Chapter 3

Autor: Koi Event
The next day, my family's "trial" against me officially began, and the tiny apartment was soon packed with relatives, including Uncle Roberto, Mom's younger brother who was a venture capitalist, and Aunt Matilda, Mom's older sister who worked for a charitable foundation.

They sat around the living room as if they were holding a board meeting.

Mom had locked me inside the bedroom, so all I could do was listen through the gap in the door.

"Emilia's never been able to handle anything," Mom said as she poured coffee, her voice heavy with exhaustion. "This divorce has completely destroyed her mental health."

"Goodness, how did things end up like this?" Aunt Matilda said, sighing. "Thank goodness for you, Victoria. You're willing to step up at a time like this and take this mess off everyone's hands just to protect the family's reputation."

"We all carry the Bellini name, Aunt Matilda. If I don't step up, who will?"

Victoria's words were always so polished and flawless, leaving no room for criticism.

"Besides, Alexander adores the baby as well. He says he'll raise her as his own. It'll be a great boost for our family's public image, too."

"Alexander truly is the complete package," Uncle Roberto said, taking a sip of his coffee. "What about Emilia's ex-husband? Why hasn't he shown his face?"

"Don't even mention that man." Mom scoffed coldly. "The moment he learned that Emilia was mentally unstable, he signed away his parental rights and ran as far away as he could."

I leaned against the bedroom door, holding Lily, who had just fallen fast asleep after nursing.

I'd divorced my ex-husband, David Russo, because he had cheated on me. Back then, I'd forced him to agree to the divorce with ironclad proof I'd obtained through a private investigator. But according to Mom, it had become a story of him dumping me because I was mentally unstable, and the family had to spend money to clean up my mess.

Uncle Roberto, however, bought her story completely.

"Is the baby still with her?" he asked.

"Yeah. She clutches onto Lily for dear life and refuses to let go. When the psychiatric evaluators came over yesterday, she threw water in their faces! If she has an episode one day and lands us on the front page of the newspaper, what would that do to our family's reputation?"

"That won't do at all!" Aunt Matilda shrieked. "Those tabloids love scandals involving the wealthy elite. Victoria, you need to take the baby away immediately!"

"I'd love to, Aunt Matilda," Victoria said with a sigh, putting on a helpless expression. "But Emilia won't agree to it, and legally, she's still Lily's mother. If she calls the police, it'll be considered kidnapping. That would leave a permanent stain on Alexander's record."

"Who cares about the legal risks?" Uncle Roberto snapped as he slammed his coffee cup onto the marble table. "This is just a private family matter. One round of golf with the judge will take care of everything. Who's going to take the word of a mentally ill woman with violent tendencies? Just send someone in to take the child!"

"That's right!" Aunt Matilda chimed in, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Don't worry too much, Victoria. Everything we're doing is for the family."

For the family.

The Bellini family name was powerful, and that was why we'd all carried it, regardless of whom we married. But for the past 20-something years, the concept of "for the family" had weighed on me like an invisible boulder.

When we were children, Victoria stole an antique necklace from me—the only heirloom our grandmother had left me.

I cried and begged her to give it back.

Mom, however, locked me in my room and said coldly, "Victoria is the eldest daughter. She's going to a society ball next week and needs that necklace to keep up appearances. You need to think about the bigger picture. This is for the family."

After I graduated from college, I saved up some money to rent an art studio of my own. But Victoria was short on the down payment for a luxury condo. Mom froze my account without hesitation and transferred the money over to her.

"You need to think about the family. Victoria's new condo will help her get promoted. Once she does, you'll benefit from it too."

Except Victoria had never let me benefit from her at all.

When I'd discovered evidence of David's affair, I had been devastated that I'd called Victoria in the middle of the night.

The only thing she'd said to me was, "It's 2:00 am right now. Alexander has a billion-dollar merger to negotiate tomorrow. Take care of your own problems, and don't let your scandal affect his company's stock price."

Now, they were using the same "for the family" excuse to steal my own flesh and blood away from me.

Footsteps sounded outside the bedroom door, drawing closer.

"Emilia, open the door."

Uncle Roberto's voice carried the familiar arrogance of someone accustomed to calling the shots.

"Your elders are all here. What kind of behavior is this, hiding in your room?"

I bit my lip, staring at the doorknob.

Losing his patience, Uncle Roberto rattled it forcefully.

"Why is it locked? Victoria, get someone up here to break down the door!"

"Uncle Roberto, there could be legal trouble if we force our way in," Victoria said, pretending to weigh the consequences.

"What troubles? This apartment is under the family trust. I decide what happens here!" he growled coldly. "We're taking Lily today, no matter what. We absolutely can't allow the Bellini family bloodline to be destroyed by a crazy woman! Break it down!"

A heavy crash shook the door.

Lily startled in her sleep, her tiny hands tightening around my shirt. I clutched her tightly against me and retreated to the corner farthest from the door.

Hidden inside the withered pothos plant on the windowsill was a miniature high-definition camera with direct-to-cloud streaming capabilities. I'd bought it the night before—with next-day delivery—using the last of my available credit.

