Chapter 2

Author: Koi Event
Early the next morning, I heard voices coming from outside my bedroom.

I shot upright in bed.

This old apartment belonged to Mom. After my divorce, I couldn't afford to rent a place of my own, so she'd let me stay here temporarily.

The bedroom door was forced open. Mom and Victoria walked in with several unfamiliar men in tow.

My eyes immediately landed on the identification badge clipped to the chest of the man closest to me. It read "Psychiatric Evaluator".

"What are you doing?" I yelped as I scrambled into the corner of the bed, shielding Lily.

"Dr. Cordone says your condition isn't good right now," Mom said as she walked over with a cold expression. "These two psychiatric evaluators are here to conduct an assessment."

"There's nothing wrong with me."

"Denial is a classic defense mechanism," one of the evaluators replied as he pushed up his glasses and pulled out a voice recorder. "Ms. Bellini, please step away from the baby. Your current state shows aggressive tendencies."

I clenched my jaw as I glared at them.

"Get out!"

Victoria sighed and took a step forward. Her eyes traveled across Lily and me with scrutiny.

"Emilia," she said with a sigh, her voice dripping with condescending pity. "Just look at her. She needs a professional pediatrician, and she needs a nursery with climate control. And you? You can barely take care of yourself. How could you possibly take care of her?"

As she spoke, she reached out to touch Lily's cheek.

"Don't touch her!" I slapped her hand away.

She clutched her wrist and stumbled back half a step, putting on a startled expression. Mom rushed forward immediately and clamped a hand around my shoulder, her sharp nails digging into my flesh.

"Control yourself, Emilia!" she snapped coldly. "Your sister put aside multimillion-dollar cases at her law firm to come here and see you, and this is how you repay her?"

Her grip was so hard that it hurt, and I struggled to pull back. The movement startled Lily awake, and she burst into tears.

"For goodness' sake, she's crying," Victoria huffed, frowning as impatience crept into her voice. "Give the baby to me. The hysterical state you're in now is only going to terrify her!"

I turned around, putting my back to them and shielding Lily tightly against my chest.

"Ms. Bellini," the evaluator standing in the back finally spoke up. "Please be aware that you've just exhibited aggressive behavior. If you continue to refuse to cooperate, our report will explicitly note signs of severe manic tendencies."

I turned to face him. "What agency are you with? What gives you the right to evaluate me?"

"We were retained by your family," the evaluator answered expressionlessly.

"I didn't hire you."

"Your mother and sister did. Under state family law, when immediate family members suspect that your current mental state may pose a threat to a minor, they have the right to request an emergency intervention. Your current behavior only confirms their concerns."

Emergency intervention.

They'd already slapped the label of an "unfit mother" on me.

To the side, Mom elegantly smoothed the creases of her silk scarf.

"Sir, as you can see for yourself, her failed marriage has completely broken her. She's suffering from severe paranoia right now, and leaving Lily here with her would practically be a crime," she said, her voice thick with feigned sorrow.

"Margaret," I called her by her name. "Must you resort to such dirty tricks to steal my daughter from me?"

"How dare you speak to me like that!" Her expression turned cold. "I'm just trying to help you get the intervention you need. Once your mental state is fixed, I'll pay for you to start over. But in this family, a broke single mother will be nothing but a burden on the next generation."

"I don't need your charity."

"But Lily does!" Victoria insisted as she stepped forward aggressively. "She needs a home in a good school district. She needs a trust fund. She needs parents who can take her on weekend getaways. Meanwhile, you can't even afford next month's health insurance premium."

I met her intimidating gaze head-on.

"I went through 30 hours of labor to give birth to her. I'm her sole legal guardian."

Victoria flicked her curls contemptuously. "Don't be naive, Emilia. Giving birth to her doesn't mean you're capable of raising her. The one who can provide the best life for her is the one who's fit to be her real mother. How can you possibly compete with me?"

She turned to look at the evaluators.

"Record every single word of her outburst just now. It's obvious she's lost her basic parental capabilities. Notify Child Protective Services and have them step in."

The evaluator nodded and began scribbling something on his clipboard.

"Get out," I said softly.

"Emilia."

Mom walked over and tried to yank Lily out of my hands. "Be good and hand the baby over to Victoria."

I grabbed the glass of water from the nightstand and splashed it straight into her face.

"Get out!"

Water trickled down Mom's cheeks as she stood there frozen, stunned into silence.

The evaluator took a step back, frowning and rapidly scribbling on his clipboard.

"Uncontrolled emotional outburst accompanied by severe violent tendencies," he said. "I recommend that the family immediately petition the court for an emergency injunction to suspend her parental rights."

