Chapter 7

Autor: Daphne
The whip wounds on Celine's back had not yet scabbed over when the North American Moon Council announced that she had won the art competition.

Her Migration Chart of the Thirteen Moonwells of the North had taken first prize. The notice stated clearly that the original artist had to appear at the Council hall in person for sigil registration, and the prize was enough to keep her on Greytide Island for half a year.

For the first time in ten years, an institution with authority had recognized that her maps were more than "useless paper."

She pressed the fog cloak down into the tidesalt case, meaning to go straight to the Tide Gate after the ceremony. But Cassandra heard the news and insisted the whole family come along.

"Celine's honor is Redridge's honor too." She took Delia's arm, and her smile looked sincere. "I could miss anything but my sister's most important day."

Celine did not object. She wanted to know why Cassandra had suddenly turned generous.

Moon maps from every territory hung in the Council hall. Celine's work occupied the center, its tides, star positions, and moonwell scents picked out in layers of silver thread. The announcer stepped onto the platform and unrolled the award scroll.

"First prize this year, Migration Chart of the Thirteen Moonwells of the North. The artist is the Redridge heir, Cassandra Vail."

Applause filled the hall.

Celine thought she had misheard. Only when Cassandra let go of her hand, lifted her skirt, and climbed onto the platform did she see that the sigil in the lower right corner of the map, the one that belonged to her, had been covered over with a pink-silver mark.

"What's going on?" she asked Gavin.

Gavin avoided her gaze. "Cassandra has never won an art prize. She only wanted to know what it felt like once. The map still carries the Vail name, and the prize money goes into the pack account."

"You changed the signature."

"I used Father's deputy seal. Do not call it theft. It's only one map."

Delia tried to soothe her in a low voice. "There are too many Alphas here today. Do not humiliate your sister in front of them. You can always paint another map."

Warren did not even turn around. "You don't contribute anything else anyway. At least this makes Cassandra look good."

The same people who had dismissed her work as worthless were now stealing it.

Nothing she did mattered to them. Only which daughter received the credit.

And despite everything, the betrayal still cut deep.

She had believed being reborn had emptied their cruelty of its power. She had believed she had stopped hoping for anything from them. But facing it again still sent grief crashing through her.

Rafe came to her side. After one searching glance, he laid a hand on her shoulder and rubbed his thumb along her collarbone. His voice dropped, soft and coaxing. "I know this hurts. Can you let it go for now? The ceremony has already begun, and everyone is watching."

He bent until they were eye to eye, as he once had when coaxing a frozen paintbrush from her hand in the snow. "When this is over, I'll get the prize money back. Every coin will be yours. I'll add more from the Blackwood accounts—enough for all the paints and paper you could ever want."

"Do this for me, little wolf," he said. "Do not make a scene right now."

Celine looked into his eyes. He had been sitting right there while she painted that map. She had traced the tide lines with frostbitten fingers, and he had changed the dressings on them himself. He knew it was hers.

And still he said bear it. Still he said he would make it up to her afterward.

She laughed suddenly.

"You want me to swallow the humiliation so you can buy it off later. To you, the years I worked, my talent, everything they have taken from me—it can all be settled with another gift."

Rafe frowned. "That's not what I meant..."

"Yes, it is."

She did not storm the platform or demand that the announcer stop. The sigil archive preserved the first mark laid on every work. Cassandra could steal the applause; she could not steal the evidence.

Back at Redridge, Celine opened her room and carried everything she had not yet packed to Cassandra's door: old hunting clothes, unsigned studies, Rafe's trinkets, and every leftover her family had handed her over the years.

Cassandra stood at the end of the corridor, and for once there was no smile on her face. "What's this supposed to mean?"

"You like my things, don't you?" Celine shoved the last crate over. "Take them all."

"I borrowed the credit once. Why do you insist on believing the worst of me?"

"Because what you wanted was never the prize." Celine looked at her. "You wanted me to watch with my own eyes while they let you take everything I have."

Something shifted in Cassandra's expression.

Celine did not wait for another lie. She turned and locked the empty room.

One last night until the Tide Gate opened.

There was nothing left in that room worth looking back for.

