Chapter 2

Author: White Bunny
The entire banquet hall fell dead silent in an instant, every single eye in the room locking onto me.

Julian’s face darkened completely. The second his gaze shifted past me and landed on Avery, his eyes flared with pure rage.

“Avery! What the hell are you doing here?” Julian barked. “Didn’t I tell you to get lost and stay away from me?!”

The woman beside him, Cynthia Miller, also spotted Avery. She quickly covered her mouth, putting on an act of absolute shock.

“Oh my gosh, Julian, isn’t that the charity case from that poor background you used to sponsor?” Cynthia sneered. “How did she even track you down all the way here?”

She glanced at me, her lip curling. “And she brought someone carrying a sledgehammer? What is this, some kind of new-age begging?”

The corner of my mouth turned up, and I spoke directly toward the microphone’s direction.

“We aren’t here to beg. We’re here to collect a debt.”

I let my voice carry across the room. “Julian, you conned my friend using a fake deed to her house, and then you drugged her to try and kill her unborn child. We’re going to settle that score today, down to the last penny.”

Julian’s face drained of color. He lunged down the steps of the stage and thrust a finger directly in front of my face.

“Who the fuck are you? What kind of absolute bullshit are you spewing here?” he roared. “Security! Where the hell is security? Get these two lunatics out of here right now!”

Cynthia chimed in right behind him, her voice screeching through the hall. “I knew it! You’re just here to extort us! Julian, call the police immediately and have them thrown behind bars!”

Julian’s mother marched over as well, her eyes scanning me up and down with sharp, bitter malice.

“Who do you think you are? Did you put Avery up to this?” she snapped. “You look like total trash. I see you’ve stepped up your game, Avery. We haven’t seen you in a few days, and you’ve already reeled in some random thug to play your little knight in shining armor.”

As she spoke, she lunged forward, raising a hand to viciously shove Avery out of the way.

The exact millisecond her hand was about to make contact, I moved.

I lashed out and caught her by the wrist. I didn’t even use that much force, but she was instantly locked in place, unable to wrench herself free.

Julian’s mother let out a sharp cry of pain, the flesh on her face trembling. “What do you think you’re doing? Let go of me! You lowlife scum, how dare you lay a hand on me?!”

Seeing this, Julian let out a furious roar and swung a wild fist straight at my face.

“You’re fucking dead!”

I didn’t even let go of his mother. I simply lifted my other hand and effortlessly caught his incoming fist mid-air.

With a cold scoff, I twisted my wrist. Julian let out a pathetic shriek as the bone-crushing leverage forced him straight down onto his knees on the hard marble floor.

“All that shouting, and this is all the strength you’ve got?”

I tossed his hand aside, reached into my pocket, and pulled out a few crumpled ten-dollar bills, slapping them right against his face.

“Here’s your medical compensation. Is that enough?”

Cynthia scrambled a step back in sheer terror, pointing a shaking finger at me as she screamed, “Do you have any idea who I am? My dad is the chairman of the Miller Group! You dare cross me?!”

I slowly lifted my eyelids, fixing a dead-eyed stare on her.

“The Miller Group? The ones in construction supplies?” I asked dryly. “I heard your company was recently dragged into federal court for cutting corners and using counterfeit materials on a massive contract. Is that true?”

Cynthia’s face went completely pale. “You're lying! You’re making things up!”

Julian finally managed to scramble back to his feet, clutching his throbbing wrist. He glared at me with pure venom before turning his fury entirely back on Avery.

“Avery, so this is the little thug you brought along?” Julian snarled, his voice dripping with malice. “I really underestimated you. You actually learned how to find a man to back you up.”

He took a step closer, his eyes narrowing. “Didn’t I tell you to be a good, obedient girl? Do you seriously want me to have your father kicked straight out of the ICU before you’re finally satisfied?”

Avery’s entire body violently shuddered. Tears flooded her eyes all over again as she bit her lower lip so hard it nearly bled, terror completely freezing her tongue.

I reached back and pulled her firmly behind my utility belt, but that sudden movement caused her sleeve to slide up a fraction.

Her arm was covered in terrible bruises of different colors. New marks from recent beatings were layered over older, deep bruises, showing she had been abused again and again. It was horrifying to see.

The gaze in my eyes went completely cold. “Julian, not only did you scam her, but you’ve been physically abusing her too?”

A smirk twisted onto Julian’s face as he let out a dark, mocking laugh. “I’m just domesticating my own woman. What the fuck does that have to do with a broke contractor like you?”

He stepped up, trying to tower over me. “Take my advice and mind your own business. Otherwise, I will make sure you are utterly ruined in this city.”

I just smiled.

