Chapter 2

Penulis: Zoe bear
When I pushed open the door, Jareth was standing in the middle of the living room.

He hadn’t turned on the lights, and the glow from his phone screen lit up half of his face.

“Back already?” He looked up.

“Mm.” I took off my shoes, the heels tapping against the floor with a muffled sound.

“How was the concert?” he asked.

His tone was emotionless, but I knew he was waiting for my reaction.

“It was okay.” I threw my bag on the couch. The body trembled slightly, and the heart was beating violently.

His hand froze in midair, and his face darkened.

“How’s your mom?” I asked.

“She’s better, sleeping now.” He tugged at his tie, his tone softening. “Sorry I couldn’t be with you.”

“It’s fine.”

I walked into the bedroom and unbuttoned my shirt.

He followed me, leaning against the doorframe, watching me.

“Want to?” I turned around and looked him straight in the eye.

He froze for a moment, then smiled.

In his eyes, I saw nothing but desire, not love.

“You’re the one making the move?” He raised an eyebrow, stepping closer.

“Mm.”

I took off my coat and threw it on the floor.

I unbuttoned my shirt, one button, then another.

He rushed over and pinned me against the wall.

The kiss was full of punishment, biting my lips until they hurt.

I closed my eyes, not wanting to look at his face.

In my mind, all I could see was the image on the big screen — the tenderness in his eyes when he kissed Lily, it was enough to drown someone.

“Look at me.” He grabbed my chin, his grip so tight it felt like it might break.

I opened my eyes, staring blankly at him.

In the dark, he suddenly pulled me into his arms, trembling all over.

“Leina,” his voice choked, “don’t leave me.”

“You’re my only anchor. Without you, I’ll just drift away.”

He’d said this to me many times before.

When his bipolar disorder flared up and he smashed the mirrors in the house.

When he had a fallout with investors and got drunk out of his mind.

I used to believe him, gently patting his back and saying, “I’m here.”

Now, I only find it laughable.

I opened the chat labeled “Sweetheart.”

Scrolling up, there was an overwhelming amount of inappropriate flirtatious messages.

“She’s like a piece of wood, not as exciting as you.”

“That cold finance robot, she’s only useful when doing calculations.”

“Once I handle her, I’ll go public with us.”

My heart felt like it was being gripped by a cold hand, slowly tightening.

I clicked on a video.

The scene was in a hotel room. Lily was wearing my silk robe — the one Jareth had given me for my birthday.

Jareth was kneeling in front of her, looking up and kissing her knee.

“Such a good girl.” His voice was so gentle it could melt, “Do you like this robe? I bought it just for you.”

Lily smiled, stroking his hair. “Wouldn’t it look better on her?”

“She doesn’t deserve it.”

I turned off the phone and threw it back on the bedside table.

No sound, no tears.

Nothing at all.

Once, his approach filled me with joy; now, it only brings weariness and disgust.

I shifted to the edge of the bed, avoiding him.

The rain stopped, and the sky was just beginning to lighten.I stuffed the last piece of evidence into an envelope.Inside were the ledgers of Jareth’s financial fraud, the bank statements showing Lily’s embezzlement of funds, and the hospital diagnosis of the employee Jareth injured during one of his manic episodes.Every page was soaked in the absurdities of these past years.“Is everything ready?” Eli asked on the phone.“Mm.” I picked up the file, “Heading to the police station.”At the police station entrance, Charles was waiting for me.He was holding a petition from the employees, signed by many.“Everyone who’s been bullied by him wants to testify.”“Thanks for your hard work.”The officer reviewing the documents furrowed his brow deeper as he flipped through the pages.“These pieces of evidence are enough to put them behind bars for life,” he looked up at me. “We’ll need you to testify in person.”“Okay.” I looked at him. “I want to watch them pay for what they’ve done.”When