Rafe lay unconscious in the healing house for seven days.Warren had suffered damage to his shoulder core. Delia had injured her essence by forcing out the soothing scent. Gavin's right arm would never shift again. Once a day, Celine reviewed their records with the physicians and changed their dressings when needed. She did not use her wolf soul.On the eighth day, when Warren could sit up, the first thing he said was, "You're still willing to look after us. Does that not mean..."He did not finish it."It means you saved me in the gallery, and I'm willing to care for the injured." Celine returned the medicine bottle to the table. "It doesn't mean I've forgiven what you stole from my childhood, the forced drainings, or the whipping at the Ancestral Fire."Delia lay in the next bed, tears spilling at once. "We don't expect you to erase it all. Could we keep even a little contact? Once a year would be enough.""No.""Celine, I'm your mother.""That's exactly why the past weighs more, not

When the solstice moon came again, the Ashfords held Celine's first solo moon-map exhibition. The exhibition was called The First Howl of Freedom. No family history appeared at the entrance—only Celine's name. Migration Chart of the Thirteen Moonwells of the North hung at the center, its restored original sigil clear beneath the lights.Mara gave her wolfberry-free paints, while Edmund placed the Lone Wolf Navigation Project's hundredth safety deed in a display case. Callum planned no surprise. Before the doors opened, he simply asked, "Do you want me beside you all day, or would you rather have some space?""Stay with me."So he stood at her side.An hour after the exhibition opened, the Vails and Rafe came in on the public invitation. They did not cross the guest line and they released no private scent.Delia brought a case full of gifts. "These are what I owed you on every birth moon. I know it can't be made up. I only want you to take them."Celine did not open the case. "Gifts giv

Celine signed her name at the end of the mate pact. The sigil did not take effect at once. Through a remote moon seal, the clerk asked both of them again whether they were acting freely, whether they understood how to withdraw, and whether they were willing to form a mate bond without sharing control of each other's talents.Callum answered first. "I am."Celine held the pen and saw that Rafe was still standing at the garden entrance."I am," she said. Two kinds of moonlight met across the contract, but no mark of ownership formed. Callum's scent stopped at the edge of her awareness and waited. Celine stepped closer and took his hand. Only then did silver resonance illuminate their palms. The warmth did not burrow into her wolf soul or lock her wolf form. It told her only one thing: another person was here.Rafe closed his eyes."I'll wait for you," he said. "However long it takes."Celine let go of Callum's hand and turned to him. "Do not wait."Rafe went still."If waiting means you

Cassandra was caught on an abandoned highway thirty miles from the mine. The Moon Council tried Cassandra publicly for hiring Silverclaw poachers, attempted murder with wolfsbane, falsifying succession records, and awakening a forbidden wolf vein. The Vails did not ask the pack to handle the matter internally. They surrendered the Redridge ledgers and admitted that Alpha authority had been used to conceal evidence.Celine did not attend. When the clerk asked for her position on sentencing, Celine requested only two protections. "She must never again act under a Redridge identity, and she must never be allowed near another wolf-soul carrier."The court remanded Cassandra to eclipse prison. The cross-territory damage caused by the forbidden wolf vein required a second review, but she would remain in custody until final judgment. Celine closed the trial record and returned to her lone-wolf route map.Once he had recovered, Callum took her to the moon-map garden behind the castle. There we

When Celine woke, she was lying in a rescue tent outside the mine. The silverthorn wounds had been treated. Her wolf soul was weak, but it had not run dry again. The healer explained that when the vein burst, everyone had shielded Celine at the center. She had suffered the least.Callum, Mara, and Edmund were still behind the stone doors of the operating chamber.Eclipse burns had penetrated their core essence, and ordinary medicine could not remove them. Celine gripped the bed frame and stood. "Use my wolf soul."The healer stopped her. "It's incompatible. Your essence comes from a tidal moonwell. Their injuries lie in three separate systems: the core, the scent channels, and the wolf-form ember. Forcing your essence into them would make the rejection worse.""Then what do we do?""We find matching donors. Each injury requires a different source, and donation may permanently weaken the donor's wolf form."For the first time, Celine hated that her wolf soul could not save the people sh

Callum was the first to kneel. His knees struck loose stone, and he raised both hands away from his weapons. Celine's chest tightened. "Do not listen to her."Callum did not look at Cassandra. He was measuring the edge of the array out of the corner of his eye. He was three steps short of the outermost moon line, and standing would trip the silverthorn alarm, but from a kneeling position he could work his way forward bit by bit."Whatever you want to prove, I'll go along with it," he said. "Take the keystone off the back of her neck first."Mara and Edmund quickly understood his plan and knelt as well. Rafe followed. The Vails did not hesitate.Cassandra's laughter rang through the mine. "Now you understand who matters? I used to cough once, and every one of you abandoned her. Now you'd throw away your dignity for her."Delia said through her tears, "We were wrong. Hate us, but stop hurting her.""I don't hate you." Cassandra tilted her head. "I just want you to choose me again."She o
