Mom's hands trembled as she saw the nervous look on my face. I embellished everything I had overheard outside their bedroom, making it sound far worse than it was.

Just as I expected, Mom nearly had a fit, and her breath came in short, sharp gasps. It took her several long minutes to calm down.

Just as she was about to go confront Stephanie, I grabbed her and pulled her back into the room.

"Are you out of your mind? If you charge in there like that, Charlie will never be able to hold his head up again."

"She's daring because she's counting on Charlie being too embarrassed to speak up," I added, watching her carefully.

After a pause, her gaze darkened as she looked at me. "Give me the earrings from before. I'll use them for a few days and then return them to you."
