Chapter 17. Why She Let Me In

last update publish date: 2026-09-10 00:03:36
The garden was quiet.

Lily had abandoned the beetle and moved on to something more interesting near the stone wall — a caterpillar, moving with the slow impossible certainty of something that knew exactly where it was going even if no one else could see it.

She narrated its progress to me in a low serious voice.

As though I needed updating.

I sat beside her on the garden bench and listened.

And thought about Voss.

Why she had let me in.

Not Damian.

Damian's reasons I understood n

The solicitor arrived at nine on Thursday morning.Small man.Gray coat.Briefcase.He asked for me by name at the front door and produced an envelope with the practiced efficiency of someone completing a task assigned a long time ago."My client left instructions," he said."That this be delivered personally.""Upon a specific set of circumstances being met.""What circumstances?" I asked. He looked at the envelope."That she be found.""That you be safe.""And that the child be safe."He paused."She was very specific.""All three conditions before delivery."I took the envelope. He left without another word.I didn't open it immediately.I sat with it in the small room overlooking the east wing. The two-chair room.Lily's voice drifting up from the garden.Mara's low answer. The ordinary sounds of a morning deciding to be ordinary. The envelope was cream colored. My name on the front in handwriting I hadn't seen in eight years.Carried in the body before it reaches the mind.I open

Sandra called back at four while I was in the garden with Lily. The beetle had returned, or a different beetle; Lily maintained it was the same one, and I didn't argue. My phone vibrated in my pocket, and when I saw Sandra's name, I told Lily, "Stay here. I'll be just over there," before moving three steps away, close enough to see her but far enough that she wouldn't hear."Tell me," I said.Sandra didn't preamble. She never did when it mattered."Eleanor Marsh is a name used on three separate documents over the last eight years. A bank account, a lease on a property in the south of France, and a medical registration at a private clinic outside Lyon."I held the phone very still against my ear. "The clinic. What clinic?""A small private facility specializing in neurological research." A pause. "Connected to the Voss Foundation through two intermediary companies.""She's working for Voss," I said. It wasn't a question."She has been for eight years.""Since her death.""Since she dis

The call came at nine fifteen.Walsh.Her voice had the particular flatness of someone delivering news they had been awake all night preparing for.“We have a problem.”I was in the corridor outside the kitchen. Lily’s voice drifted behind me, asking Mara something about beetles while Mara answered in her low, careful voice. The ordinary sounds of a morning that had decided to remain ordinary despite everything happening around it.“What kind of problem?” I asked.“Voss.”I had expected it.“She’s gone.”I closed my eyes briefly.“When?”“Sometime last night. Between eleven and two. Her residence in the city was cleared. Not quickly. Not in a panic. Methodically. Like someone who had been prepared to leave for a very long time and was simply waiting for the signal.”I thought about Clara Benson. Marcus Reed. The east wing door that hadn't been fully closed. The four words added to Mara’s notebook. She knows you’re here. The signal had gone out before we were ready.“Victoria’s arrest,

Lily chose three stories. She always chose three. One for each stuffed animal. The rabbit got the longest one.She sat between us on the bed — me on the left, Damian on the right — with the rabbit in her lap and her serious face on, the one she wore when something important was happening and she wanted to make sure she remembered it properly.I read the first story.Damian read the second. His voice doing something different from his usual voice.Less controlled.More human. The voice of a man who had been reading to a child for five years and had learned, somewhere in those five years, that this was the one place in his life where performance served no purpose.Lily listened to both with complete attention. Then she chose the third story herself and placed it in my hands.I read it.She fell asleep before the last page. The way she always did.Somewhere between the second-to-last sentence and the final one.As though sleep had been waiting for exactly that moment.I finished the page

DI Clare Walsh was not what I expected. She was small.Compact.With close-cropped hair and the particular economy of movement of someone who had learned not to waste anything. She came through the front door and looked at the entrance hall of Blackwood Manor the way she probably looked at every room she entered.Like evidence.Like something that would eventually have to be explained. She looked at Damian."Mr. Blackwood.""Detective Inspector."Then she looked at me."Miss Sterling.""Yes."She looked at Lily pressed against my side. Her expression didn't change. But something in it softened.Very slightly. The professional version of acknowledging something that mattered."Is there somewhere we can talk?" she said."All of us."We used the study. The room that had held three years of Damian's investigation. That had been entered and violated and partially emptied by someone working against us.That now held the USB drive and the birth certificate and the photograph of Dr. Amelia Vo

  • I Returned As The Nanny To The Daughter They Stole From Me    Chapter 21. Victoria Blackwood

She arrived at seven. Not in the quiet way of someone making a social call.In the way of someone who owned the ground they walked on.A black car.Long.Expensive without trying to advertise it.A driver who opened the door without being asked. And Victoria Blackwood stepping out with the composed precision of a woman who had spent sixty-two years perfecting the art of arriving.I watched from the first floor landing window. She was tall.Silver-haired in the way that suggested it had always been silver.Dressed in dark clothes that were expensive in the way that didn't need to announce itself. She looked up at the manor as she crossed the drive. Not warmly. The assessing look of someone confirming that things were as they should be.Then she went inside.I had forty minutes before she reached Lily.We had planned for thirty.Mrs. Hayes was managing the entrance hall.Damian was in his study.Dr. Moore and Mara were in the guest room at the far end of the north corridor.Invisible.S
