Aiden's First-Person POV

I was ready to leave, so I got up and made my way to the fitting room to change back into my own clothes.

But Carter Hayes suddenly turned to my fiancee, Mabel Jones. His voice was tinged with hurt as he asked, "What am I supposed to do? Aiden must be mad at me."

"What, are you just going to say nothing?" Mabel snapped as she grabbed my arm. "Can't you see how guilty Carter feels over your stupid pants? Not one word? Really?"

Pain shot through my wrist, and I frowned at her. "First of all, they're not 'stupid pants'. This suit was custom-made overseas by my dad six months in advance. It's worth over 100 thousand dollars.

"Second, he ruined my pants and hasn't even apologized. What do you expect me to say? That it's fine?"

Mabel froze under my questioning, unable to say a word.

Seeing her reaction, Carter looked even more hurt. "This is all my fault. Don't blame Mabel. I'll fix your pants right now."

Without another word, he picked up a needle and tried to stitch the torn fabric back together. But after only a couple of clumsy attempts, the needle pricked his finger, and a bead of blood welled up.

Panicked, Mabel shoved me aside.

My back slammed into the edge of the table, and I collapsed to the floor. The pain was so intense that I couldn't even stand.

Mabel carefully took Carter's injured finger and brought it to her lips, sucking the blood.

He looked at her, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Mabel, am I really that useless? I can't even handle something this simple."

"Don't say that, Carter," Mabel said gently. "Everyone has their own strengths. You're not a tailor. It's only natural you wouldn't be good at sewing."

Then, she turned to me, her voice turning cold as she snapped, "This is all your fault! Why did you even have to come try on a suit? If it weren't for you, Carter wouldn't have gotten hurt. I want you to apologize to him now!"

The wedding was right around the corner. As the groom, was it really wrong for me to come try on my own suit?

Besides, I had only asked Mabel to come with me. Carter was the one who insisted on tagging along.

On top of that, he was the one who claimed my suit had loose threads and cut my pants. He was also the one who wanted to fix them. I hadn't said a single word.

Clearly, Mabel had already taken his side.

At this point, I had no interest in arguing with her anymore.

I slowly rose to my feet and looked at Carter. "I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I shouldn't have clung to her so stubbornly, and I shouldn't have fooled myself. I shouldn't have ever imagined marrying her. I'm giving her back to you. Is that enough?"

At my words, Mabel furrowed her brow, and her expression darkened. "Aiden Coleman! What are you talking about? Have you lost your mind? You're my fiance—"

Suddenly, Carter cried out, cutting her off. "Mabel, my finger hurts so bad. What if it gets infected? I'm not going to die, am I?"

"Don't worry, Carter. I won't let anything happen to you," she reassured him, her eyes full of concern. "I'll take you to the hospital now."

I watched as their figures disappeared from view, and only then did I let out a self-deprecating chuckle.

A beat later, I called my father. "Dad, I don't want to marry Mabel anymore. I've decided to move to New Bastia and live with you and Mom."

Mabel's parents, Frank Jones and Linda Walker, had watched me grow up. Over the years, they had always seen me as the right man for their daughter. After I walked away from my wedding, Frank and Linda had looked into it and found out that Carter was the reason. They went on to give Mabel a brutal dressing-down for it. They even supported her decision to follow me all the way to New Bastia. But what they never expected was that she'd end up carrying Carter's child. The pregnancy came out of nowhere. Both Frank and Linda knew Mabel shouldn't keep the baby, but they couldn't bring themselves to go through with the abortion. So, they had Carter come to New Bastia as well. They promised that if he could persuade Mabel to keep the baby, they would accept him as their son-in-law.I looked at Carter. He looked haggard, a far cry from the arrogant, high-spirited man he used to be. "You came to the wrong person. Whether Mabel goes back or not has nothing to do with me," I said."But s