The heavy rain beat against the floor-to-ceiling windows. My phone vibrated. It was security: "Ivy, there’s someone downstairs saying they need to see you, we can’t stop him.""Who?""He says his name is Jareth."I closed the file and stood up.Mark looked up. “It’s so late. I’ll go down with you.”“No need.”In the elevator, the mirror reflected my calm face.Jareth coming wasn’t a surprise.Right now, the only thing left for him to do is beg me.Jareth was kneeling in the puddle, his body covered in wounds. His right arm was in a cast, his face wrapped in bandages, with blood seeping through. In his hands, he held a sign that read "I was wrong," the writing blurred by the rain. When he saw me, he suddenly crawled toward me, his knees dragging two wet streaks on the ground."Leina!" He shouted, his voice breaking apart in the rain, "I know it was you!"I took a step back, avoiding his hand.“Jareth’s got the wrong person.”"Stop pretending!" He grabbed my leg, his grip frighteningly s

The day after Jareth’s company shut down, I received an anonymous package.Inside was a thick ledger and a note: “Please let me go, I know I was wrong.”The handwriting was crooked — it was Lily’s.I flipped through the ledger, and on the first page, the date was written — six years ago, a full year earlier than the financial fraud I knew about.Every falsified entry was clearly documented, and Jareth’s signature was on each one."Eli, check on Lily’s recent movements." I took a photo to keep a record, my finger brushing over the page titled “Embezzlement of Funds.”Half an hour later, Eli sent a message: “Lily found out Jareth blamed everything on her. She cried all night at the bar.”“Expected.”The ledger contained a recording pen.I pressed play, and Lily’s cries pierced the air: “Jareth, you can’t do this to me! Those accounts were your idea!”Jareth’s voice was cold: “Where’s the evidence? Now everyone knows it’s you who embezzled the funds.”“You promised you would marry me!”“F

Three days after the celebration banquet, Eli sent a message: “Jareth is investigating you.”“Expected.” I replied while looking at the business plan Charles, the employee Jareth forced out, had sent me.His name was Charles, and back then, he refused to help Jareth with falsifying financial records, so he was falsely accused of leaking secrets and forced to leave that very night.I invested startup funds into his company, and now it was thriving.“He found out you funded Charles,” Eli sent another message.“Let him check.”In the afternoon, Mark handed me a letter of termination.“Jareth is behind this, claiming we used unethical methods to poach his clients.”“Normal.” I signed the termination letter. “The more desperate he is, the quicker he’ll collapse.”Before the end of the workday, Eli called. The background noise was loud.“Jareth found my clinic,” his voice was low. “He knows about my sister.”Eli’s sister had developed severe depression after being harassed by Jareth.“What d

The champagne at the celebration banquet was sickly sweet.I stood in the corner, holding my glass. Mark walked over. "Jareth’s here, with Lily.""Expected."His company was on the brink of collapse, and yet he still showed up to save face.Lily was dressed like a peacock in full display, her red gown glittering painfully in the light. She was arm-in-arm with Jareth, weaving through the crowd, laughing like a flower swaying in the wind.People pointed at me, and Lily’s gaze swept over, filled with hostility.Jareth also saw me and paused in his steps."Jareth, long time no see." I raised my glass."Ivy, the consultant." He tugged at his tie.Lily suddenly smiled. "Ivy, where did you work before?""Doesn’t matter.""Why doesn’t it matter?" She leaned closer to Jareth, "Our Jareth has a wide network.""Oh? Does he know any accountants who embezzle funds to cover up their lover’s debt?"Jareth’s face changed. Lily froze. "You’re lying!"I snapped my fingers, and the big screen in the banq

The air conditioning in the meeting room was a little cold, so I tugged at my suit sleeves.Mark knocked on the table. “Let’s begin.”Jareth’s gaze swept over me but didn’t linger.Of course, with this new face, even Clara had stared for three minutes when she first saw me.“This is Ivy, our strategic consultant,” Mark introduced.Jareth nodded and extended his hand. “Nice to meet you.”I shook his fingertips. They were cold.“Jareth.”He pulled his hand back and lowered his head, flipping through the acquisition agreement, his pen spinning between his fingers. That pen was our three-year anniversary gift. The cap was engraved with our initials. He used to say, “I’ll use this for signing big contracts, and when I propose, I’ll use it too.”But now, these words have become so laughable.“The price is unreasonable.” He suddenly spoke, pointing to a line, “The premium is too high.”“Jareth knows better,” I opened another document, “your company’s financial hole is worth this price.” I put
