Chapter 5

Author: Parasol
Frantic door knocks could be heard alongside the doorbell.

It was extremely anxiety-inducing.

“Who’s that? Why are you banging on our door?”

My mother put the cup aside and walked out.

My father suddenly seemed to recall something as he took out his phone.

With just a glance, his face went pale.

“Don’t open the door!”

However, as he spoke, the door cracked open.

One rough hand was holding the door open, and two people suddenly forced their way in.

Cold sweat broke out on my fath

My father teared up and dragged Jolie back into the bedroom and locked the door. I could hear his loud roars. “I’m going to kill you! How dare you do something like that? She’s your sister!”Jolie sobbed from the pain, yet she argued. “So what if you kill me? You won’t be able to bring Ruby back!“You didn’t like her in the first place. You’re always saying she’s a burden to our family. Why are you blaming it all on me now?” The belt dropped from my father’s hand. He suddenly recalled our birthday. Jolie had hugged him and said that she would not want to see me for the whole day. He had wrapped the metal wire around the closet door without any hesitation. The only thing he could remember was how relieved he had been to not need to take care of me for the entire day. My father’s legs gave out and hit his knees against the bedframe. “It’s my fault! This is all my fault!“I didn’t take care of Ruby, and I didn’t teach Jolie right!”I floated against the ceiling and

My mother felt that something was wrong, so she quickly asked. “Officer, what’s going on?“Is there something wrong with Ruby’s death?”Officer George nodded slowly after a long silence. “We found all these pills from Jolie’s bedroom.”My mother was stunned. Then, her hand that was holding the bag started to shake. I cocked my head as I looked at that bag of pills. Then, numerous familiar scenes appeared in my mind. I did not like to eat medicine, and my mother had no patience to coax me into eating them. She would place the pills on my table and then lock the door. However, after a while, Jolie would sneak in and exchange my bitter pill with a sweet candy. She said my mother had saved that candy for her. She felt sorry for me, which was why she was willing to give that to me. But why did Jolie not eat the medicine that she took from me?My mother whipped her head around and stared at Jolie as she curled up against a corner. She looked like this was the first tim

I pressed my hand softly against my chest. I felt a huge gaping hole there. It felt extremely cold. I thought I would no longer feel pain after I died. However, I was wrong again. My father slapped my mother and stopped her sobbing. His eyes were bloodshot as he panted. “Are you crazy?“Ruby’s in such a critical condition! Instead of going to the hospital, you’re spewing nonsense over here!” My mother’s head turned sideways from the impact. Suddenly, she shuddered as though she had woken up from a dream. “Right, hospital! Let’s go to the hospital!” My mother scrambled up from the floor and carried me in her arms with much difficulty. Then, she charged out. However, she had just reached the entrance when Helen and Peter stopped her. Peter crossed his arms as he peered at them. “Where are you going?“You must give me an explanation of what happened today.”Helen tried to catch a glimpse inside our house. Then, she saw Jolie, who was trembling as she curled

Cold sweat broke out on my father’s forehead. “Why are you here?”The two people smelled like a mixture of sweat and cigarette smoke. Jolie immediately covered her nose from the smell and hid behind my father. However, as she moved, she had caught the attention of the two people. “Yo, this must be Ruby, right? What a pretty girl!“We happened to have some errands to run in the city today, so we thought we could’ve just picked Ruby up on the way back. Then, you don’t have to make a trip.” That woman, Helen White, s

With a loud thud, my stiff body fell onto the floor directly without any support. My mother’s voice hitched. Initially, I thought they would be shocked or upset. Yet, all of them exchanged a glance and smiled helplessly. “She’s doing it again! She’s never getting sick of playing dead!” My mother kicked my body lightly. “Ruby, we’re rushing to the hospital today. It’s not the time to play this game.“Quick, get up. Don’t make me mad.” After saying that, my mother no longer glanced at me. She went out to pack my belongings for the hospital stay. My luggage was very simple. A few changes of clothes and a set of toiletries. It did not even take up a full backpack. As for the remaining items, my father had tossed all of them into the trash can. He said it was good to toss these items away, as they might bring bad luck from my past. Bad luck. I did not truly understand why they would use that phrase. However, they always said that whenever they mentioned my nam

Upon hearing that, my father rushed in immediately. Jolie was following behind him. I felt like two sides of my brain were fighting against each other. One was shouting for my mother to quickly open the closet. The other was crying for my mother not to, for the fear that I would return to my own body. Then, very soon, I would be sent to a stranger’s home. However, no one cared about my thoughts at all. The cake fell onto the floor from my mother’s hands. She threw herself at the closet. Before my father could retrieve the tools, she was tearing the metal wire apart with her bare hands. The metal wire was sharp, and it left cuts on her hands. However, she did not let go. “Ruby, Ruby, talk to me! Say something!” I floated next to her anxiously as her blood splattered on my face. My brain had quietened down. Only one voice was repeating nonstop“See, Mommy’s crying for you. “You shouldn’t have upset her and just went to the countryside, so you won’t be a b
