The knock came again.

Irene looked down. Her shorts were on the floor. So were her panties.

“Kael.”

He followed her stare.

“Pick those up.”

He smiled before bending to gather both pieces and handed them over. Irene pulled them on as fast as she could, tightening the drawstring.

The knock came a third time.

“Who is it?”

Kael shrugged. “Probably Rowe.”

“Probably?”

He reached for a towel.

Irene stared at him. “You should wipe your mouth.”

His smile widened. “You’re welcome.” Then he wiped his mout

“Okay. Your nightmare vacation is officially over.”The second Irene reached her room, she went straight to Mr. Mustard’s tank.Ares came in behind her while Irene carefully reached into her pocket and pulled out Mr. Mustard.Somehow, the turtle had survived her apartment getting attacked, being carried through the woods on the back of a giant wolf, two days at Kael’s lodge, several miles underground, and a motel.Mr. Mustard looked exactly as impressed by all of that as he usually looked by everything.“Don’t give me that face. I had a worse time.”She lowered him into his tank. For the first time since she had climbed onto Kael’s back, Irene felt one small part of her life return to where it belonged.Mr. Mustard immediately started moving around his familiar space.“There you go.”Ares stood beside her, watching him. “He appears unchanged.”“Oh, well, he’s a turtle.”Irene watched Mr. Mustard for another moment before straightening. “I think he handled all of this better than I did

“Those are his cars.”Three black vehicles waited in an empty industrial lot ahead, their headlights throwing long white beams across the pavement. Six men stood beside them in dark trench coats, two to each car, armed and very obviously not there for decoration.Irene looked past them at the warehouses surrounding the lot. Most were dark for the evening, their loading bays empty and chain-link fences throwing crooked shadows across the ground.“Where’s Ares?” she said.Rowe glanced through the windshield. “He’s probably in one of those cars. Waiting.”He told the driver to pull directly in front of the waiting cars.Irene sat back and watched them get closer. She had spent most of the drive telling herself that seeing Ares again was just another problem she needed to deal with. She would explain what happened, call her family, figure out what remained of her apartment, and hopefully find out whether she still had her jobs.Their car stopped and Rowe got out first, and Irene followed

“You’re squeezing my hand.”Irene looked down and realized Kael had taken her hand sometime after they left the motel. She had been too busy staring through the tinted window to notice how hard she was holding on.“Sorry.”He kept his fingers around hers. “What’s wrong?”They had been driving through Moorwen territory for a while now, with the motel’s sign, NEON, long behind them and thick woods now crowding both sides of the road. Every so often a gravel turnoff disappeared between the trees, but there were few buildings and even fewer people. The Moorwen territory was beautiful. It was also full of wolves who apparently thought their Alpha ending up mated to a human was some kind of humiliation.“Nothing,” she said. “I’m just enjoying a peaceful drive through enemy territory.”“This is not enemy territory.”“Your pack doesn’t like me.”“They don’t know you.”“That hasn’t stopped them from having opinions.”Kael glanced toward the window before looking back at her. “You’re with me.”

The door at the top of the stairs opened into the floor of a motel room.Irene climbed the last few steps behind Kael and stared at the bed sitting barely six feet away.“You have got to be kidding me.”Kael caught her hand and helped her through the opening. Once she was standing, he lowered the heavy panel behind them and pressed it into place. The edges disappeared neatly into the flooring, hidden well enough that Irene probably could have stayed in the room for a week without realizing there was a tunnel underneath it.She looked around.Nothing about the place suggested secret underground access to an Alpha’s private lodge. There was a double bed with a brown comforter, two bedside tables, a television mounted opposite it, blackout curtains, and a small bathroom near the entrance. Someone had even put the usual laminated motel information beside the phone.“This is Room 000?”Kael nodded.“And people stay in here?”“No one stays in here.”That made considerably more sense.Irene

“Walk in front of me.”Irene stopped.Kael had been several steps ahead of her since they left the lodge, his broad back the only thing she had looked at besides the stone walls and the wrought-iron sconces lighting the tunnel.“What?”“Go ahead.”“I don’t know where I’m going.”“It’s one tunnel. You’ll hit stairs eventually.”That was the most he had said to her since they left.Irene stepped around him.The silence had been bad enough when she was following him. Having him behind her somehow made it worse. Not that long ago, Kael had been between her legs at the kitchen counter. Before that, the lake. Before that, the bed.Now they were walking underground without speaking because she had told him to take her back to her husband. There was apparently no graceful transition between those things.Irene glanced over her shoulder. Kael was watching the ground ahead of him, expression closed.Guilt had been creeping up on her since they left the lodge. She was not pretending anymore that

If it’s Rowe, he already knows you’re my mate.”“That does not mean I want your beta thinking why it took us five minutes to answer.”“Rowe can think whatever he wants.”“Kael.”“Fine.”Kael sighed and crossed the room. When he opened the door, Rowe stood outside. His eyes moved once from Kael to Irene, then toward the kitchen.Kael stepped aside, and whatever amusement R