The damning evidence hit the Bellini family like a wrecking ball, leaving them shattered. The public's outrage shifted direction instantly, and this time, it was even more intense than before."Goodness! He fabricated psychiatric records to steal her child? What kind of unhinged criminal is this brother-in-law?""The mother stole the divorced daughter's last savings to give to her eldest daughter, and she calls that 'supporting' her? That's straight-up robbery!""LOL! Gravely ill? What? Is she getting surgery in the Losta Isles? What a family of entitled, parasitic leeches!"The story exploded across social media. Not only did it completely clear my name, but my image as an independent, clear-headed single mother struck a chord with the public and brought Daybreak's core values into sharp focus. Countless working women and mothers flooded the official store, showing their support by opening their wallets.First-week sales tripled. As I was leaving work that evening, a dishevele

The day after I went to the mall, Astral Group officially launched its new baby and maternity brand, Daybreak. As the brand director, I worked nonstop for nearly a week. The launch was a huge success, and the first-day sales shattered the company's three-year sales record for comparable product lines. At the celebratory dinner, Astral Group's vice president, Julian Reed, personally approached me with a glass of champagne, his eyes filled with praise."Great job, Emilia. I knew I was right to make an exception and take a chance on you back then."I smiled, clinked glasses with him, and drank my champagne in one go.Just then, my assistant rushed over in a panic and handed me a tablet."Ms. Bellini, we have a problem! You're… You're trending on Twitter."Frowning slightly, I took the tablet. At the top of the trending list was a glaring headline."Astral Group Executive Abandons Birth Family and Refuses to Help Gravely Ill Sister."In the attached video, Mom, who had always been

After joining Astral Group, my life finally started getting back on track. With a steady income, I moved out of Sarah's place and rented a high-end apartment close to the office with top-notch security. I also hired a reliable nanny, Mary Barrino, to look after Lily during the day and took over childcare myself in the evenings.Life was hectic but fulfilling. On a typical afternoon two months later, I was in a conference room reviewing a marketing proposal for a new product when the receptionist knocked on the door and came in with an awkward look on her face."Ms. Bellini, there's an older woman here to see you. She says… She says she's your mother."The conference room instantly fell silent.I closed my laptop."Got it. Have her wait for me in the reception room."When I opened the door to the reception room, I found Mom sitting there on the couch. It had only been two months since I'd last seen her, but she looked nearly a decade older. Her hair, usually styled to perfection

I packed only a few changes of clothes and Lily's stuff. Everything else I left behind. There was barely anything in this apartment that truly belonged to me anyway."Stop right there!"Mom blocked the doorway, her eyes bloodshot as she glared at me as if I were her mortal enemy."If you dare set foot out that door today, don't ever expect protection from the Bellini family again!"I'd heard that exact same threat for over 20 years. Every time I refused to bend to her will, she resorted to the same ultimatum. I used to be terrified, and I'd give in. But now, I just found it laughable."Okay," I answered, pulling my suitcase behind me without breaking stride. "You can keep the 15,000 dollars you transferred out of my account. Consider it repayment for all the years you've 'invested' in me. From now on, we're even."I walked around her and opened the door."Do you think you can live a better life out there?" Mom screamed after me. "You're a penniless single mother with a deadweigh

After a soft beep, the recording app on my phone started playing crisp, clear audio. It was a recording of a conversation that had happened right outside the bedroom door after it had closed."Dr. Cordone has already told us to note down that she has severe depression with manic episodes and self-harm tendencies."It was the voice of the bespectacled evaluator."Okay," the other evaluator replied. "But aside from being a little emotional earlier, her logic was perfectly sound, and she didn't show any signs of self-harm, either.""Are you dumb?" The first voice dropped to a whisper. "Are the checks from Alexander and Margaret not big enough? As long as we give them this preliminary report, they can initiate the emergency adoption process. All we have to do is sign it. If anything goes wrong, Dr. Cordone's private hospital will take the fall."The faint scratching of pen on paper followed. When the recording ended, a deathly silence fell over the bedroom.Aunt Matilda and Uncle R

With a loud bang, the door burst open.Uncle Roberto straightened the cuff of his custom-tailored suit and strode into the bedroom first, with Aunt Matilda following close behind, while Mom and Victoria brought up the rear. The sudden rush of light flooded the dim bedroom, stinging my eyes so badly I could barely keep them open."Oh! Good heavens!" Aunt Matilda pinched her nose. "How can anyone raise a baby in conditions like these?"The room wasn't actually dirty. It just didn't meet the kind of picture-perfect home standards that Victoria maintained with the high-end housekeeping staff she employed year-round."Give Lily to me," Uncle Roberto demanded as he came straight toward me."Don't touch her!" I pulled away from him, keeping Lily's face buried against the crook of my neck."Give me the child."Uncle Roberto took another step toward me, his hands already reaching out."She's my daughter.""Who do you think you're negotiating with? Stop being so damn stubborn, Emilia,
