Chapter 3

مؤلف: Big Belly
Tom helped me find a ride.

Three hours later, I arrived at the scenic area.

The four of them were having lunch.

There were four sets of meals on the table.

Edmund was the first to notice me.

“Everett, you finally made it!”

Faye glanced down at the time.

“You took forever. Any later and we wouldn’t have had time to do anything this afternoon.”

I stood by the table and asked, “You didn’t order anything for me?”

The four of them froze at the same time.

Lily spoke first.

“I figured you ate on the way.”

Edmund quickly pushed his meal toward me. “Here, take mine. I barely touched it.”

Eleanor reached out and stopped him.

“You’re just starting to feel better. Eat your food.”

She then looked at me and said, “There’s a convenience store nearby. Grab something to tide you over.

“I’ll take you somewhere nice tonight.”

Back when she used to say she would make it up to me later, I could never stay mad at her for long.

I nodded. “Okay.”

The convenience store only had two cold sandwiches left.

I sat by the window and finished them.

By the time I came out, they were already urging me to hurry up.

In the afternoon, Edmund wanted to shoot a set of highway photos.

When he said the sun was too harsh, Eleanor took off her sunglasses and tossed them to him.

Lily crouched beside him, smoothing out his wrinkled pant leg.

The photographer, Kai Eastman, said with a smile, “Let’s get one with all five of you.”

The four of them instinctively stood together.

I walked over and stood at the very edge.

After the shot, Edmund pulled them over to look at the photos.

Eleanor turned back and said to me, “Everett, which one do you like?”

I was in the middle of replying to a work message on my phone.

“Either one’s fine.”

She shot me a sharp glance. “Why are you so out of it today?”

“I’m just tired from all the traveling.”

“Oh.”

Edmund called out to her. She quickly turned and walked off.

On my phone was a message from the company that had offered me a job two weeks ago.

The hiring manager, Ryan Sterling, had texted me.

[If you change your mind down the road, feel free to reach out again.]

I did not reply and just stared at it for a long time.

I just left the chat window running in the background.

That night, we arrived at a hotel in town.

The front desk told us that one family room and one king room were the only rooms left.

I thought it would be easy to sort that out.

Eleanor, Faye, and Lily could take the family room, and I could share the king room with Edmund.

Eleanor spoke up first.

“Let’s give Edmund the king room.”

I looked at her as she said, “He has been unwell for the past couple of days, and he hasn’t been sleeping well at night. Let him have a quiet room for himself.”

Edmund waved his hand. “No need. I can just share with Everett.”

Faye frowned. “You two grown men sharing one bed? How are you both supposed to sleep?”

Lily chimed in, “Don’t you have trouble sleeping in unfamiliar beds anyway? Stop making things complicated.”

Eleanor looked at me.

“Everett, isn’t there a motel nearby?

“It’s just a ten-minute walk. Just tough it out for one more night.”

I stared at her for a couple of seconds and said, “Okay.”

Even the front desk clerk was taken aback.

Edmund said awkwardly, “Maybe I should go instead.”

Eleanor had already passed the room key to him. “Don’t wear yourself out.”

She looked at me again. “Text us when you get there.”

I did not say anything else and dragged my suitcase outside.

Halfway there, it started to rain.

In the past, I would have texted the group chat and asked them to bring me an umbrella.

When I pulled out my phone, I saw that Edmund had just posted a photo of the room.

Eleanor was adjusting the air conditioner for him.

Faye was asking if the blanket was thick enough.

Lily was standing in front of the cabinet looking for the kettle.

I stared at it for a while, then turned off my screen.

I stood under the eaves waiting for the rain to let up, then kept walking.

There were a few stairs at the entrance of the motel.

A guy saw how heavy my suitcase was and helped me with it.

“Hey man, are you traveling alone?”

“I’m with my friends.”

He looked confused.

“Are they staying somewhere else?”

“Yeah.”

He glanced at me but did not ask anything more. Then, he tossed me a bottle of water he had just bought.

“Here, take it.”

At 11 p.m., I was lying in bed when I remembered I had not told them I had made it to the motel.

I picked up my phone, but I put it back down again.

The next morning, I checked the group chat.

There were no new messages in the group.

No one even bothered to ask if I had made it to the motel safely.

