“Shit.”

Irene jerked her hand away from the espresso machine and looked at the red spot forming along the side of her finger.

Perfect.

It wasn’t even ten yet.

She ran it under cold water for a few seconds, dried her hand on her apron, and went straight back to the drinks waiting on the counter.

That morning, work had been busy enough that she barely had time to think, which suited her just fine. Orders came in; she made them.

Irene could deal with that. After last night, she was suddenly very g

Irene just hadn’t expected six marriages.Six human women who had once called themselves Lady Valcieri and eventually died while Ares went on living.Ruthven had been watching her closely enough to catch the surprise.“You didn’t know?”“No.”“How curious.”Ares’s voice cooled. “My previous marriages were not relevant to our courtship.”Irene was still looking at him.Six human wives who had presumably grown old while Ares stayed exactly as he was.Ruthven leaned back slightly. “Does that trouble you, Lady Valcieri?”Irene looked at him again. There was the question he actually wanted answered. She took a small drink before speaking.“He’s a vampire. I’m human. He’s going to outlive me. That part isn’t exactly a surprise.”Ares’s gaze shifted to her.“How easily you accept that.”Ruthven’s gaze stayed on her.Irene continued, “All I’m saying is that, if you live as long as he has, I don’t think it’s strange that there were other people before me.”She glanced at Ares.“He’ll probably

Ares waited until Irene had finished breakfast before telling her that a coven wanted to inspect their marriage. She had just taken the last sip of coffee when he said, “Blackveil secured a formal audience for Thursday.”Irene lowered the cup. “That sounds bad.”“It is inconvenient.”Ares sat behind the desk in his study, reading something on a tablet.Irene stayed in the chair across from him.“What does 'formal audience' mean?”“Dinner.”“That’s it?”“No.” Ares set the tablet down. “Lord Ruthven is hosting. Blackveil petitioned him to question the legitimacy of our marriage. He agreed to hear them.”Irene stared at him.“People can request an investigation into your marriage over dinner?”“People with enough influence can request almost anything.”“And Ruthven?”“Has enough power that refusing him would look bad than attending.”That did not make Irene feel better.“What exactly are they expecting us to do?”“Eat. Answer questions. Look married.” Irene made a face. “Look married?”

By the time Irene reached the third floor, the handles of the grocery bag had dug red marks into her fingers. She had stopped at the market after work because she was going to be home for two nights. The bag held mustard, bottled water, and a takeout container. So she had bought milk, eggs, bread, instant noodles, coffee, and three bananas because anything more ambitious would probably rot before she came back from the estate. She was trying to get her key into the lock when someone came up the stairs behind her.Kael said, “This building smells worse every time I come here.”Irene closed her eyes for a second. She had been home for maybe twelve seconds.“That’s nice. Hi.”Kael reached the landing and looked down the hallway with disgust. “You need another apartment.”Irene got the door open. “You offering to pay for one?”“Sure.”She rolled her eyes and went inside. Kael followed without being invited.Irene set the groceries on the counter and started putting them away. He stood behi

The next night, Irene lasted until a little after nine before deciding that avoiding Ares was worse than seeing him.She had spent most of the day telling herself she did not need an explanation for what she had seen. Ares had fed from someone. The man had agreed to it. Nobody had screamed. Nobody had died. That should have been enough.By dinner, Irene had caught herself staring at Ares’s mouth twice. Afterward, she walked toward the conservatory and found him there alone.Ares stood beside one of the long tables, sleeves pushed to his forearms, trimming a plant with a tiny pair of scissors. He looked up when she came in and set the scissors down.“Go on, dear wife, you can ask me about it.”“I wasn’t going to…”“But you came looking for me.” One corner of his mouth lifted. She walked farther into the room.Ares looked normal again. There were no fangs, no blood, and no black in his eyes.“Was he okay? That guy you were…” she struggled, “You know…sucking blood…feeding… whatever you c

Irene had eaten a burger during her convenience-store shift, so by the time she returned to the estate, she had no interest in dinner.Lena offered to have something sent upstairs anyway. Irene declined, went straight to her room, showered, changed into an old shirt and sleep shorts, and then felt tired but still not able to sleep.Everything she had read the night before kept coming back whenever she closed her eyes.Eventually, she shoved the blanket aside and got out of bed.The estate was quiet at that hour. She intended to go downstairs, get a glass of milk, maybe find something boring in the library, and then come back once her brain had tired itself out.Instead, she took the wrong corridor. She realized it almost immediately. The wallpaper was darker here, the rooms farther apart, and she didn’t recognize the paintings on the walls. She was about to turn around when she noticed light coming through a door near the end of the hall.It had been left slightly open. Then she heard

After last night, she was suddenly very grateful for these kind of problems. She reached for the next cup and tried not to think about Ares, or the fact that she had gone to bed angry with him and still spent far too long thinking about what he had said.Blythe slid a sleeve of lids onto the counter beside her. Then she looked at Irene.Irene kept working.Blythe was still looking.“What?”“Nothing.” Then Blythe’s eyes dropped briefly to Irene’s neck.Irene kept wiping down the steam wand, then glanced at her.Blythe smiled, but it fad
