Chapter 1

The apartment finally fell silent.

Victoria Bellini, my sister, furrowed her brow and looked at me as if I were insane.

"You've lost your mind, Emilia."

Mom, meanwhile, coldly declared that her 28 years of raising me had been a total failure.

Stepping over the shattered glass, I held my daughter close, retreated into the bedroom, and locked the door behind us.

"Emilia, open the door. You're scaring Lily."

Mom's voice was as calm and controlled as ever, making me sound like the utterly unreasonable one for locking myself in the room.

I leaned against the wall and gently patted Lily's back. She'd only just stopped crying, and tear tracks still stained her cheeks. Her tiny hands clutched my collar in a death grip.

"Emilia," Victoria called from the other side of the door. "Don't blame Mom. You just got out of a toxic marriage. You have no steady income, and you don't even have health insurance. How are you going to raise her?"

"I can find a job," I called back through the door, my voice hoarse.

"What kind of job?" Mom scoffed from outside. "A gallery assistant job that doesn't even make minimum wage? Victoria and Alexander have a mansion, and they've already reserved a spot for Lily at the top private preschool. If she lives with them, she'll be on the elite track from day one. But if she stays with you, what will she live on? Food stamps?"

Silence fell outside the door for a moment.

Alexander Cordone, Victoria's husband, cleared his throat.

"Emilia, from an economic and resource allocation standpoint, concentrating our resources on the people with the greatest need—who can also provide the optimal environment—is the best choice."

He was using the same logic he applied as an investment banking executive to negotiate the custody of my daughter.

"Get out," I said.

"You're still as stubborn as ever," Mom snapped, pacing back and forth outside the door. "I've already made an appointment with the lawyer for you. Alexander knows a family court judge. We can fast-track the adoption paperwork tomorrow and get it over with."

My head snapped up.

"What gives you the right to make decisions for me?"

"Because my decision is the right one!" Her voice rose, carrying the kind of authority that brooked no argument. "From the time you were a kid, which of your achievements wasn't planned out by me?"

Lily stirred in my arms, fussing to be fed. I unbuttoned my shirt and nestled her against my chest. A tear fell onto her forehead, making her whimper uncomfortably.

"Mom," Victoria said in a low voice, though I could still hear her clearly. "Emilia's behavior right now looks a lot like severe postpartum depression. I've read about cases like this. Mothers with depression can easily cause irreversible harm to their babies."

"You're right," Mom replied without hesitation. "She even smashed a liquor bottle just now. She's clearly unstable. Victoria, call Dr. Cordone right away and have him set up an appointment with a psychiatrist for your sister."

Dr. Richard Cordone was Alexander's father and a renowned psychiatric specialist at a prestigious private hospital.

My heart sank a little further with every word.

They were standing outside, discussing how to strip me of my parental rights, using medical and legal justifications to make it all look legitimate.

"Emilia, just take tonight to calm down," Alexander said, knocking on the door. "We'll bring a doctor over tomorrow to evaluate you."

Their footsteps gradually faded away. A moment later, I heard the sound of the front door clicking shut.

I didn't dare let my guard down. Holding Lily close, I went to the window and looked down. Alexander's black Maybach was parked below. Mom and Victoria walked out together, with the latter holding the adoption papers in her hand. Mom patted her on the shoulder, and she lowered her head with a smile.

Once they drove off, I pulled out my phone, intending to message a lawyer friend for help. Before I could, however, the screen lit up with a notification from my banking app.

"15,000 dollars has been transferred out of your joint account."

That was my entire life savings.

I froze. I'd opened that account before I got married, and as a joint account holder, Mom had retained access all along.

My phone rang.

"I've moved your money into a trust for now," Mom informed me calmly. "You're emotionally unstable right now. Once you pass your psychological evaluation, I'll give you a monthly allowance."

"That's my money!"

"That money belongs to the Bellini family. The family has invested in you for years, so you should think about what's best for the family, too. Victoria is about to hold a christening for Lily, and she needs money for the venue and party favors."

"Who gave her permission to hold a christening?"

"I did," Mom answered with a sigh. "Grow up, Emilia. When Dr. Cordone comes tomorrow, I suggest you cooperate."

With that, she hung up.

I stared at the blank screen, my hands and feet turning ice-cold.