Three months later, the company organized a short weekend road trip.Five people shared a seven-seater car. Before getting in, William Pierce, a coworker of mine, asked, “Where are you sitting?”I subconsciously walked toward the back row as I said, “I’m fine anywhere.”He looked confused.“Anywhere?“The front seat’s empty. Don’t you get carsick? Take it.”I stopped. “How’d you know I get carsick?”“Didn’t you say on the last work trip that looking at your phone on the highway makes you queasy?”He spun the car keys in his hand and continued, “Hurry and sit in the front.“Don’t puke in my car.”A few people nearby burst out laughing.I laughed, too.I sat down in the front passenger seat, and my phone lit up with a notification. It was a text from Edmund. It had been a while since I had heard from him.He had sent me the graduation photo. In it, Eleanor, Faye, Lily, and Edmund stood at the school gate. There was a small empty space in the middle.[We took graduatio

Eleanor did not come to my office to pester me again. But I still received texts from her every day.[It’s getting colder today. Make sure you dress warmly.][You get sick easily, too. Don’t eat too much takeout.][Text me back when you get a chance.]Those were the words I had desperately waited to hear in the past. But I did not even feel like replying. One Friday night, Lily called me.“Just give me five minutes.”“Hm.”For once, she got straight to the point.“Faye and I went back through our old chat history.“It’s… pretty embarrassing.”I kept quiet. She let out a self-mocking laugh.“Every time you said you wanted to go somewhere, we always said ‘next time.’“The second Edmund brought something up, we’d basically go that same day.“On your birthday, you wanted barbecue, and we ended up going to the pizza place he wanted.”I was caught off guard when she brought that up. I had almost forgotten about that. She continued, “I never really noticed it before.”“

A week later, the company held its first project presentation. At the last minute, the part I was responsible for was moved to the very beginning. Before I went on stage, the project lead, Lennon Willows, asked me, “Are you feeling nervous?”“I’m alright.”“Is this your first time?”“Yeah.”He handed me the laptop.“Just take your time.“It’s not like anyone’s going to bite your head off if you mess up.”I chuckled a little. The presentation went more smoothly than I had imagined. After it ended, Lennon tapped the table and said, “This looks like a good proposal.“Pulling this off in your first week is impressive for a new hire.”The people in the meeting room applauded. As I sat down, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Eleanor.[I’m downstairs at your office.]I glanced at the text for a few seconds, then went downstairs. She was standing outside the lobby.I had not seen her in a week. She looked like she had lost a lot of weight. She was holding a p

On the third night, Edmund called me.I hesitated for a few seconds, then picked up.It was very quiet on his end.“Everett?”“Yeah.”“Are you blaming me too?”“No.”He was silent for a moment.“The more you say no, the more uneasy I get.”I did not respond. After a while, he said, “The truth is, I’ve known it for a while now.”“What?”“They always take my side.”This time it was my turn to be silent.Edmund let out a low chuckle.“Back when we went out to eat, they always asked what I wanted first.“When we took photos, they always took mine first.“If I said I was tired, they’d stop so I could rest.“Sometimes I knew it wasn’t fair to you.”I asked, “Then, why didn’t you say anything?”The other end of the line was silent for a long time. Edmund said, “Honestly?“Having people always favor me feels pretty good.”That was very honest of him. He admitted it so plainly that I did not have it in me to be angry. He then added, “But I swear I never meant to take

The next afternoon, Ivan sent me a photo of the cardboard box that had been sitting by my desk.It was empty.[Eleanor came by to grab her stuff.]Then, he added, [She looked terrible.]I did not reply.A while later, he sent another text.[She asked when you were coming back. I told her you took a job out of town.][Then, she just stood there for a while without saying anything.]After reading it, I put my phone face down on the desk. The first week at the new company was busy.I picked up my badge, went through training, and familiarized myself with the project.Once I got busy, I could go an entire afternoon without thinking about them. After 9 p.m., Faye called me. “Everett?”“Yeah?”For the first time, she did not start off with a joke.“Did you actually break up with Eleanor?”“Yeah.”“Is it because of the trip?”“Something like that.”She sighed. “Okay, so you broke up with her. But why are you giving Lily and me the cold shoulder too? What’s that about?”M

When the plane landed, I turned my phone back on.Texts came flooding in.I had over a dozen missed calls from Eleanor.Faye and Lily had each called several times, too.The last text in the group chat was from Edmund.[Everett, where are you? Everyone’s been really worried.]I stared at his text for a couple of seconds. Then, I texted Ivan to let him know I had landed safely.Just as I put my phone down, Eleanor called again. I picked it up.“Everett, so you finally decided to pick up?”Her voice sounded tight and restrained.“Where are you?”“I just landed.”“I know you just landed. Which airport?”There was a pause before I answered, “Where my job is.”The other end of the line went quiet.“What job?”“I received an offer a while back.”“When did you get an offer?”“Two weeks ago.”She was clearly thrown off.“Wait, hold on a second.“You found a job two weeks ago, and it’s out of town?”“Yeah.”“Why didn’t you tell me?”Her question almost made me laugh.
