Chapter 2

مؤلف: Big Belly
It was 7 p.m. when the bus pulled into the station.

I dragged my suitcase to the homestay I had booked in advance.

The owner, Tom Smith, checked the computer for a long while, then looked up at me and said, “Um, your reservation got canceled this afternoon.”

I froze for a moment. “Canceled?”

“Yeah. Someone from your group said the plans changed, and you guys weren’t coming here anymore.”

I opened the group chat.

The last message was still the photo of Edmund at the salt lake this afternoon.

No one had mentioned that the plans had changed.

I called Eleanor.

She didn’t answer until my second call.

It was loud on her end. I could vaguely hear Edmund playing a drinking game with someone.

“You’ve reached the homestay?”

“Yeah. Where are you guys?”

“We’re at the next city over,” she said casually.

“We ran into some tourists this afternoon who said there’s a music festival there tonight, so we changed plans last minute.”

“Nobody bothered to tell me?” I gripped the handle of my suitcase.

She paused for a couple of seconds and said, “Did nobody tell you?”

Then, I heard Faye’s voice in the background. “I thought Lily told him.”

Lily immediately shot back, “I thought Eleanor told him.”

The three of them burst out laughing on the other end of the line.

This was not something new.

During our sophomore year, on New Year’s Eve, they changed restaurants at the last minute.

I stayed at the previously booked restaurant for forty minutes.

In the end, all they told me was that they thought I knew.

That time, I lost my temper, and they cajoled me with a meal.

After that, whenever it happened again, I stopped bothering to ask.

Eleanor said, “Just find yourself a place to stay tonight. We’ll come pick you up at 9 a.m.”

“Okay,” I said before hanging up.

Tom asked, “Will you and your friends still be staying here?”

I shook my head. “Do you have any other rooms for just one person?”

“Everything nearby is pretty much booked up today.”

In the end, I found a small motel in the old town.

There was no elevator, so I had to haul my suitcase up to the fourth floor.

The handle left a red mark across the web of my hand.

Just as I got into the room, a text popped up in the group chat.

Edmund posted a photo of a table full of barbecue.

[Too bad Everett isn’t here.]

Faye replied, [We’ll make it up to him tomorrow.]

Lily chimed in, [He’s not picky. He’ll eat anything.]

Eleanor sent a laughing-crying emoji.

I glanced at it, tossed my phone onto the table, and went to take a shower.

Right before bed, Eleanor finally sent me a text.

[Meet us at the front of the motel at 9 a.m. Don’t sleep in.]

I replied, [Okay.]

The next day at 8:40 a.m., I checked out.

At 9 a.m., no one showed up.

By 9:30 a.m., no one had shown up yet.

I sat on top of my suitcase and waited until 10:07 a.m.

Then, I called Eleanor.

She sounded as if she had just woken up.

“What’s up?”

“Weren’t you guys coming at 9 a.m.?”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

“Oh, we forgot.” She yawned.

“Edmund’s stomach was acting up last night. We were up until almost 3 a.m.”

“How’s he doing now?” I asked out of habit.

“Much better.”

After a pause, she added, “Oh, by the way, we’re not coming to pick you up.

“The place we’re going later is closer to our side. Just grab a ride over. We’d waste two extra hours driving there and back.”

Edmund spoke up from the side.

“Maybe we should just go pick him up. He’s been waiting forever.”

Faye said, “You’re just starting to feel better. Don’t put yourself through all that back-and-forth driving.”

Lily chimed in, “Everett can get here on his own.”

I stared at the traffic light across the street.

“Okay.”

Eleanor paused for a moment, then asked, “Are you upset?”

“No.”

“Alright then. Call us when you get here.”

The call ended.

I sat back down on my suitcase.

This time, I did not send my location to the group chat again.

Three months later, the company organized a short weekend road trip.Five people shared a seven-seater car. Before getting in, William Pierce, a coworker of mine, asked, “Where are you sitting?”I subconsciously walked toward the back row as I said, “I’m fine anywhere.”He looked confused.“Anywhere?“The front seat’s empty. Don’t you get carsick? Take it.”I stopped. “How’d you know I get carsick?”“Didn’t you say on the last work trip that looking at your phone on the highway makes you queasy?”He spun the car keys in his hand and continued, “Hurry and sit in the front.“Don’t puke in my car.”A few people nearby burst out laughing.I laughed, too.I sat down in the front passenger seat, and my phone lit up with a notification. It was a text from Edmund. It had been a while since I had heard from him.He had sent me the graduation photo. In it, Eleanor, Faye, Lily, and Edmund stood at the school gate. There was a small empty space in the middle.[We took graduatio