“And now you just want to kick us to the curb with a single boot? No damn way!” her brother snarled. “Hand over the cash! You spent a fortune on your dad’s hospital stay, so you sure as hell aren’t leaving us out in the cold!”Avery’s mother shoved her way forward, clawing her hands out to grasp Avery’s wrist, but Avery smoothly twisted her torso to dodge the contact. Her mother instantly dissolved into a theatrical, wailing display of fake grief. “Oh, my bitter, miserable life! How did I raise such a cold-blooded, ruthless daughter?! Are you really going to stand there and watch your own parent and brother starve to death on the streets?!”She peeked through her fingers, her voice screeching louder. “You’re a millionaire now! Just dropping the loose crumbs from between your fingers would be more than enough to keep us living comfortably!”I watched their pathetic little performance from inside the foyer, a wave of disgust washing over me.Avery stared at them in absolute silence.

“The Vance family went completely bankrupt. His parents couldn’t handle the shock and leaped to their deaths from a building.”Judge Miller swallowed hard, his hands trembling on the table. “Julian has absolutely nothing left now. He’s completely lost his mind, wandering the streets all day like a lunatic.”I quietly sipped my drink, offering no response. He struggled to continue, “Cynthia... she has also been officially expelled from her university. The Miller family business has completely plummeted. I know all of this is our own doing and that we deserve no sympathy. I only came today to beg you to stay your hand and leave them a single path to survive.”His eyes filled with a desperate plea. “I know I have no right to ask anything of you, but Cynthia is my only living relative. I cannot simply stand by and watch her be utterly destroyed.”I set my drink down, looking him dead in the eye. “Judge Miller, do you still honestly believe all of this is merely my personal vendetta ag

“Then the very next thing to be exposed to the public will be the Vance Corporation’s last five years of systemic tax evasion and explicit evidence of commercial bribery.”Julian’s eyes filled with pure, unadulterated terror. “You! How do you even dare to do this?!”I lifted an eyebrow casually. “Mr. Vance, before you question my capabilities, shouldn’t you look into exactly what kind of industry the Sterling family used to build their empire from the ground up?”I leaned back slightly. “The Sterling Legal Department is widely referred to in the business world as the ‘Corporate Graveyard.’ I am positive you have heard of its reputation.”Judge Palmer Miller’s legs went completely weak, nearly collapsing right onto the floor. He lunged forward, violently slamming his hands down onto Julian’s shoulders to silence any further remarks.“We agree! We agree to absolutely everything!”I continued smoothly, “Second, you will pay Avery a total sum of thirty million dollars to cover her em

“Do you believe me when I say I can have my son get you fired?!” she shrieked. The team of security guards stepped forward another inch, shifting into a tight, tactical semi-circle around them.“Mr. Julian Vance is certainly a valued guest of our establishment,” the security captain stated flatly. “However, the conduct of you two has explicitly breached the code of conduct for this venue. If you refuse to cooperate, we will be forced to take necessary measures.”Julian’s father thrust his neck forward, stepping up to bark directly into the guard’s face. “Let’s see which one of you actually dares to lay a hand on us! We are Judge Miller’s in-laws!”The corner of my mouth curled into a dark, mocking arc as I shifted my gaze toward a completely bloodless Judge Palmer Miller.“Judge Miller, I distinctly recall Miss Miller declaring with absolute certainty just a moment ago that the title of the Vance family’s daughter-in-law belonged solely to her,” I remarked dryly. “How is it that,

The security captain’s gaze dropped to the black card, and his entire body froze mid-motion.He snapped his spine completely straight, bowing with deep, utmost reverence. “M—Mr. Sterling! Please forgive us! We were blind to who you were and failed to recognize your distinguished status!”Cynthia burst into an exaggerated, hysterical laugh, pointing an aggressive finger at me. “He’s part of the Sterling family? Are you out of your mind?”She sneered, looking around the room. “Based on what? That cheap, fake card he probably printed in a basement somewhere? Julian, look at this absolute hobo. Which part of him looks anything like the legendary, elusive heir to the Sterling empire?”Cold sweat beaded across the security captain’s forehead, but he remained frozen in his deeply respectful posture. “Miss Miller, this black card is the Sovereign Card issued directly by Horizon Enterprises. There are fewer than five in this entire city.”He swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly. “E

“And you, Avery, get down on your knees too!” Cynthia shrieked. “Kneel and beg for our forgiveness!”Avery trembled violently from head to toe, instinctively trying to shrink back.I firmly grabbed her hand, pulling her safely behind my back before fixing my gaze entirely on Cynthia. “Make me kneel? Do you honestly think you have the standing to endure that?”Cynthia’s heart skipped a beat under the sheer weight of my stare, but she quickly forced her spine straight again. “Keep acting! Let’s see how arrogant you are once my uncle gets here!”Julian’s mother stepped forward to back her up, her mouth spewing vile, filthy insults. “Shut up! You’re just a broke loser looking for a handout! What, did you see how rich Julian is and decide to bring this woman here to scam him? Take a good look at yourself in the mirror before you start making a fool of yourself!”The older woman grew more worked up as she spoke. Suddenly, she lunged straight forward, thrusting her rough hands out and ag
