Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
Stephanie stared at me with such intensity that it felt like she would tear me apart the moment I refused. I hesitated, then finally nodded, even though my mind was filled with questions.

The second I agreed, Mom carefully placed the earrings she always carried with her on the dining table. Stephanie reached for them in excitement, but Mom slapped her hand away. "Thank Irene first. These earrings were originally hers. If she hadn't agreed, you wouldn't even be allowed to touch them."

Stephanie forced out a stiff thank you, then happily put on the earrings.

"Irene, don't be sad. I'll buy you an even better pair," Mom said.

I studied Stephanie closely. Why wasn't she reacting at all? Did that mean the Soul-Sworn Earrings from my previous life had been fake?

A few days later, Mom mysteriously called me into her room. "Irene, try these on. This pair is even better than Stephanie's."

The moment I saw the earrings inside the box, a chill ran through me. They were identical to hers.

Mom noticed my confusion and began explaining, "Both pairs were crafted by the same jeweler. Of course, they look the same. This pair simply uses better materials."

She suddenly leaned close to my ear. "You're a star. Naturally, you deserve to wear the finest."

The smile on her face only grew more unsettling, and I shivered despite myself.

"Don't just stand there. Try them on and let me take a look," she urged.

I took a deep breath to steady myself. Every instinct told me something was terribly wrong. Mom kept urging me, and when she finally reached out to put them on me herself, a scream from outside saved me.

Mom dropped the earrings and rushed out.

"Stephanie, what happened?"

Stephanie's hands were trembling as she held out a pregnancy test.

"Mrs. Quinton, I'm pregnant. You're going to be a grandmother."

Mom stared at the test for what felt like forever, and finally, tears welled in her eyes. Stephanie's eyes were brimming with tears as well.

As I watched the two of them celebrate, everything fell into place. Stephanie's pair had to be fake. The earrings Mom wanted me to wear were the real Soul-Sworn Earrings.

I didn't understand. Why would she do this to me?

However, the slap of reality came quickly. The results from the hospital had arrived that morning. She wasn't my biological mother.

Questions flooded my mind, and I locked myself in my room, going over every detail from the past weeks. I still didn't know whose daughter I really was, but at last, I understood why Mom had been so desperate to use me to swap fates with her.

As I walked past Mom's room that night, I heard her talking with Charlie.

"Charlie, now that Stephanie is pregnant, there are things you need to know about this family. I had a reason for refusing her the earrings she wanted before. I had them made by a jeweler, and he told me that if I wanted someone's life, I had to put the earrings on her. As long as Irene wore them, I could swap my life with hers. Not only her beauty, but even her fortune would transfer to me."

A cold wave surged from my feet to my scalp, but I forced myself to keep listening.

"I already swapped the earrings. Once she puts them on, she won't last a week."

My entire body trembled.

"What are you doing?"

I spun around and found Stephanie standing behind me without me noticing.

She opened her mouth to call for someone, but I clamped a hand over her lips.

"Don't scream," I whispered. "I'll tell you a secret."

The police took Mom and Charlie back to the station. During questioning, they still wore the same arrogant expressions, even daring to challenge the officers as if they hadn't committed any crime. Some people never learned until they were faced with death. The police played the surveillance footage I had prepared in front of them.In the video, they were tormenting Stephanie every moment, and in the final scene, Charlie delivered the fatal kick.I accompanied the police to exhume Stephanie's body and bring it back for testing. The results confirmed she had been poisoned for a long time. Every piece of evidence pointed to them as her killers. With no way out, they slumped in their chairs and refused to cooperate, convinced they could escape justice. How foolish.I entered the interrogation room again. This time, it wasn't surveillance footage but a dashcam recording from ten years ago. My parents' deaths had never been an accident. It was Lydia, with her cruel heart, who had delibe

