Chapter 1

"I am the exalted Luna of this pack, and my bond was a gift from the Moon Goddess. Tainted, it was worthless.

I needed no one but myself.

"What did you say?!" A crystal vial whistled past my ear and shattered against the stone wall.

Shards of glass and a month's worth of irreplaceable healing balm splattered across the floor.

My son's half-shifted eyes burned with a golden rage.

"How dare you say you're leaving him! I'm the one who should hate you! If anyone's leaving, it's me! I'm leaving you! The only one I respect is our pack's greatest Beta warrior, Aunt Valerie!"

I hadn't noticed my son, Rory, standing in the doorway. The raw power of an Alpha pup radiated from him, strong enough to make the herb racks tremble violently.

Right behind him stood Valerie, the pack's Beta.

She was tall and statuesque, clad in combat leathers that hugged her powerful frame.

The moment she saw me, her voice trembled with a practiced fragility. "Luna, please forgive me," she knelt, her face a mask of distress.

"I tried to stop the Alpha, but I had to obey his command. I never wanted him to tattoo my sigil on the mark, but I never imagined it would cause you such pain. I am so sorry. I swear it will never happen again. Please, forgive me."

She continued, tears welling in her eyes. "Luna, if it will appease your anger, use your healing power to punish me. I only beg you not to break with Alpha Wyatt. I could never bear to be the cause of a Rejection."

Seeing her kneeling, Wyatt's face hardened. "All this over a tiny tattoo? You're being hysterical."

"The Luna, bullying her own Beta," he scoffed. "Have you no shame?"

He moved to her side, helping her up by the shoulders, his expression laced with pity.

"You never cared about this mark before, so what does it matter if I added Valerie's sigil? She's a symbol of our pack's battle-forged glory. Must you be so narrow-minded?"

He said it so casually, as if discussing the weather. But this mark, seared into our souls by the Moon Goddess herself, was more precious to me than life. I don't flaunt what is precious to me; I protect it.

And he had casually defiled our sacred bond, tarnishing every memory we had built together.

It was his transgression, yet somehow, I was the one being called "narrow-minded."

Even Rory, his face contorted in rage, lunged forward. His half-shifted claws tore through my healer's cloak. "Who do you think you are, making Aunt Valerie kneel?" he snarled. "You're forgetting your place!"

"I'm ashamed to be your son."

He raised his sharp claws, about to rip my herb pouch to shreds. I shoved him away.

"Stop it!"

Rory fell hard onto the stone floor, staring at me in stunned disbelief.

The pup I had carried for ten months and raised with all my heart now called me a disgrace.

A pain, sharp as a silver needle, pierced my heart.

Fine, I thought, a shard of ice forming in my heart. Then you are no longer my son.

It was the first time I had ever laid a hand on him.

I ignored the shock in his eyes, bending down to gather the scattered herbs. Then, my voice cold, I spoke to the father and son.

"If you want to honor Valerie, then give her the rewards she deserves. Let the entire pack know of her deeds."

"But to desecrate our sacred mark for her? Aren't you afraid of the whispers? That your Beta wants my title so badly, she'd carve her name on our bond?"

Wyatt's expression grew uglier, his face a thundercloud. "Shut your mouth, Faye. There is nothing but respect between Valerie and me. Don't you dare stain our pure relationship with your filthy accusations."

I stared at his self-righteous face and felt a surge of absurd laughter.

If their bond was so pure, why did he leave me burning with mating fever to spend the night on patrol with her?

If she suffered a minor scratch, he would abandon his duties to brew her a poultice, while I, waiting for him in a downpour, was forgotten entirely.

At dinner, he would instinctively serve her the most tender cut of venison, while pushing the silverleaf greens I was allergic to in front of me.

And all of this… what was all of this? This was what he called a "pure relationship"?

Beside him, Valerie's eyes welled with tears, her long lashes fluttering as she looked up at Wyatt.

I didn't have the energy to argue anymore. It was time to lay my cards on the table.

"Wyatt and I are proceeding with the Rejection. You can drop the act."

"Congratulations. You've finally climbed from Beta warrior to the Luna's throne."

With that, I turned to leave. Another second in this room would make me sick.

