Chapter 3

Author: Stars
Halfway through the banquet, Adrian's face changed. Vanessa had opened the mind-link. I couldn't hear what she said, but I saw the panic flash across his face.

"Selene, Vanessa's not feeling well, I have to get to the hospital—"

"Go. I'll get myself home."

I cut him off before he could finish the polite excuse he'd already prepared.

He blinked. "Sorry. Thanks for being my date. I'll send the payment to your account."

I nodded. He apologized one more time and walked out without looking back.

Once he was gone, the alcohol seemed to lift a little. I let out a slow breath.

Why?

I'd known he didn't love me. So why did my chest still feel like it had been split open?

Why bring me into this world at all? Was I only here to be a copy of my sister?

I gathered up my dress and walked. Half an hour, in heels, before I finally flagged down a cab. By then my feet were ribboned with blisters.

First thing in the morning, I went to the pack registry office and filed paperwork to leave the pack.

The clerk frowned over my application. "Selene, your family is here. Your job is here. Why pack up so suddenly?"

I held his gaze. "I'm resigning soon. I'm taking a position in another pack. I'll likely settle there."

He sighed. It was a personal decision and there was nothing he could do but respect it. "Does the Alpha know?"

I made a fist. "Yes."

He nodded. "Once the Alpha signs off, you're good to go."

I took the form back. My heart was pounding. "Thank you."

Walking out of the office, I felt lighter than I had in years.

Soon I'd be free of Vanessa's shadow. Free of Adrian. Free of that suffocating house.

Adrian didn't care about me. He wouldn't care that I was leaving either. All I needed was his signature.

I went back to the office. Adrian was the first person I saw.

He started when he spotted me. "Sorry. The other night was such a mess.I never got you home."

"It's fine," I said, calmly, already calculating how to get him to sign the form.

He didn't seem reassured. His brow drew tighter.

I held out the resignation letter and the separation form together. "I need you to sign this, please."

He took them. Before he could read a word, a bright voice rang out behind him. "Adrian!"

Vanessa came skipping over. The smile faltered when she saw me, then snapped back into place.

"Looks like the two of you had a very nice night. So cozy already."

The words landed like a stone in a pond. Every employee within earshot turned to look.

Adrian tapped her forehead. "Don't talk like that. You're supposed to be resting at the hospital. What are you doing here?"

She tugged at his sleeve, pouting. "Oh, am I in the way? Fine, I'll go. Don't bother looking for me later."

She turned on her heel and stormed off in those little leather shoes.

"Hey."

Adrian started after her. He still had my paperwork in his hand. He didn't even look at it. He scrawled his name across the bottom and ran after her.

I picked up the form. I tucked his signature carefully away.

Just as I'd expected. Adrian didn't care about me, so why would me leaving matter to him?

To him, I was an employee. Vanessa's sister. That was all. Someone like that could disappear overnight and no one would notice.

I packed up the research I'd written. Every paper, every notebook on healing I'd kept since university. Years of work. The only thing I had to my name.

I went home. The house was empty.

I ate something quickly and went to my room to pack. I might never come back. I wanted to take everything I could.

Then I found the wolf-fang necklace under the couch.

I froze. Childhood memories came back in pieces, like a broken mirror catching the light.

When I was ten, I'd found a small, dirty boy in my grandmother's orchard. He'd looked starved. Huddled under an apple tree, devouring fruit by the handful.

I gave him my lunch. I gave him every coin I had.

He gave me a necklace made from one of his fangs.

The necklace had vanished a few years later. The boy's face had blurred with time.

I thought about it for a moment. Then I tucked the necklace into my bag.

I had almost finished packing when I heard the front door unlock.