Eleanor did not come to my office to pester me again. But I still received texts from her every day.[It’s getting colder today. Make sure you dress warmly.][You get sick easily, too. Don’t eat too much takeout.][Text me back when you get a chance.]Those were the words I had desperately waited to hear in the past. But I did not even feel like replying. One Friday night, Lily called me.“Just give me five minutes.”“Hm.”For once, she got straight to the point.“Faye and I went back through our old chat history.“It’s… pretty embarrassing.”I kept quiet. She let out a self-mocking laugh.“Every time you said you wanted to go somewhere, we always said ‘next time.’“The second Edmund brought something up, we’d basically go that same day.“On your birthday, you wanted barbecue, and we ended up going to the pizza place he wanted.”I was caught off guard when she brought that up. I had almost forgotten about that. She continued, “I never really noticed it before.”“

A week later, the company held its first project presentation. At the last minute, the part I was responsible for was moved to the very beginning. Before I went on stage, the project lead, Lennon Willows, asked me, “Are you feeling nervous?”“I’m alright.”“Is this your first time?”“Yeah.”He handed me the laptop.“Just take your time.“It’s not like anyone’s going to bite your head off if you mess up.”I chuckled a little. The presentation went more smoothly than I had imagined. After it ended, Lennon tapped the table and said, “This looks like a good proposal.“Pulling this off in your first week is impressive for a new hire.”The people in the meeting room applauded. As I sat down, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Eleanor.[I’m downstairs at your office.]I glanced at the text for a few seconds, then went downstairs. She was standing outside the lobby.I had not seen her in a week. She looked like she had lost a lot of weight. She was holding a p

On the third night, Edmund called me.I hesitated for a few seconds, then picked up.It was very quiet on his end.“Everett?”“Yeah.”“Are you blaming me too?”“No.”He was silent for a moment.“The more you say no, the more uneasy I get.”I did not respond. After a while, he said, “The truth is, I’ve known it for a while now.”“What?”“They always take my side.”This time it was my turn to be silent.Edmund let out a low chuckle.“Back when we went out to eat, they always asked what I wanted first.“When we took photos, they always took mine first.“If I said I was tired, they’d stop so I could rest.“Sometimes I knew it wasn’t fair to you.”I asked, “Then, why didn’t you say anything?”The other end of the line was silent for a long time. Edmund said, “Honestly?“Having people always favor me feels pretty good.”That was very honest of him. He admitted it so plainly that I did not have it in me to be angry. He then added, “But I swear I never meant to take

The next afternoon, Ivan sent me a photo of the cardboard box that had been sitting by my desk.It was empty.[Eleanor came by to grab her stuff.]Then, he added, [She looked terrible.]I did not reply.A while later, he sent another text.[She asked when you were coming back. I told her you took a job out of town.][Then, she just stood there for a while without saying anything.]After reading it, I put my phone face down on the desk. The first week at the new company was busy.I picked up my badge, went through training, and familiarized myself with the project.Once I got busy, I could go an entire afternoon without thinking about them. After 9 p.m., Faye called me. “Everett?”“Yeah?”For the first time, she did not start off with a joke.“Did you actually break up with Eleanor?”“Yeah.”“Is it because of the trip?”“Something like that.”She sighed. “Okay, so you broke up with her. But why are you giving Lily and me the cold shoulder too? What’s that about?”M

When the plane landed, I turned my phone back on.Texts came flooding in.I had over a dozen missed calls from Eleanor.Faye and Lily had each called several times, too.The last text in the group chat was from Edmund.[Everett, where are you? Everyone’s been really worried.]I stared at his text for a couple of seconds. Then, I texted Ivan to let him know I had landed safely.Just as I put my phone down, Eleanor called again. I picked it up.“Everett, so you finally decided to pick up?”Her voice sounded tight and restrained.“Where are you?”“I just landed.”“I know you just landed. Which airport?”There was a pause before I answered, “Where my job is.”The other end of the line went quiet.“What job?”“I received an offer a while back.”“When did you get an offer?”“Two weeks ago.”She was clearly thrown off.“Wait, hold on a second.“You found a job two weeks ago, and it’s out of town?”“Yeah.”“Why didn’t you tell me?”Her question almost made me laugh.