Mabel added, "I promise I'll never see him again.""Couldn't let it go?" A mocking smile tugged at my lips as I continued, "Do you have any idea how much that hurt me? All those days I waited at home alone, I kept checking his social media account to look at everything you did with him. "You were my fiancee, and yet one phone call from him was all it took to pull you away—anytime, anywhere."You even let him get away with everything. He smashed the crystal glasses we made together and ruined the custom suit my dad made for me. "But now, you're telling me it was all because you couldn't let it go and that I'm the one you love? Mabel, don't you think that sounds absolutely ridiculous?"Under the weight of my words, Mabel slowly lowered her head. "I'm sorry, Aiden. Ever since we were kids, you were always by my side. Every time I turned around, you were right there, like you'd never leave. So, I thought this time would be the same. I'm sorry. I was selfish."I tilted my head sli

Was it because I had never been wanted or chosen that no one ever loved me?Mom was like that, and Mabel was the same.Just then, Mom pulled me into her arms, gently patting my back. Her voice choked with sobs as she said, "Aiden, I was wrong. I let myself get stuck in the past, and you suffered for it all these years. I could have hated anyone, but not you. You were the only innocent one in all of this."Over the years, she had slowly begun to let go of the past. She had wanted to mend our relationship, but she never knew how to start. I had built an invisible wall between us, and she couldn't get close."Aiden, can you forgive me?" Mom asked. "Let me make up for all the years I wasn't there, for all the love and time you missed out on."I didn't respond. Instead, I held her and cried for a long, long time. But I think she already knew the answer. …After that night, we finally opened our hearts to each other. The invisible wall between us began to crumble, and the bond we had

Aiden's First-Person POV12 hours later, the plane touched down in New Bastia. The seasons here were the opposite of those back home. It was winter, and the moment I stepped off the plane, the cold hit me. Luckily, I had come prepared. I took my down jacket from my suitcase and slipped it on.In the arrivals hall, I spotted Dad in the crowd right away. I ran straight to him, threw myself into his arms, and muttered, "I missed you so much, Dad."He patted my back, his voice soft with relief as he said, "You made it. Our family is finally together again."With that, I got into his car and went home with him.But when we got to the door, I hesitated, unable to go inside. I glanced at Dad and asked quietly, "Is Mom… doing okay?"Mom had severe depression. Whenever she saw me, she'd lose control and lash out in ways that hurt me. When I was little, she locked me in a closet and even threw me into a river. The worst time, she took me up to the roof and tried to push me off. Every

The recording looped several times before Mabel finally snapped out of her shock. She hurled the recorder to the ground and shouted, "That's impossible! You're lying! Aiden wanted to marry me more than anything! How could he just leave?"She then pulled out her phone and dialed Aiden's number. Yet, a mechanical voice answered, telling her she had been blocked. Furious, Mabel shoved the mannequin to the floor and stormed out, only to collide head-on with Carter, who was dressed in a black suit. He quickly grabbed her arm and asked, "Mabel, where are you going?"Panic surged through her as she shook him off. "Aiden's gone. I'm going to bring him back."There was no way Carter would let her leave. He had been planning for this for far too long, after all. He even went as far as pulling that stunt with the green suit the night before just to humiliate Aiden, all so he could win Mabel back. Carter had always believed Aiden loved Mabel so deeply that he'd swallow his pride and en

In an instant, panic flashed across Mabel's face. She turned to me and said, "Carter has night blindness. A blackout is dangerous for him. I have to go."This had happened more times than I could count. No matter how hard I tried to stop her, it had always been pointless. This time, I wasn't going to put myself through that again."Just drop me off at the next intersection," I said evenly. Mabel pulled over, and I stepped out with my suitcase. Guilt was etched across her face when she looked at me. "Aiden, it's hard to get a ride out here. Wait for me. I'll be right back."Wait for her? Hadn't I learned my lesson already?Still, I smiled and nodded. As soon as her car disappeared into traffic, I opened an app and booked a ride. …That night, Carter posted on Instagram. The caption read, "No matter what happens, as long as you're by my side, I feel safe."In the flickering candlelight, two silhouettes leaned against each other.I knew he had posted it just for me to see.
