Chapter 3

Autor: Apis Fortis
I packed everything connected to Melville into a bag and threw it in the dumpster. I was leaving with my suitcase when I ran straight into them.

Cecilia teased Melville. "Your little sweetheart sure has a temper."

Two or three people in the group snickered.

Melville's face darkened. "Serafina, don't keep testing my limits."

Cecilia lifted her chin. "Let me teach her some manners for you."

She raised her hand to slap me, but I twisted her arm behind her back and pinned her.

Cecilia cried out in pain and started shrieking. "How dare you lay a hand on me? The Ferguson family will make you pay for this!"

I couldn't have cared less. "Anytime."

Suddenly, someone yanked me backward by the shoulder so hard that I gasped in pain.

It was Melville. He pulled Cecilia behind him, disappointment written all over his face. "Serafina, how can you expect to marry into the Taylor family if this is how you act?"

I forced myself upright through the pain. "Melville, I wouldn't be your wife if you paid me!"

Watching him protect someone else while hurting me again, I finally understood. Maybe he did like me, but when it mattered, he would always protect whoever could benefit him more.

I turned to go, but Melville grabbed my wrist hard. His hand trembled slightly. "Where are you going?"

I yanked my arm free. "Let go of me, you filthy piece of trash!"

The last trace of color drained from his face. He quickly pulled off the pendant he wore against his skin. "Serafina, stop this. I'm cashing in the promise. You have to stay. Be good. All my friends are here, so don't embarrass me!"

For a second, I was somewhere else.

A traitor had left me with a leg injury that never fully healed. It ached every time it rained.

It had hurt Melville to see me in pain, so he'd secretly signed up for a drug trial with a pharmaceutical company and used the money to take me to a doctor.

His devotion moved me so much that I solemnly gave him the pendant engraved with my family's crest. "This is a promise. No matter what you do wrong or what you ask of me, you can trade this for one chance."

But of course a pampered Taylor would never actually be a lab rat. It had all been for show.

And I'd thought he'd use the pendant to propose. I never thought he'd waste his one chance just to save face.

I shook my head. "Melville, I don't honor promises I was tricked into."

A whistling sound split the quiet of the little town.

While I was distracted, a gleaming bolt shot straight at me and buried itself in my chest.

Pain exploded from the wound. Bright red blood soaked through my clothes and dripped into the snow, leaving dark red spots.

Cecilia didn't seem to have expected that either. Her grip on the crossbow went slack, the smugness drained from her face, and she took two dazed steps back.

My strength gave out, and I staggered backward.

"Serafina!" Melville lunged forward and caught me as I went limp.

"Doctor! Get a doctor!"

He held me tight and pressed down hard on the wound with shaking hands, but the blood kept welling up between his fingers until his hands and cuffs were red. "Stay awake, Serafina."

He turned to Cecilia, his voice ice-cold. "You hurt my fiancée. The Ferguson family will answer for this!

"If anything happens to Serafina, I'll make you pay."

Cecilia protested loudly. "I only meant to scare her into stopping! Somebody bumped me. That's why my aim was off!"

Through the dizziness, I heard Melville beg over and over. "God! Please don't do this to me. I can't lose Serafina!"

I felt warm tears falling on my face.

The next year, Roy and I got married. Our wedding of the century lit up Times Square's giant screens for 15 straight days. Before our honeymoon, I received a wedding gift with no name attached.I opened the box. Inside lay the pendant engraved with the Calvetti crest.I looked at it once and handed it to the butler. "Get rid of it."What belongs to the past should stay there.Meanwhile, at another cocktail party, Melville was making the rounds with members of the Taylor family, trying to drum up business.People used to compete for the chance to raise a glass with him. Now he was the one approaching people he used to look down on, drink in hand and an ingratiating smile on his face. Those who accepted a drink gave him only a cold look. One person even pushed the glass back. "Sorry, Mr. Taylor. I'll have to pass."A few muffled laughs rippled through the room. Face rigid, Melville had no choice but to swallow his pride and keep working the room.Someone brought up my wedding."Ms. Calve