I had assumed that once Adrian agreed to the mating ceremony, Vanessa would have what she wanted, and they would finally leave me alone. The next morning he was at my door.He was sitting on my front step, looking exhausted."Adrian?" I frowned at him.He stood up slowly and held my eyes. "I'm doing the mating ceremony with Vanessa."He searched my face for a flicker of any kind. Anything. What he saw was relief. "Congratulations."It didn't feel like the kind of news that deserved congratulations to him. "I don't love her. But she's pregnant. I don't know if the child will make it, but I have a responsibility—"He didn't know how things had gotten this far either. It had all started with that one cursed heat. One wrong step, then another, and another, until there was no way back.He looked at me, his voice low. "Vanessa won't last long. After she's gone. Is there any chance for us?"Funny. In my last life, I spent twenty years with him. What I got at the end of it was: If only Vanessa

My father chimed in. "Selene, you're being so unreasonable. Your sister is dying, and you're still trying to take a man from her."My grip on the doorframe went white at the knuckles.I wasn't going to argue with these people. "If you don't leave, I'm calling the guards."I slammed the door.I had nearly enough evidence. All I needed now was the right moment to release it.When the buzz around Cassandra started to fade, my mother dropped her edited clip. The same second, I hit send on mine.Vanessa watched the wave of hate pour in for me again, and smiled."An Alpha's got your back. So what? She can shield you for a day. She can't shield you forever."Then the tide turned. The further down she scrolled, the darker her face got.[Wait. Isn't that witchcraft? Sacrificing one daughter to save another? What kind of mother does that?][If she knows she's dying, she should be focusing on treatment, not stealing her sister's man!]I had posted everything. Every conversation, every audio clip

The next morning at the hospital, something was off. My coworkers gave me strange looks. As I walked past, I caught the whispers."Is that her? She always seemed so kind. Who knew?""Wishing your own sister dead. You wouldn't say that to your worst enemy."I pulled out my phone. The first headline that came up: [HEAD HEALER CURSES OWN DYING SISTER STRAIGHT TO HELL!]The video showed a woman on her knees, sobbing, begging me for forgiveness. The clip ended on me: "You should've gone to hell long ago."I got it instantly. Vanessa had cut everything she'd said to provoke me, and left only my one moment of anger.I had a public profile in this pack. As Head Healer, the moment that clip went up, the views started piling on.The comments were brutal. Someone had already dug up the name of my hospital. By the time I checked, there were people outside the front entrance, holding signs. It started affecting hospital operations. Under public pressure, the director sent me home for a few days.Th

Deep in the woods, in the witch's house, Vanessa was running out of time. The witch came over to examine her and shook her head. "Your condition has worsened, and that potion forced a mate bond on top of it. If we don't get the sacrifice here soon, you have less than a month."That was when Vanessa actually started to panic. She lurched up and grabbed the witch by the collar. "You gave me that potion. Why is it making me worse?"The witch looked at her, unfazed. "You came to me wanting a fake-mark potion. I gave it to you. You didn't ask about side effects."That night in the forest, Adrian had held on to just enough of himself to refuse to mark her.Vanessa had no other play. She drank the potion and forged a mark of her own, becoming his fake mate. Now she was furious and frantic. She rounded on her mother. "He won't even talk to me anymore. What do I do? I'm not ready to die! Think of something."Her mother held her hand. "Sweetheart, calm down. Selene has guards on her constantly.

The days at Cassandra's place were quiet. Adrian had been telling the truth about that part, at least. My parents didn't call once.I thought a few days of laying low would be enough, and I'd be back at work soon.Until I picked up my phone the moment I woke up and a photo took up the whole screen. Two people, mostly bare, tangled together. Marks across the skin that left no question what had happened. The angle made it obvious. Vanessa had taken it.A second message followed:Vanessa: [Adrian's already marked me. What exactly are you fighting for?]The picture didn't move me at all. My fingers tapped out a reply:Selene: [Marking, in your condition. You really do have a death wish.]Then I blocked her.I had never been competing with her. She was the one who'd decided I was an enemy. Jealousy was her own weapon, pointed inward, and it was going to kill her.A week went by. I went back to work.Cassandra came barreling into my office and slapped a signed contract down on my desk. She g

I ran through the trees until I saw lights flickering in the distance, just before nightfall.I let out a long breath and dropped to the ground, completely spent. My mother knew where I lived. My mother knew where I worked. What was I supposed to do now? Then I thought of someone. I opened a mind-link and gave her the bare bones.Half an hour later, a black sedan pulled up in front of me. Cassandra rolled down the window. "Don't panic. Get in. We'll figure this out."I had barely settled into the passenger seat when my phone started lighting up. Adrian. Message after message.Adrian: [Selene. I'm sorry. I never wanted you hurt.]Adrian: [I thought they only wanted to see you.]Adrian: [I've already warned them.
