Chapter 8

Autor: Daphne
As night fell, the Redridge pack left the territory in groups for the solstice prayers on White Moon Mountain.

Delia knocked on Celine's door before she went. "Your sister had a bad shock today. There will be another draining after the prayers. Do not wander off."

Celine stood in the empty room and called back once.

No one opened the door to check her wounds. Hearing her answer was enough; they assumed her wolf soul would remain exactly where it had always been.

Scent images kept arriving through the pack network from the mountain road. Warren wrote, May the Redridge heir never suffer another eclipse. Delia wrote, May my daughter Cassandra know peace all her life. Gavin wrote, May my sister inherit the pack seal without trouble.

Rafe's prayer tablet was the shortest. One line. May C always be at peace.

In her last life, when Celine found that tablet, she held it and cried for a long time. She thought C was Celine, until she saw the full name on the back: Cassandra.

She had fooled herself for four years on one shared initial.

Celine shouldered the tidesalt case containing everything she owned and climbed through the side-wing window. The moonbinding chains had left her wrists raw and bleeding. She followed an abandoned hunting trail to the ruins of the Ancestral Fire and laid her renunciation of Redridge citizenship on the stone altar.

She laid the obsidian bond ring beside the signature.

Though the old pact's public ceremony had never taken place, it had already left a faint pull inside her. If Rafe concentrated, he could still sense her approximate direction. Celine took the packet of moon salt that came with the Greytide deed and poured it over the Redridge mark on her wrist.

The grains touched skin and burned up at once in silver-blue flame.

The mark tightened like a living thing. Warren's commands, Delia's scolding, Gavin's taunts, and every one of Rafe's promises to make it up to her afterward pressed through the scent network. Her inner wolf howled in agony, begging her not to sever the bond it had known since birth.

Celine emptied the whole bag of moon salt over it.

"From this day forward, I renounce Redridge citizenship and revoke every authorization over my wolf soul."

The mark went out in the fire, inch by inch.

An emergency summons came down from the mountain. Cassandra had collapsed at the prayer altar, vomiting black blood. Warren's Alpha command slammed into Celine's mind along the final thread of scent between them.

Come back. Get to the healing den now.

Delia's and Gavin's messages came right after.

Your sister cannot hold on.

Where are you?

Do not make us come and drag you back.

Rafe issued no command. He only called her name again and again. "Celine, answer me. Whatever this is, come back and save her first. One last time. Name your terms, and we'll meet them—whatever they are."

Celine did not slow down.

At the edge of the coast, gray-white tide fog parted to either side. A door made of water stood among the rocks exposed by the receding tide. Beyond it waited no Redridge scent and no Alpha command—only the distant rush of surf.

The gatekeeper witch checked the deed. "Once you cross, all local pack marks stop working. Do you confirm?"

A wolf howl went up in the woods behind her. Rafe had felt the pull fading and was already coming with others.

Celine tore the last thread of Redridge scent out of her chest and stepped through the Tide Gate.

When Rafe burst from the tree line, all he saw was her back. He reached for her, but his fingers passed through the closing tide fog.

"Celine!"

She did not look back.

The Tide Gate slammed shut between them.

Rafe lay unconscious in the healing house for seven days.Warren had suffered damage to his shoulder core. Delia had injured her essence by forcing out the soothing scent. Gavin's right arm would never shift again. Once a day, Celine reviewed their records with the physicians and changed their dressings when needed. She did not use her wolf soul.On the eighth day, when Warren could sit up, the first thing he said was, "You're still willing to look after us. Does that not mean..."He did not finish it."It means you saved me in the gallery, and I'm willing to care for the injured." Celine returned the medicine bottle to the table. "It doesn't mean I've forgiven what you stole from my childhood, the forced drainings, or the whipping at the Ancestral Fire."Delia lay in the next bed, tears spilling at once. "We don't expect you to erase it all. Could we keep even a little contact? Once a year would be enough.""No.""Celine, I'm your mother.""That's exactly why the past weighs more, not

