyn.“You destroyed the first world because you could not accept losing the people you loved.”Evelyn said nothing.“You created countless worlds to replace it.”Still nothing.“You divided your memories so you could forget.”The man stepped outside.“And eventually, you created one world where none of those things happened.”Evelyn looked around. The small house. The white tree. The quiet garden. There was no darkness. No ancient beings. No endless versions. No dead worlds.Just peace.Too much peace.“This is it,” Evelyn whispered. The man nodded.“The last world.”Eli stepped closer to h

“You finally found your son.”Evelyn could not move. The woman standing inside the doorway held Eli's hand.Eli was alive. That should have been enough. But Evelyn knew better than to trust what the first world showed her.She looked at the woman. Then at Eli.Then at Lucian.“And now he has to choose which mother comes with him.”Evelyn stepped forward.“No.”The woman smiled.“You don't even know what you're refusing.”“I know my son.”Eli looked at her.“Mommy.”Evelyn's heart broke. She wanted to run to him.Every instinct told her to cross that doorway. But the woman tightened her grip around Eli's hand.“He cannot leave with both of us.”Evelyn stared at her.“Why?”“Because there is only one place left.”“What place?”“The world that survives.”The ancient father slowly stood. For the first time, he looked relieved.Evelyn turned toward him.“You knew.”“Yes.”“You knew she was here.”“Yes.”“You knew Eli was with her.”“Yes.”Evelyn's voice became cold.“Then you knew this ent

Boom. The sound shook the first world.Evelyn felt it inside her bones.Eli's body remained suspended above the ground, his head tilted backward, his chest split by a thin line of black light.Inside that opening was a heart.Small.Fragile.Beating.But every time it pulsed, the entire world responded.Boom.Lucian cried out.The silver thread connecting their chests tightened around him.“Evelyn!”She turned. His knees buckled.Blood ran from his mouth.“Cut the thread.”“No.”“If that heart finishes waking up, it will take everything connected to it.”“I won't cut you loose.”“You have to.”“No.”“Evelyn!”She ran toward him.The ancient father stepped between them.“You still refuse to understand.”Evelyn stopped.“I understand enough.”“No. You are repeating the same mistake.”“What mistake?”“Choosing one life over everything else.”Evelyn's eyes hardened.“I am not choosing one life.”She looked at Eli.“I am choosing my family.”The ancient father shook his head.“That word is

Evelyn could not breathe.Lucian stood across from her.Alive.Unchained.Smiling.But something was wrong.Everything about him was right. The black hair. The silver eyes. The familiar scar near his jaw.Even the slight tilt of his head when he looked at her.It was perfect.Too perfect.Evelyn took one step backward. The man smiled wider.“You missed me.”Her heart broke at the sound of his voice. It was Lucian's voice.Exactly.Eli stepped in front of her.“No.”The man looked at him.“Eli.”Eli froze.Only Lucian called him that way.Not Daddy. Not son.Not child.Eli.The same quiet voice Lucian used when Eli had nightmares. The same voice that had once promised him that monsters could not reach him.Eli's eyes filled with tears.“Daddy?”The man smiled.“Yes.”Evelyn grabbed Eli's shoulder.“Don't.”The man's expression changed.“You don't recognize me?”Evelyn stared at him.“I recognize his face.”His smile faded.“That isn't the same thing.”“No.”Evelyn's voice steadied.“It