When I woke up the next morning, I realized the earrings were already in my ears.Mom looked at me with satisfaction. "Sweetie, you look good in everything."I smiled and played along. "It's just your great taste."For days, Mom's eyes seemed glued to me, as if she didn't want to miss the slightest change.A week passed, and not only did nothing happen, but I actually became more beautiful.Mom looked a little scared, yet after checking again and again, she confirmed that the earrings I wore were indeed the Soul‑Sworn Earrings."Mom, why are you sitting on the couch in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?"She held a mirror and turned to me slowly. "Irene, am I getting old?"I let out a soft laugh. "Mom, are you sure you're not the one who had her life swapped?"Mom stared at me in panic. "Aren't you wearing the earrings?"Who said the ones on my ears were real? When I dragged Stephanie inside that day, I used that moment to switch them out. I put the fake pair back

A month later, I returned home. The moment I saw Stephanie, I almost gagged. Her body had shriveled into a frail, sunken frame, yet her stomach bulged unnaturally high. A few thin strands of hair clung to her scalp, and the only thing still shining on her was that pair of earrings, glinting grotesquely against her hollowed face."Mom, what happened to Stephanie?"Mom didn't react. She lifted Stephanie carefully and continued feeding her soup. "The doctor said the baby is just too active. It's nothing to worry about. Once she gives birth, everything will be fine."I forced down my nausea and went to my room. Later that night, a faint knock came at the door. When I opened it, Stephanie was sprawled on the floor, gasping for breath. She tried to stand when she saw me, but her legs gave out. I had to drag her inside."What is it?" I asked.Stephanie's eyes were wild with panic. "Your mom lied. She never took me to a doctor. Irene, I'm begging you, please take me to a hospital. I can

Mom's hands trembled as she saw the nervous look on my face. I embellished everything I had overheard outside their bedroom, making it sound far worse than it was.Just as I expected, Mom nearly had a fit, and her breath came in short, sharp gasps. It took her several long minutes to calm down.Just as she was about to go confront Stephanie, I grabbed her and pulled her back into the room."Are you out of your mind? If you charge in there like that, Charlie will never be able to hold his head up again.""She's daring because she's counting on Charlie being too embarrassed to speak up," I added, watching her carefully. After a pause, her gaze darkened as she looked at me. "Give me the earrings from before. I'll use them for a few days and then return them to you."Was Mom really planning to teach Stephanie a lesson? I handed her the earrings with a bright smile. "Mom, even though Stephanie made a mistake, she and Charlie have been together for years. Some feelings can't just be un

Mom was trapped between the two of them, and eventually her eyes landed on me. "You must have told her on purpose. You're nothing but trouble. You just want this family torn apart."If she hadn't been scheming in the first place, none of this would have happened.I sat up straight on the couch. "If you really think I'm the problem, I can move out. Then the three of you can live in peace."I pulled out my phone as if I were about to call my assistant.Mom immediately panicked and hurried over with an embarrassed smile. "Why would you move out? Everything's fine at home. I just said something stupid. Don't take it seriously."Mom looked like she was in agony. On one side, Stephanie was threatening to end her pregnancy, and on the other, I was threatening to move out.Stephanie pressed on relentlessly. "Have you made up your mind? If you don't bring me the real earrings, I swear I'll get rid of the baby."Time dragged until Stephanie finally stood. "Fine. You wasted your chance."

  • I Returned to Rewrite Her Ending   Chapter 5

Stephanie stared at me in terror, though she didn't make a sound. I brought her back to my room and said, "Your earrings are fake. Mom did it because she wants to push you into marrying Charlie as soon as possible."Stephanie didn't believe a word of it. "Don't think I don't see what you're trying to do. You just want to stir up trouble between me and Mrs. Quinton. I'm not falling for it."I didn't argue. Instead, I showed her the video from earlier, the one where Mom had dragged me into her room to try on the earrings. Ever since I'd come back to life, I'd kept a tiny pinhole camera on me for moments exactly like this.Stephanie finished watching the video. It didn't show anything explicit, but the slight tremor in her hand gave her away."I used to think you meant everything to Mom, but she handed you a fake pair of earrings like it was nothing. Do you know what else I heard? I heard her say that once the baby is born, she's throwing you out," I said.Stephanie sat frozen at the
