Chapter 5

Author: Feath
The sun in Dalco was blazing, leaving me feeling drained all over.

I had rented a traditional-style house by Hirai Lake, having paid six months' rent upfront.

The landlady was an older woman. When she saw me dragging my suitcase alone, she kindly helped me carry my luggage inside.

"Miss, did you come alone to Dalco for a vacation?"

"I'm not here for a vacation. I'm staying permanently," I said as I placed my books one by one onto the wooden shelf by the windowsill.

"It's nice to live here.

It had stopped raining in Dalco.I put on a washed-out sports jacket, pulled my hair back into a casual ponytail, and pushed open the front yard's gate.My phone buzzed in my pocket. I bent over to unlock my bike and pulled out my phone at the same time.A message from Natalie popped up on the screen."The property transfer is all done! The agent says we can list it for sale at any time. How much are you going to sell it for?"That apartment was the last thread connecting me to that city.I got onto the bike, propped one foot on the ground, and typed a reply with one hand."Just go with the market price. What do you think about using the money from the sale to open a small guesthouse here, run by the two of us?"Less than ten seconds after I sent it, Natalie's enthusiastic reply came back."You're the best, boss!"Right after that came a voice message, which I played. Natalie was shouting in a restrained voice, "Ms. Howard! You just wait! I'm submitting my resignation today a

After Brandon left Dalco, my life had completely returned to its usual peacefulness.Natalie told me that Brandon fell seriously ill after he went back. He had a fever of 104 degrees Fahrenheit and had to spend three days in the hospital on an IV drip. After he was discharged, he applied to the company for a transfer to cargo routes. He no longer flew passenger planes. "I heard it's because every time he walked into the cockpit and saw the empty observation seat, he would just zone out. He almost caused an accident. The company had no choice but to move him to cargo."There was a wistful trace in Natalie's voice, but more than anything, it carried a sense of satisfaction. As for Wilma, without Brandon to shield her, all her privileges at the company were stripped away, and coworkers she had offended in the past piled on one after another. Unable to withstand the exclusion, she quit voluntarily.I felt nothing at all. What became of them was no longer any of my concern.…One

Brandon's sudden appearance didn't shock me at all. I simply swallowed the last bit of jelly, pulled out a tissue, and wiped the corner of my mouth."You got the wrong place. This is a private residence," I said calmly. He strode in and closed the gate behind him.Brandon had lost a lot of weight. He had dark stubble covering his chin, and his shirt—usually always pressed crisp and sharp—was now wrinkled and clinging to his body. His disheveled state was nothing like his polished, distinguished image as a captain."Melissa, I was wrong," he croaked out in a hoarse voice. As he approached me, the bloodshot veins in his eyes became visible. "I kicked Wilma out. I threw away all her things, too. From now on, the observation seat is only for you. I also changed my phone password to your birthday. Will you come home with me?"He resembled a child who had done something wrong as he eagerly showed off his "proof of change".I looked at him calmly, as if I were looking at a stranger.

Frightened, Wilma jumped back two steps at Brandon's roar. She had never seen Brandon like this.In front of her, he had always been a composed, well-mannered senior captain who handled everything with ease."Why are you getting mad at me?" Wilma's eyes turned red-rimmed, and her tears threatened to spill over."Is Melissa arguing with you over the northern lights trip again? I told you to give the ticket back to her, but you insisted on dragging me along. Now that she's run away from home, why are you taking your anger out on me?"Brandon glared intently at her. When he saw how utterly wronged she looked, he suddenly felt a wave of nausea churn in his stomach. This was the woman he had cherished and "cared for" for four years.Wilma's first reaction after Melissa left wasn't guilt. It was to quickly distance herself and even shift the blame."You long knew she had left, didn't you?" Brandon stood up and slowly approached her. "That day in the waiting lounge, you deliberately gr

Like a crazed man, Bradon started calling everyone who knew me. The first person he called was Natalie. The moment the call connected, he fired off the questions. "Natalie, where's Melissa? Where did she go?" Natalie let out a cold laugh. "Oh, Captain Smith, finally back from your vacation? Were the northern lights beautiful?""Don't give me that crap! Where exactly is Melissa? There's a limit to how much of a fit she can throw!""Throwing a fit?" Natalie raised her voice. "Brandon, is your brain only filled with planes? Who cancels their entire phone number because of a tantrum?""She's just trying to force me to back down!" Brandon snapped, clenching his teeth. "So I didn't take her to see the northern lights and gave the ticket to Wilma. Fine! Can't I just make it up to her?""Brandon, you still don't know why she left, do you?"Natalie took a deep drag of her cigarette and slowly blew out the smoke."Six years ago, you were flying an international route when she was diagno

This place is good for the soul," the landlady said with a smile before leaving.I collapsed onto the bed with its clean sheets and looked up at the carved beams on the ceiling. There was no roar of engines, no radar screens, and no waiting up for someone. That night, I got the most peaceful sleep I'd had in eight years.…Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, in Reykiford, Brandon was going through something. I didn't want to know about it, but Natalie later told me everything on the phone.