Another deafening crash sounded, and the lock began to give way.

"It's almost open. One more hit!" Uncle Roberto ordered.

The damning evidence hit the Bellini family like a wrecking ball, leaving them shattered. The public's outrage shifted direction instantly, and this time, it was even more intense than before."Goodness! He fabricated psychiatric records to steal her child? What kind of unhinged criminal is this brother-in-law?""The mother stole the divorced daughter's last savings to give to her eldest daughter, and she calls that 'supporting' her? That's straight-up robbery!""LOL! Gravely ill? What? Is she getting surgery in the Losta Isles? What a family of entitled, parasitic leeches!"The story exploded across social media. Not only did it completely clear my name, but my image as an independent, clear-headed single mother struck a chord with the public and brought Daybreak's core values into sharp focus. Countless working women and mothers flooded the official store, showing their support by opening their wallets.First-week sales tripled. As I was leaving work that evening, a dishevele

The day after I went to the mall, Astral Group officially launched its new baby and maternity brand, Daybreak. As the brand director, I worked nonstop for nearly a week. The launch was a huge success, and the first-day sales shattered the company's three-year sales record for comparable product lines. At the celebratory dinner, Astral Group's vice president, Julian Reed, personally approached me with a glass of champagne, his eyes filled with praise."Great job, Emilia. I knew I was right to make an exception and take a chance on you back then."I smiled, clinked glasses with him, and drank my champagne in one go.Just then, my assistant rushed over in a panic and handed me a tablet."Ms. Bellini, we have a problem! You're… You're trending on Twitter."Frowning slightly, I took the tablet. At the top of the trending list was a glaring headline."Astral Group Executive Abandons Birth Family and Refuses to Help Gravely Ill Sister."In the attached video, Mom, who had always been

After joining Astral Group, my life finally started getting back on track. With a steady income, I moved out of Sarah's place and rented a high-end apartment close to the office with top-notch security. I also hired a reliable nanny, Mary Barrino, to look after Lily during the day and took over childcare myself in the evenings.Life was hectic but fulfilling. On a typical afternoon two months later, I was in a conference room reviewing a marketing proposal for a new product when the receptionist knocked on the door and came in with an awkward look on her face."Ms. Bellini, there's an older woman here to see you. She says… She says she's your mother."The conference room instantly fell silent.I closed my laptop."Got it. Have her wait for me in the reception room."When I opened the door to the reception room, I found Mom sitting there on the couch. It had only been two months since I'd last seen her, but she looked nearly a decade older. Her hair, usually styled to perfection

I packed only a few changes of clothes and Lily's stuff. Everything else I left behind. There was barely anything in this apartment that truly belonged to me anyway."Stop right there!"Mom blocked the doorway, her eyes bloodshot as she glared at me as if I were her mortal enemy."If you dare set foot out that door today, don't ever expect protection from the Bellini family again!"I'd heard that exact same threat for over 20 years. Every time I refused to bend to her will, she resorted to the same ultimatum. I used to be terrified, and I'd give in. But now, I just found it laughable."Okay," I answered, pulling my suitcase behind me without breaking stride. "You can keep the 15,000 dollars you transferred out of my account. Consider it repayment for all the years you've 'invested' in me. From now on, we're even."I walked around her and opened the door."Do you think you can live a better life out there?" Mom screamed after me. "You're a penniless single mother with a deadweigh

After a soft beep, the recording app on my phone started playing crisp, clear audio. It was a recording of a conversation that had happened right outside the bedroom door after it had closed."Dr. Cordone has already told us to note down that she has severe depression with manic episodes and self-harm tendencies."It was the voice of the bespectacled evaluator."Okay," the other evaluator replied. "But aside from being a little emotional earlier, her logic was perfectly sound, and she didn't show any signs of self-harm, either.""Are you dumb?" The first voice dropped to a whisper. "Are the checks from Alexander and Margaret not big enough? As long as we give them this preliminary report, they can initiate the emergency adoption process. All we have to do is sign it. If anything goes wrong, Dr. Cordone's private hospital will take the fall."The faint scratching of pen on paper followed. When the recording ended, a deathly silence fell over the bedroom.Aunt Matilda and Uncle R

With a loud bang, the door burst open.Uncle Roberto straightened the cuff of his custom-tailored suit and strode into the bedroom first, with Aunt Matilda following close behind, while Mom and Victoria brought up the rear. The sudden rush of light flooded the dim bedroom, stinging my eyes so badly I could barely keep them open."Oh! Good heavens!" Aunt Matilda pinched her nose. "How can anyone raise a baby in conditions like these?"The room wasn't actually dirty. It just didn't meet the kind of picture-perfect home standards that Victoria maintained with the high-end housekeeping staff she employed year-round."Give Lily to me," Uncle Roberto demanded as he came straight toward me."Don't touch her!" I pulled away from him, keeping Lily's face buried against the crook of my neck."Give me the child."Uncle Roberto took another step toward me, his hands already reaching out."She's my daughter.""Who do you think you're negotiating with? Stop being so damn stubborn, Emilia,
