Chapter 3: The Breaking Point

The next morning, I woke up to my phone buzzing on the nightstand. Three missed calls from my manager at work.

I sat up, rubbing my face. Eleanor had really done it. she’d pulled strings to have me put on leave without my consent.

Adrian’s side of the bed was cold again. He was already downstairs, probably sipping coffee while his mother handed him his afternoon schedule.

I got dressed in a gray trousers-and-blouse combo, bypassed the main breakfast table entirely, and walked straight down to the garage.

Eleanor was standing near the entryway, talking to the head housekeeper. She raised an eyebrow as I walked past. “Where are you going? The driver is scheduled to take us to the caterers at eleven.”

“I have things to settle at my office,” I said without stopping.

“Emma, we discussed this.”

“You discussed it,” I corrected her, turning at the glass doors. “I didn't.”

She looked genuinely shocked that I was walking out, but I didn't care anymore. I took my own car, the old sedan I’d parked in the back driveway and drove straight downtown.

My office building felt like a different world. My coworker, Sarah, pulled me into a breakroom the moment I walked through the door.

“Emma, what’s going on? HR said you submitted a formal resignation yesterday.”

“I didn't,” I said flatly. “Eleanor Hartwell did.”

Sarah stared at me. “Can she even do that?”

“In this city? Yeah, apparently she can.” I took a deep breath, looking around at the messy desks, the half-empty coffee mugs, the chaotic bulletin boards. It was plain, simple, and entirely mine.

I spent two hours speaking with my manager, clearing up the mess. They couldn't hold my spot forever, but they agreed not to process the termination paperwork yet. It was a tiny win, but sitting in that office gave me my head back.

When I got back to the mansion around three, Adrian’s car was already in the driveway.

I found him in the study, pacing back and forth with a glass of scotch in his hand. Eleanor was sitting on the leather sofa, looking completely composed.

“Where were you?” Adrian asked the second I walked in. He looked stressed out, his tie half-undone.

“At my office,” I said, closing the door behind me. “Clearing up the 'resignation' your mother tried to file for me.”

Adrian looked at Eleanor, then back at me. “Emma, Mom was just trying to clear your slate so you wouldn't be overwhelmed.”

“Stop covering for her, Adrian!” I finally snapped, my voice ringing off the wood paneling. “She went behind my back to destroy my job. And you knew about it!”

Eleanor stood up slowly. “Lower your tone in this house, Emma.”

“This isn't a house,” I said, looking her dead in the eye. “It’s a cage. And your son is too terrified of losing his inheritance to admit it.”

Adrian’s face went white. “Emma, that’s enough.”

“No, it’s not,” I said. “I’m going upstairs to pack a bag. I’m staying at my apartment tonight.”

“You’re not going anywhere,” Eleanor said calmly. “If you walk out that door today, the press will have a field day. The Hartwell Group is closing a merger this Friday, and we will not have a family scandal ruining it.”

I looked at Adrian. “Are you going to say anything?”

He looked down at his glass, then at his mother, and finally at me. “Emma... just stay until Friday. After the merger dinner, we’ll talk. We’ll figure out the apartment. I promise.”

I stared at him for a long moment. The silence in the room was deafening.

“You really can’t do it, can you?” I said softly. “You can’t make a single choice on your own.”

I turned around, walked out of the study, and went upstairs to lock the door behind me.

The rain was lukewarm, heavy, and smelled like asphalt.By the time the cab pulled up to my building, my hair was plastered to my forehead, and my clothes were soaked through. I didn't care about the cold. I didn't care about the rain. My mind was pinned to the image of Richard Hartwell’s face in the back of that black SUV, illuminated by the cold blue light of his iPad.When the taxi stopped, the headlights cut through the downpour, illuminating the sidewalk.Four oversized, black trash bags sat slumped against the concrete curb, right beside a puddle of brown, murky water. Next to them was my small duffel bag, already heavy and waterlogged.I stepped out of the cab. My shoes squelched against the wet pavement.I knelt by the trash bags with numb fingers, pulling open the ties of the top one. Inside were my sweaters, my work dresses, my winter coat, all crammed together without care. The bottom of the second bag had split open, and a framed photograph from my college graduation was s