[Epilogue: Wyatt's POV]Wyatt stood in his empty study, a crinkled newspaper clutched in his hand. The headline proclaimed in bold letters: Faye Mooncrest: The Continent's Most Celebrated Healer. In the photo, she was more radiant than she had been five years ago, standing beside Lucian, her face lit with a genuine smile he had never seen before. A smile that had once been his alone."Damn it." He slammed the newspaper onto the desk. The crystal ashtray shattered on impact.Five years. For five long years, he had waited for her to come back, waited for her forgiveness, waited for her to need him again. But she never returned."Alpha," his Beta said, knocking cautiously before entering. "More warriors on the southern border have been afflicted with silver poison. Our healers say…""Say what?" Wyatt's voice was as cold as ice."They can only slow the poison's spread, not cure it. This is the third case this month."Wyatt closed his eyes. Silver poison. A poison only Faye had ever been

"Faye! You can't be so cruel!" Wyatt's voice, laced with desperation and fury, carried across the border. "He's your son! How can you just stand there and watch him die?""As I said, I am no longer his mother."I turned to leave without another word."Wait!" Wyatt suddenly shouted. His desperate confession spilled out. "I was stalling! I never wanted to Reject you! I swear, Faye, I was just… having my fun. I was always going to come back to you. To our family.""Faye, stop this. Let's just put this behind us."I slowly turned to face the once-arrogant Alpha."It's too late, Wyatt," I said, my voice devoid of emotion. "The moment you chose Valerie, my path was clear."I pushed past Rory and started to walk away. When they tried to follow, my voice rang out, a cold warning. "Take one more step, and I will report you to the Council for harassment."Defeated, Wyatt stopped and led Rory away.Three days later, we stood in the Great Hall of the Alpha King's Council. Solemn stone pillars enci

Just then, a dozen of the Shadowmoon Pack's elite warriors surrounded Wyatt and his men. Each held a weapon, ready for a fight."Alpha Wyatt, you are not welcome here."Wyatt looked around, realizing he was severely outnumbered."This isn't over!" he snarled. "Lucian, you will pay the price for stealing my Luna!""I'd like to see you try," Lucian sneered back. The warriors escorted Wyatt and his entourage off the property by force. The next morning, Lucian knocked on my door."Faye, I have some bad news."I opened the door to see his grim expression. "Wyatt has filed a complaint with the Alpha King's Council. He's accusing me of poaching you, and of using political pressure to force you to stay.""Political pressure?" I scoffed. "If he wants to play politics, we'll play."Three days later, a she-wolf I didn't recognize stood there. An emissary from Wyatt. I'd mistaken her for a patient."Luna Faye, I was sent by Alpha Wyatt to deliver a message.""I'm not interested," I said without lo

[Faye's POV]"Welcome to the Shadowmoon Pack, Faye."Upon arriving at Lucian's pack, I was immediately put in charge of the medical center. Lucian himself was there to greet me at the door. He hadn't aged a day, still possessing the same handsome features he'd had as a young Alpha, and stood even taller than Wyatt."It's been too long. You are as beautiful and powerful as ever. I've had a private stone house prepared for you. Take a look when you have time. If you don't like the decor, just let me know, and I'll have it redone."I looked around. This medical center was far more modern than the one in Wyatt's pack, with better equipment and a more extensive apothecary."Thank you for giving me this opportunity," I said, placing my medical bag on the main treatment table."No, you have given us the opportunity," Lucian smiled. "It is our honor to have the Northern Continent's finest healer join our pack."Lucian had already introduced me to the entire pack before my arrival. So when hi

I took a deep breath of the air in Lucian's territory.Clean. Fresh. Free of the stench of betrayal. With the mind-link completely severed, I felt an unprecedented peace. The voices that had once caused me so much pain could no longer reach me.I drove toward the center of Lucian's pack, and the warriors I passed along the way nodded at me with respect. News traveled fast. They already knew I was coming.[Wyatt's POV]"Damn it!"Wyatt slammed a crystal glass on his desk, shattering it. Shards flew, cutting his hand, but he didn't notice the blood dripping onto the wood."You can't reach her? What do you mean you can't reach her?!" he roared at the communications officer."Alpha, she… she severed all mind-links. We can't get through," the officer stammered. After the mind-link failed, Wyatt had tried the warrior's comms. I had blocked all channels.Panic was a cold serpent coiling in his gut. Just as he was about to order his warriors to expand the search scope, his second-in-command bu

"Faye…" His voice trembled. "You've… you've changed…""You forced me to." I turned and walked back the way I came, each step crushing the fallen leaves. "As of today, we are done."Behind me, I heard Valerie's weak cries and Rory's terrified sobs.I didn't look back. When the car started, the sound of the engine was jarring in the quiet forest. I took one last look at Aiden's tombstone, still dusted with debris from the explosion."Mommy is going to a new place, sweetheart," I whispered, my hand stroking the steering wheel. "Mommy is going to be fine, and no one will ever be able to hurt you again. You can rest easy."The SUV roared out of the birch forest, its tires crunching over the leaves. I slammed my foot on the accelerator, heading straight for the pack border. The sun dipped below the horizon, and its golden light glared off the windshield, making my eyes ache. But just before the border, a familiar figure jumped into the middle of the road.It was Rory.He clung to the car, bl