Melville didn't give up.He tried everything he could think of to arrange chance encounters with me: exclusive dinner parties, the racetrack, private auctions. If he knew I would be there, he always arrived early. The last time, he bought a gemstone necklace worth a fortune at an auction and brought it to me himself.I gave it one glance, then dropped it in the trash right in front of him.Dewey stood off to the side and gave him a half-amused look. "You think junk like this is good enough for Ms. Calvetti?"Word spread fast in our circles. When Cecilia heard, she completely lost it.She brought in reporters from several media outlets, then went live and sobbed into the camera that I had stolen her fiancé. She also released an edited video from the auction, cutting out every shot of me throwing the necklace away. But the livestream had barely started when it suddenly cut out.Every nasty post about me vanished just as fast. What Cecilia didn't realize was that by coming after me in pub

When I returned to the Calvetti estate, my mother was waiting for me.She took one look at my wounds and had a doctor come dress them again. "Who did this?""The Taylor family. And the Ferguson family."She didn't ask anything else. She just turned and gave an order. "Handle it."I knew that once my mother made a move, those two families would never know another peaceful day.Once I'd stabilized, I took the reins of the Calvetti family business again and cut off every deal we had going with the Taylor family.Melville's company had grown fast over the last few years, and I had quietly arranged for my family to support several of its key projects.I had secured the funding, distribution channels, connections, and even several major partners for him.Now I was taking every bit of it back.On the third day, a guard came to report that Melville had been waiting outside the gate for six hours. My mother gave me a sharp look. "Do you want to see him?""No."Something like approval flickered

The moment he pushed open the door, he froze. The room was empty.None of Serafina's things were by the bed. All of her clothes were gone from the closet.Everything she usually left lying around on the table had been cleared away. All that was left was the itinerary they'd spent three months planning. The first item was their planned kiss beneath the northern lights, with Serafina in her wedding dress. Now a large X, drawn in red marker, slashed across the itinerary. The color drained from Melville's face. He ran into the bedroom, then the bathroom. He even checked the balcony. She wasn't anywhere. All his strength seemed to leave him. He staggered back, slammed into the corner of the table, and collapsed on the floor. "Serafina, where did you go?"He immediately sent his men to track her down, then went back to the hospital to comb through the security footage himself. The footage showed Serafina leaving the hospital and getting into a black Rolls-Royce. His only clue was a silver th

None of his messages got a reply, and Serafina didn't answer his calls.Melville shot to his feet and started pacing the room.He kept telling himself Serafina only needed some time alone to cool down and might come back in a little while. That reassurance lasted only until the shouts of children below drifted in through the window. He stopped dead. This wasn't the estate. The walls here weren't that thick.Cecilia had raised her voice on purpose, and Serafina must have heard every word, including the part about their arranged marriage.A chill shot up Melville's spine. He grabbed his phone and ran to the nurses' station. "Where's Serafina?"The nurse glanced at him and handed him a note. "She's been discharged. She asked me to give you this."Melville took the note. It read, "Melville, we're done."The note went on. "You were already promised to someone else, yet you kept pursuing me. You disgust me."His breath caught. She knew everything. The color drained from his face, and his fin

The harsh smell of hospital disinfectant woke me.Melville had kept watch beside my bed. The moment I opened my eyes, he pulled me into a tight embrace. "Thank God you're awake. The doctor said your heart is on the right side of your chest, so you're out of danger."He looked stricken with guilt. "I'm sorry. I never thought Cecilia would go that far. I regret it..."I cut him off. "Shoot her with a crossbow too, and I'll forgive you."Melville froze for a second, then flatly refused. "Babe, we've already settled on compensation. The Ferguson family agreed to hand over a month's worth of its Manhattan orders."He kissed my forehead. "Leave it all to me, okay? No more fighting. I owe you big for this one. I've wanted those orders for a long time. Whatever reward you want, it's yours. As long as you behave." My hands curled into fists. My chest ached. To him, my brush with death was just a bargaining chip, a way to squeeze out more profit.Once again, Melville had put profit before me.An
