Chapter 2

Autor: Apis Fortis
When I first met Melville, my men and I were dealing with a mole Charles Whitmore had planted in our family.

We'd just sent the guy to meet his maker when Melville came charging in and pulled me behind him.

He thought I was some poor girl being harassed by gangsters.

The idea was new to me, and I found it amusing.

I was the only heir to the Calvetti family. I'd grown up surrounded by guns, betrayal, and blood.

My family was famous for being cold-blooded and practical. They loved me, but they never spoiled me, because that would only make me weak.

I'd never met a hothead who would rush in to protect a complete stranger. I fell for him.

Dewey Marino, the family's underboss, was about to pull a gun and teach him a lesson, but I stopped him with a look.

Melville got me away from those dangerous-looking men, never guessing I was the one in charge of them.

After that, we naturally grew close and ended up together.

The day after we made it official, I decided to tell him who I really was. But during our date, we walked straight into a shootout between two small-time local gangs.

Melville gripped my hand and hauled me out of there. "Filthy animals!"

The disgust in his eyes made me swallow my confession. Despite my pride, I was afraid for the first time in my life.

After that, we lived in a dark, damp basement and relied on each other for everything. At our lowest, we even fought homeless people for bread from the trash.

So even the hardships I'd remembered as bittersweet had been fake. Poor little rich boy. How hard it must have been to fight homeless people for scraps just to test me.

"Serafina Carter. A poor girl from some backwater farm town down South, with six siblings. You're the only one who ever got out. I don't care where you come from, but don't you dare embarrass me. You couldn't survive the Taylor family's wrath."

His voice was still gentle, but there was a warning in his eyes.

Suddenly I felt like a joke. To keep him from despising me, I had given up everything. I had even risked my life to become the respectable public face of the Calvetti family.

And now he was using it to threaten me. He'd destroyed our love himself.

He brushed my cheek with his thumb. "Done throwing a fit? Let me take you to get those wounds looked at.

"If you don't behave, I'll leave you here, and you can walk the 120 miles back yourself."

I stared at him for a long time. My heart was surprisingly calm.

A man who put power above everything didn't deserve to spend his life with me.

I took a deep breath. "Fine."

Once we got back to town and I reached my people, it would be over between Melville and me.

After I was admitted to the local community hospital, I sent an encrypted email. "Put the plan to clear the way for Melville on hold. Tell the family I'm coming home."

The reply came quickly. "Got it. We'll take care of everything and come get you within three days."

Then a text arrived from Cecilia: a photo of her kissing Melville under the northern lights.

The message read, "So what if he loves you? For his family's sake, he'll never say no to me."

Suddenly I felt sick to my stomach.

We had waited so long to see this once-in-a-lifetime display of the northern lights. We'd saved for a whole year and planned the trip for three months, all so we could take the happiest photo of our lives beneath them.

Now those lights had witnessed our breakup.

I didn't reply. I tossed my phone aside and started packing.

Dewey was already on his way with our people. They'd be here in six hours. Whatever was between Melville and me ended here.

The next year, Roy and I got married. Our wedding of the century lit up Times Square's giant screens for 15 straight days. Before our honeymoon, I received a wedding gift with no name attached.I opened the box. Inside lay the pendant engraved with the Calvetti crest.I looked at it once and handed it to the butler. "Get rid of it."What belongs to the past should stay there.Meanwhile, at another cocktail party, Melville was making the rounds with members of the Taylor family, trying to drum up business.People used to compete for the chance to raise a glass with him. Now he was the one approaching people he used to look down on, drink in hand and an ingratiating smile on his face. Those who accepted a drink gave him only a cold look. One person even pushed the glass back. "Sorry, Mr. Taylor. I'll have to pass."A few muffled laughs rippled through the room. Face rigid, Melville had no choice but to swallow his pride and keep working the room.Someone brought up my wedding."Ms. Calve