I didn't cancel dinner. I let him pick me up.When I slid into his car at six, the smell of his expensive cologne mixed with the faint scent of leather and rain. He leaned over, his eyes soft, and kissed me on the cheek.“You look exhausted, sweetheart,” he said, his hand lingering on my neck, thumb rubbing a soft, comforting circle against my skin. “Tonight is about us. No phone calls. No business.”I sat there, frozen, feeling his warm thumb on my neck while my skin crawled. Every touch felt like a lie. Every gentle word felt like a drop of poison. The restaurant was a quiet, dimly lit place downtown with white linen tablecloths, soft jazz playing in the background, and waiters in suits who moved like shadows. Adrian had booked a corner booth, private, intimate, surrounded by small tea candles flickering in crystal glass. He took my hand across the table the moment we sat down.“To us,” he said, raising his wine glass with a bright, victorious smile. “To finally leaving the noise be

My thumb hovered over the screen, cold sweat slicking my skin as I scrolled down to page twelve of the digital document. At the very bottom, beneath the heavy legal boilerplate, sat the tiny font of the drafting metadata.*Document Author: R. The man who had sat at the end of the breakfast table softly telling me not to let Eleanor get to me, pretending to be the gentle, henpecked husband shaking his head in the corner. I didn't take the sedan. I walked past the iron gates and kept walking until my heels dug red marks into the backs of my ankles, only stopping when a yellow cab finally pulled over on the avenue.By midnight, the silence in my apartment felt loud enough to ring in my ears.I didn't pack a bag. I didn't cry into a pillow. Instead, I sat on the edge of the unmade bed, watching the digital clock on the nightstand flip from 1:14 to 1:15 to 1:16.At 1:42 a.m., key metal scraped against the deadbolt. The door swung open, and Adrian stepped into the foyer. He looked wrecked. His tie was stuffed into his jacket pocket, his dark hair was disheveled, and he smelled faintly of rain and expensive whiskey. He stopped when he saw me sitting there in the dark, my purse still resting on my lap.“Emma,” he breathed, taking a step forward. “Thank God you’re here. I called you ten times.”“I muted my phone,” I said, my voice empty. He closed the distance between us, sinking to his knees on the rug in fr

For three days, I allowed myself to believe that the lock on the Hartwell mansion’s oak doors had finally clicked shut behind us for good. The apartment smelled like fresh paint and cheap roast coffee. Adrian had spent Saturday morning moving his remaining suits out of the estate. He had come home with dust on his jaw, looking exhausted but fiercely relieved. When he wrapped his arms around my waist in our small kitchen that evening, resting his chin on my shoulder while I stirred pasta sauce, the tight coil in my chest had finally loosened. He was changing. He was actually standing up to her.By Tuesday afternoon, the quiet stability felt almost comfortable. Sitting at my desk at the office, I was finally catching up on two weeks of backlogged financial statements. My manager had stopped looking at me like I was a flight risk, and Sarah had ceased her daily wellness checks. At 4:15 p.m., my phone chimed on the desk pad.It was Adrian.*Are you still at your desk? I’m picking you up a

I stared at the screen until the display dimmed in my hand.*Ask her about Victoria Whitmore.*For several seconds, I didn't move. The parking lot was almost empty, the cool evening air settling over the dash while the mansion sat behind me, imposing, pristine, and completely unwelcoming. My fingers typed out a quick reply: *Who are you?*Nothing.I sent a second: *What do you know about my husband?*The three typing dots flickered on, hesitated, and vanished. No answer came.I dropped the phone onto the passenger seat and started the engine. Part of me wanted to write it off as another one of Eleanor’s head games, but Eleanor didn't operate from behind an anonymous number. She didn't need to hide; she was used to issuing demands in plain view.It was the specific mention of Victoria that made my stomach drop.I drove home slowly, replaying Eleanor’s parting words in her study: *Let’s see how long that lasts.*Telling Adrian right away felt like a mistake.