When the solstice moon came again, the Ashfords held Celine's first solo moon-map exhibition. The exhibition was called The First Howl of Freedom. No family history appeared at the entrance—only Celine's name. Migration Chart of the Thirteen Moonwells of the North hung at the center, its restored original sigil clear beneath the lights.Mara gave her wolfberry-free paints, while Edmund placed the Lone Wolf Navigation Project's hundredth safety deed in a display case. Callum planned no surprise. Before the doors opened, he simply asked, "Do you want me beside you all day, or would you rather have some space?""Stay with me."So he stood at her side.An hour after the exhibition opened, the Vails and Rafe came in on the public invitation. They did not cross the guest line and they released no private scent.Delia brought a case full of gifts. "These are what I owed you on every birth moon. I know it can't be made up. I only want you to take them."Celine did not open the case. "Gifts giv

Celine signed her name at the end of the mate pact. The sigil did not take effect at once. Through a remote moon seal, the clerk asked both of them again whether they were acting freely, whether they understood how to withdraw, and whether they were willing to form a mate bond without sharing control of each other's talents.Callum answered first. "I am."Celine held the pen and saw that Rafe was still standing at the garden entrance."I am," she said. Two kinds of moonlight met across the contract, but no mark of ownership formed. Callum's scent stopped at the edge of her awareness and waited. Celine stepped closer and took his hand. Only then did silver resonance illuminate their palms. The warmth did not burrow into her wolf soul or lock her wolf form. It told her only one thing: another person was here.Rafe closed his eyes."I'll wait for you," he said. "However long it takes."Celine let go of Callum's hand and turned to him. "Do not wait."Rafe went still."If waiting means you

Cassandra was caught on an abandoned highway thirty miles from the mine. The Moon Council tried Cassandra publicly for hiring Silverclaw poachers, attempted murder with wolfsbane, falsifying succession records, and awakening a forbidden wolf vein. The Vails did not ask the pack to handle the matter internally. They surrendered the Redridge ledgers and admitted that Alpha authority had been used to conceal evidence.Celine did not attend. When the clerk asked for her position on sentencing, Celine requested only two protections. "She must never again act under a Redridge identity, and she must never be allowed near another wolf-soul carrier."The court remanded Cassandra to eclipse prison. The cross-territory damage caused by the forbidden wolf vein required a second review, but she would remain in custody until final judgment. Celine closed the trial record and returned to her lone-wolf route map.Once he had recovered, Callum took her to the moon-map garden behind the castle. There we

When Celine woke, she was lying in a rescue tent outside the mine. The silverthorn wounds had been treated. Her wolf soul was weak, but it had not run dry again. The healer explained that when the vein burst, everyone had shielded Celine at the center. She had suffered the least.Callum, Mara, and Edmund were still behind the stone doors of the operating chamber.Eclipse burns had penetrated their core essence, and ordinary medicine could not remove them. Celine gripped the bed frame and stood. "Use my wolf soul."The healer stopped her. "It's incompatible. Your essence comes from a tidal moonwell. Their injuries lie in three separate systems: the core, the scent channels, and the wolf-form ember. Forcing your essence into them would make the rejection worse.""Then what do we do?""We find matching donors. Each injury requires a different source, and donation may permanently weaken the donor's wolf form."For the first time, Celine hated that her wolf soul could not save the people sh

Callum was the first to kneel. His knees struck loose stone, and he raised both hands away from his weapons. Celine's chest tightened. "Do not listen to her."Callum did not look at Cassandra. He was measuring the edge of the array out of the corner of his eye. He was three steps short of the outermost moon line, and standing would trip the silverthorn alarm, but from a kneeling position he could work his way forward bit by bit."Whatever you want to prove, I'll go along with it," he said. "Take the keystone off the back of her neck first."Mara and Edmund quickly understood his plan and knelt as well. Rafe followed. The Vails did not hesitate.Cassandra's laughter rang through the mine. "Now you understand who matters? I used to cough once, and every one of you abandoned her. Now you'd throw away your dignity for her."Delia said through her tears, "We were wrong. Hate us, but stop hurting her.""I don't hate you." Cassandra tilted her head. "I just want you to choose me again."She o