Melville didn't give up.He tried everything he could think of to arrange chance encounters with me: exclusive dinner parties, the racetrack, private auctions. If he knew I would be there, he always arrived early. The last time, he bought a gemstone necklace worth a fortune at an auction and brought it to me himself.I gave it one glance, then dropped it in the trash right in front of him.Dewey stood off to the side and gave him a half-amused look. "You think junk like this is good enough for Ms. Calvetti?"Word spread fast in our circles. When Cecilia heard, she completely lost it.She brought in reporters from several media outlets, then went live and sobbed into the camera that I had stolen her fiancé. She also released an edited video from the auction, cutting out every shot of me throwing the necklace away. But the livestream had barely started when it suddenly cut out.Every nasty post about me vanished just as fast. What Cecilia didn't realize was that by coming after me in pub

When I returned to the Calvetti estate, my mother was waiting for me.She took one look at my wounds and had a doctor come dress them again. "Who did this?""The Taylor family. And the Ferguson family."She didn't ask anything else. She just turned and gave an order. "Handle it."I knew that once my mother made a move, those two families would never know another peaceful day.Once I'd stabilized, I took the reins of the Calvetti family business again and cut off every deal we had going with the Taylor family.Melville's company had grown fast over the last few years, and I had quietly arranged for my family to support several of its key projects.I had secured the funding, distribution channels, connections, and even several major partners for him.Now I was taking every bit of it back.On the third day, a guard came to report that Melville had been waiting outside the gate for six hours. My mother gave me a sharp look. "Do you want to see him?""No."Something like approval flickered

The moment he pushed open the door, he froze. The room was empty.None of Serafina's things were by the bed. All of her clothes were gone from the closet.Everything she usually left lying around on the table had been cleared away. All that was left was the itinerary they'd spent three months planning. The first item was their planned kiss beneath the northern lights, with Serafina in her wedding dress. Now a large X, drawn in red marker, slashed across the itinerary. The color drained from Melville's face. He ran into the bedroom, then the bathroom. He even checked the balcony. She wasn't anywhere. All his strength seemed to leave him. He staggered back, slammed into the corner of the table, and collapsed on the floor. "Serafina, where did you go?"He immediately sent his men to track her down, then went back to the hospital to comb through the security footage himself. The footage showed Serafina leaving the hospital and getting into a black Rolls-Royce. His only clue was a silver th

None of his messages got a reply, and Serafina didn't answer his calls.Melville shot to his feet and started pacing the room.He kept telling himself Serafina only needed some time alone to cool down and might come back in a little while. That reassurance lasted only until the shouts of children below drifted in through the window. He stopped dead. This wasn't the estate. The walls here weren't that thick.Cecilia had raised her voice on purpose, and Serafina must have heard every word, including the part about their arranged marriage.A chill shot up Melville's spine. He grabbed his phone and ran to the nurses' station. "Where's Serafina?"The nurse glanced at him and handed him a note. "She's been discharged. She asked me to give you this."Melville took the note. It read, "Melville, we're done."The note went on. "You were already promised to someone else, yet you kept pursuing me. You disgust me."His breath caught. She knew everything. The color drained from his face, and his fin

The harsh smell of hospital disinfectant woke me.Melville had kept watch beside my bed. The moment I opened my eyes, he pulled me into a tight embrace. "Thank God you're awake. The doctor said your heart is on the right side of your chest, so you're out of danger."He looked stricken with guilt. "I'm sorry. I never thought Cecilia would go that far. I regret it..."I cut him off. "Shoot her with a crossbow too, and I'll forgive you."Melville froze for a second, then flatly refused. "Babe, we've already settled on compensation. The Ferguson family agreed to hand over a month's worth of its Manhattan orders."He kissed my forehead. "Leave it all to me, okay? No more fighting. I owe you big for this one. I've wanted those orders for a long time. Whatever reward you want, it's yours. As long as you behave." My hands curled into fists. My chest ached. To him, my brush with death was just a bargaining chip, a way to squeeze out more profit.Once again, Melville had put profit before me.An