The damning evidence hit the Bellini family like a wrecking ball, leaving them shattered. The public's outrage shifted direction instantly, and this time, it was even more intense than before."Goodness! He fabricated psychiatric records to steal her child? What kind of unhinged criminal is this brother-in-law?""The mother stole the divorced daughter's last savings to give to her eldest daughter, and she calls that 'supporting' her? That's straight-up robbery!""LOL! Gravely ill? What? Is she getting surgery in the Losta Isles? What a family of entitled, parasitic leeches!"The story exploded across social media. Not only did it completely clear my name, but my image as an independent, clear-headed single mother struck a chord with the public and brought Daybreak's core values into sharp focus. Countless working women and mothers flooded the official store, showing their support by opening their wallets.First-week sales tripled. As I was leaving work that evening, a dishevele

The day after I went to the mall, Astral Group officially launched its new baby and maternity brand, Daybreak. As the brand director, I worked nonstop for nearly a week. The launch was a huge success, and the first-day sales shattered the company's three-year sales record for comparable product lines. At the celebratory dinner, Astral Group's vice president, Julian Reed, personally approached me with a glass of champagne, his eyes filled with praise."Great job, Emilia. I knew I was right to make an exception and take a chance on you back then."I smiled, clinked glasses with him, and drank my champagne in one go.Just then, my assistant rushed over in a panic and handed me a tablet."Ms. Bellini, we have a problem! You're… You're trending on Twitter."Frowning slightly, I took the tablet. At the top of the trending list was a glaring headline."Astral Group Executive Abandons Birth Family and Refuses to Help Gravely Ill Sister."In the attached video, Mom, who had always been

After joining Astral Group, my life finally started getting back on track. With a steady income, I moved out of Sarah's place and rented a high-end apartment close to the office with top-notch security. I also hired a reliable nanny, Mary Barrino, to look after Lily during the day and took over childcare myself in the evenings.Life was hectic but fulfilling. On a typical afternoon two months later, I was in a conference room reviewing a marketing proposal for a new product when the receptionist knocked on the door and came in with an awkward look on her face."Ms. Bellini, there's an older woman here to see you. She says… She says she's your mother."The conference room instantly fell silent.I closed my laptop."Got it. Have her wait for me in the reception room."When I opened the door to the reception room, I found Mom sitting there on the couch. It had only been two months since I'd last seen her, but she looked nearly a decade older. Her hair, usually styled to perfection

I packed only a few changes of clothes and Lily's stuff. Everything else I left behind. There was barely anything in this apartment that truly belonged to me anyway."Stop right there!"Mom blocked the doorway, her eyes bloodshot as she glared at me as if I were her mortal enemy."If you dare set foot out that door today, don't ever expect protection from the Bellini family again!"I'd heard that exact same threat for over 20 years. Every time I refused to bend to her will, she resorted to the same ultimatum. I used to be terrified, and I'd give in. But now, I just found it laughable."Okay," I answered, pulling my suitcase behind me without breaking stride. "You can keep the 15,000 dollars you transferred out of my account. Consider it repayment for all the years you've 'invested' in me. From now on, we're even."I walked around her and opened the door."Do you think you can live a better life out there?" Mom screamed after me. "You're a penniless single mother with a deadweigh

After a soft beep, the recording app on my phone started playing crisp, clear audio. It was a recording of a conversation that had happened right outside the bedroom door after it had closed."Dr. Cordone has already told us to note down that she has severe depression with manic episodes and self-harm tendencies."It was the voice of the bespectacled evaluator."Okay," the other evaluator replied. "But aside from being a little emotional earlier, her logic was perfectly sound, and she didn't show any signs of self-harm, either.""Are you dumb?" The first voice dropped to a whisper. "Are the checks from Alexander and Margaret not big enough? As long as we give them this preliminary report, they can initiate the emergency adoption process. All we have to do is sign it. If anything goes wrong, Dr. Cordone's private hospital will take the fall."The faint scratching of pen on paper followed. When the recording ended, a deathly silence fell over the bedroom.Aunt Matilda and Uncle R

With a loud bang, the door burst open.Uncle Roberto straightened the cuff of his custom-tailored suit and strode into the bedroom first, with Aunt Matilda following close behind, while Mom and Victoria brought up the rear. The sudden rush of light flooded the dim bedroom, stinging my eyes so badly I could barely keep them open."Oh! Good heavens!" Aunt Matilda pinched her nose. "How can anyone raise a baby in conditions like these?"The room wasn't actually dirty. It just didn't meet the kind of picture-perfect home standards that Victoria maintained with the high-end housekeeping staff she employed year-round."Give Lily to me," Uncle Roberto demanded as he came straight toward me."Don't touch her!" I pulled away from him, keeping Lily's face buried against the crook of my neck."Give me the child."Uncle Roberto took another step toward me, his hands already reaching out."She's my daughter.""Who do you think you're negotiating with? Stop being so damn stubborn, Emilia,
