I watched the thermal feed until my eyes burned.

I had seen hordes before. In my first life, I saw them every night from the cracks in the walls where I hid. They came like a flood. Pushing. Shoving. Tripping over each other. Climbing over their own fallen bodies to get to the smell of warm blood.

There was no order to them. No pattern. Just hunger.

This was nothing like that.

The infected moved in small groups. Six or seven in each one. Every group was the same distance from the next, like som

Fur rippled up Nikolai's arm.Dark and thick, spreading from his wrist to his elbow. Then past his elbow, to his shoulder. His spine arched up off the airlock floor. A low, terrible growl rumbled out of his chest.I knew this wasn't a shift he chose. When he carried me across the frozen river, the change was smooth and quiet. Easy. Like taking off a coat. This wasn't that. This was being torn out of him. Pulled. Dragged out by force. And the yellow gas curling along the ceiling was doing the pulling.I looked up. The ribbons of yellow were getting thicker. Sinking lower. Spreading into every corner of the small room.I had seconds. If I didn't stop this, the airlock would become a cage. And inside it would be a half-changed wolf with no mind left. A wolf who wouldn't know my face. Who wouldn't know my name. Who wouldn't know anything except pain....I jumped up and slammed my palm flat against the air vent in the wall."Absorb!"I pulled. The same way I pulled the sound from Castor's

I didn't wait for the trucks to finish whatever they were doing. On the ridge, their back doors were swinging open. Shapes were moving inside. Men, maybe. Or something worse. I didn't stay to find out.I wrapped one arm tight around Nikolai's chest and pulled him up out of the snow. He was so heavy. His legs folded under him like wet paper."Get up," I told him. "Get up, get up, get up."He tried. His feet scraped the snow. He leaned against me, half standing."System!" I screamed. "Cover us! Fire! Fire everything!"I didn't care about the fourteen guns anymore. If they wanted to shoot me, they could try.The turrets on the roof roared.A wall of blue light burst out of the fortress and slammed into the rows of infected nearest the gate. Bodies flew backward through the air like dolls. They hit the snow and rolled. But the others didn't run. They didn't scatter. They didn't scream. They just stepped forward and filled the empty spaces. Closed the gaps. Like nothing had happened. Like

I didn't stop to think. There was no time for thinking.I grabbed a thermal coat off the rack beside the airlock and pulled it over my head as I ran. My arms tangled in the sleeves. I didn't care. At the same time, I reached into my storage space and pulled out Nikolai's heavy parka. The thick black one with the fur hood. I tucked it under my arm. Then I ran through the inner door. The cold hit me like a wall.It wasn't like normal cold. It wasn't like a winter morning or a snowy day. It was a living thing. It wrapped around me and squeezed. It bit into every inch of skin that wasn't covered.Eighty-four below zero.My first breath burned all the way down. Like I was breathing in fire instead of air. The wetness on my eyelashes froze in seconds. I blinked, and they stuck together. I had to rub them apart with my glove.I knew this cold. I had died in this cold.I had maybe four minutes. Maybe less. After that, my fingers would stop working. Then my hands. Then my legs.Four minutes.T

I didn't answer Elese right away.I took my finger off the intercom button and turned to Nikolai."Can you give me a minute?" I asked. "Alone."He looked at me.It was a long look. Different from the way he usually looked at me. For the first time since he found that badge on Castor's chest, his golden eyes narrowed a little. Like he could see exactly what I was doing.Like he knew I was managing him.Keeping things from him. Deciding what he was allowed to hear.My chest tightened. But I didn't take it back.He didn't argue. He just nodded once, set the test strips down on the counter, and walked out.His boots echoed down the steel corridor. Step. Step. Step. Getting quieter. And quieter.I waited until I couldn't hear them anymore. Then I pressed the intercom button."I'm not making you any promises," I said. "You talk. I listen. Then I decide what to do with what you tell me."Silence.Nothing came through the speaker. Not a breath. Not a sound. The silence went on so long that I

I walked out of the airlock with Eris's words still ringing in my ears.*He was waiting for something to be born.*But I didn't let it show on my face. Not one bit. If anyone was watching me through the cameras, all they would see was a woman walking down a hallway.I kept my steps even. Slow and steady. Left, right. Left, right.I checked the sealed rooms one by one as I passed them.Bay C. Locked. Quiet. Castor's body still inside.Bay D. Locked. The little girl still humming in the corner. The medical wing. The father still asleep on the gurney.Everything was where it should be. Everything was locked tight. Then I heard it.Pounding.Loud and frantic, from the storage room at the end of the hall. The room where I had locked Elese.Bang. Bang. Bang.I stopped....The vents in my fortress connected almost every room. I knew that. I designed it that way, so the warm air could reach everywhere.Which meant Elese had heard everything too.I walked to the storage room door and slid ope

I didn't go to Eris right away. I wanted to. Every part of me wanted to march down that hallway and make her explain every word she just said. But I made myself wait. First, I checked the father's cuffs. I pulled on each one to make sure they were tight. He lay still on the gurney with his eyes closed. His chest rose and fell, slow and even. Asleep, or close to it. Then I checked the screen for Bay D. The little girl sat in the corner of the gray room, wrapped in her silver blanket. Still humming. The door was sealed. The lock was green. Then I turned to Nikolai. "Go lie down," I said. "Boss, I can..." "Go lie down. That's an order." He looked at me for a long moment. Then he nodded and walked slowly toward the couch in the control room. Only then did I go. I walked down the long hallway toward the airlock. Slowly. One step at a time. I let my boots hit the steel floor hard, so every footstep echoed off the walls. I wanted Eris to hear me coming. I wanted her to count eve
