Chapter 23. What Remains

last update publish date: 2026-09-12 00:28:03

Lily chose three stories.

She always chose three.

One for each stuffed animal.

The rabbit got the longest one.

She sat between us on the bed — me on the left, Damian on the right — with the rabbit in her lap and her serious face on, the one she wore when something important was happening and she wanted to make sure she remembered it properly.

I read the first story.

Damian read the second.

His voice doing something different from his usual voice.

Less controlled.

More human.

The voice of a man

The call came at nine fifteen.Walsh.Her voice had the particular flatness of someone delivering news they had been awake all night preparing for.“We have a problem.”I was in the corridor outside the kitchen. Lily’s voice drifted behind me, asking Mara something about beetles while Mara answered in her low, careful voice. The ordinary sounds of a morning that had decided to remain ordinary despite everything happening around it.“What kind of problem?” I asked.“Voss.”I had expected it.“She’s gone.”I closed my eyes briefly.“When?”“Sometime last night. Between eleven and two. Her residence in the city was cleared. Not quickly. Not in a panic. Methodically. Like someone who had been prepared to leave for a very long time and was simply waiting for the signal.”I thought about Clara Benson. Marcus Reed. The east wing door that hadn't been fully closed. The four words added to Mara’s notebook. She knows you’re here. The signal had gone out before we were ready.“Victoria’s arrest,

  • I Returned As The Nanny To The Daughter They Stole From Me    Chapter 22. The Door Opens

DI Clare Walsh was not what I expected. She was small.Compact.With close-cropped hair and the particular economy of movement of someone who had learned not to waste anything. She came through the front door and looked at the entrance hall of Blackwood Manor the way she probably looked at every room she entered.Like evidence.Like something that would eventually have to be explained. She looked at Damian."Mr. Blackwood.""Detective Inspector."Then she looked at me."Miss Sterling.""Yes."She looked at Lily pressed against my side. Her expression didn't change. But something in it softened.Very slightly. The professional version of acknowledging something that mattered."Is there somewhere we can talk?" she said."All of us."We used the study. The room that had held three years of Damian's investigation. That had been entered and violated and partially emptied by someone working against us.That now held the USB drive and the birth certificate and the photograph of Dr. Amelia Vo

  • I Returned As The Nanny To The Daughter They Stole From Me    Chapter 21. Victoria Blackwood

She arrived at seven. Not in the quiet way of someone making a social call.In the way of someone who owned the ground they walked on.A black car.Long.Expensive without trying to advertise it.A driver who opened the door without being asked. And Victoria Blackwood stepping out with the composed precision of a woman who had spent sixty-two years perfecting the art of arriving.I watched from the first floor landing window. She was tall.Silver-haired in the way that suggested it had always been silver.Dressed in dark clothes that were expensive in the way that didn't need to announce itself. She looked up at the manor as she crossed the drive. Not warmly. The assessing look of someone confirming that things were as they should be.Then she went inside.I had forty minutes before she reached Lily.We had planned for thirty.Mrs. Hayes was managing the entrance hall.Damian was in his study.Dr. Moore and Mara were in the guest room at the far end of the north corridor.Invisible.S

  • I Returned As The Nanny To The Daughter They Stole From Me    Chapter 20. One More Day

I checked on Lily at midnight. She was asleep. Exactly as promised. The rabbit tucked under one arm. The three stuffed animals in their specific arrangement. Her dark hair spread across the pillow. Her face smooth and certain in the way it always was in sleep. As though even unconscious she had decided the world was manageable. I stood in the doorway and watched her breathe. One more day. Then this would be over. Or it would become something else entirely. Either way — tomorrow Lily's life changed. And she didn't know it yet. I pressed my hand flat against the doorframe. Then I went to bed. She was at my door at six twenty-eight. As always. Pale blue pajamas. Rabbit. That face. She looked at me for a long moment. "You slept," she said. "A little." "More than before." "Your face is different." I crouched to her level. "Lily." "Yes?" "Today is going to be a normal day." She studied me. "Is it?" "Yes." "Breakfast and readin

  • I Returned As The Nanny To The Daughter They Stole From Me    Chapter 19. what Mara Knew

We brought them in through the service entrance. The east wing corridor was dark and quiet.Dr. Moore moved through it like someone who had done it before.Because she had.Mara walked beside me.She didn't look at the locked door as we passed it.She looked straight ahead. The deliberate not-looking of someone who has decided they are done looking at something.I had expected her to want to go inside. To stand in the room again. To touch the things she had left behind. She didn't.She walked past the door without breaking stride and I understood. She had already said goodbye to that room.Four years ago on a Tuesday morning. She wasn't going back.Damian was waiting in the study.Standing.Not at the window. Not at the desk.Just standing in the middle of the room. When the door opened and Mara walked in he went very still. The complete absolute stillness I had only seen in him once before. The night he had pressed his hand against the east wing door.Mara stopped two feet inside the
