Chapter 2

Autor: Liora Z
"Aria, do you know what a Donna is?"

Seraphina tossed the tablet in front of me.

On the screen was a photo of Cassandra playing Chopin at a family charity gala. White dress, black piano. The old lady sat in the front row, smiling so wide her wrinkles bloomed like a flower.

"The de Santis family has only cared about one thing for three hundred years: Tradition." Her nails tapped the desk. "Whoever wins the old lady's heart becomes the next Donna, the supreme matriarch."

"You're pregnant," I said.

"The kid will be born a de Santis. Will it take my last name?" She sneered. "Last week, the old lady said in front of seven elders—'If Seraphina doesn't shape up, send her back to where she came from.'"

I gasped.

"Cassandra is a Viti daughter. Learned piano at six, entered the conservatory at twelve, speaks Italian better than the Pope." Seraphina turned pale. "And me? I cross myself wrong at Holy Name mass."

She grabbed my hands. Her eyes were genuinely red.

"She's playing the piano at next week's dinner. Aria, listen to me about that fifty grand. Twenty grand to bribe a servant to spill a whole glass of red wine on her. Twenty grand to bribe a cleaner to oil the stairs she walks up. Do whatever with the remaining ten. I want her to break her precious neck in front of the whole family."

She looked at me, her eyes full of trust.

"I only trust you with this."

I stayed silent for three seconds.

"Relax," I said. "Leave it to me."

That night, I deposited $49,990 into my secret stash.

It wasn't that I didn't want to do it.

I just did the math.

Bribe a servant? They might snitch.

Oil the stairs? Might not be fatal, and leaves evidence.

The worst part?

It's expensive.

The stage to get wine spilled on was given by the old lady.

The stairs to slip on were given by the old lady.

If the old lady didn't show up, Cassandra was nothing.

I went to the pharmacy and bought a bottle of Ipecac syrup.

Ten bucks.

On the night of the dinner, the estate was brightly lit.

Cassandra arrived first.

A burgundy gown. The emerald necklace on her neck was heavy enough to choke a man.

She walked past me with champagne, stopped, and looked me up and down.

"Miss Wax Figure." She smirked. "Tonight, I've prepared the Revolutionary Etude. The old lady's favorite. After this piece, your pregnant little friend can pack her bags."

"Break a leg," I smiled with genuine sincerity.

Seraphina sat in the corner, palms sweating.

"Where's the servant?" She whispered. "Where's the wine?"

"Chill."

Eight o'clock. The old lady's seat was empty.

Eight-thirty. Still empty.

Cassandra's fingers kept tapping her knees, neck stretched long, eyes glued to the staircase.

Nine o'clock. The butler announced dinner.

The old lady still hadn't shown.

Cassandra shot up from her seat. "Where's Nonna? She promised to hear me play!"

Nobody answered her.

Seraphina pinched my thigh under the table. "What's going on? Where are your people? Where's the oil?"

I gave a sheepish smile.

"I thought bribing servants was a waste of money." I whispered. "Ten-dollar Ipecac syrup. Solved it at the root."

Seraphina's face cracked.

"You put what into whose cup?!"

"The old lady's afternoon tea."

"Aria, are you fucking in—"

A scream came from upstairs.

A maid stumbled down the stairs. "Something's wrong with the old lady! In the third-floor bathroom! She threw up and passed out!"

The whole table sprang up.

Cassandra was the first to rush up, hiking her dress to her knees, heels clicking faster than anyone else's.

"Nonna! I'm coming! Hang in there, Nonna—"

She pushed the bathroom door open.

Then she bounced back three steps and hit the wall.

A sour, rotten stench—like a Chicago dumpster in July—hit us like a brick wall.

The old lady was slumped by the sink, ashen-faced. Her expensive silk nightgown, the marble floor, the walls... it was a total disaster zone, covered in nauseating vomit.

Cassandra covered her mouth, dry-heaving twice till tears came out.

"God... oh my God..." She backed away, waving her hands. "Get... get a doctor! Get the nanny! Somebody come quickly! How can I be expected to—"

Before she could finish her "expected to do this as a guest" sentence.

The old lady's cloudy eyes looked up and saw the absolute disgust on her face.

Dead silence.

I grabbed Seraphina's arm and shoved her toward the door.

"Here's your chance! Go!"

"Bought off for 500k?!"Nonna clutched her chest, nearly having a heart attack on the spot. The nurse curled into a ball, begging for her life.Seraphina immediately took the real baby from my arms. She swayed on her feet and collapsed perfectly against Caspian, her delicate face pressing into his violently heaving chest."Caspian, she's so evil!" Seraphina cried, looking devastatingly beautiful in her tears. "She knows you can't have another child. She wanted to end your bloodline completely! If it wasn't for Aria today, our baby would have been disposed of without a trace!"Flawless manipulation. Her words struck the Don right where it hurt the most.He wrapped his arms tightly around his fragile wife and child."Cassandra." Caspian ground the name through his teeth, every letter dripping with venom. "Since she loves wiping out bloodlines so much, I'll make sure she wishes she was dead."Nonna gasped for air, a bloodthirsty gleam flashing in her cloudy eyes."At all costs! Destroy Ca

"Are you insane?"Seraphina shoved my hand away. Her voice trembled wildly. "There are twenty-four people outside! The doctors have to state their names three times! And you're telling me my baby was swapped?""Look at his foot.""He's my son!" She snatched the baby up, crying right onto his face. "He has Caspian's nose!""Sera. Look at the ankle."She looked down. That little foot was pale and flawless. The inner ankle was completely clean. Not a single mark.I pulled the tiny glass bottle from my bag, unscrewed it, and let a drop fall on the back of my hand.Blue-black. Like solidified ink."I mixed this practice ink myself during my seventh year as a tattoo artist," I said. "It doesn't wash off. It doesn't rub off. You can soak it in alcohol overnight and it won't fade. This morning, right after they wiped him clean, I put a tiny mark on his left inner ankle.""What mark...?""The Blackthorn crest of the de Santis family. It's only three millimeters. "You want to hand the life of the future Mafia heir over to a bunch of blue-collar workers?"Seraphina sat on the bed, hands on her belly, eyes wide."Not just blue-collar." I counted on my fingers. "My Uncle Sal has been a butcher in Little Italy for fourteen years. Swings a cleaver better than a Sicilian hitman. My cousin Vinny is an ex-Marine, now head of security at a South Side mob casino. My Uncle Frankie is a union enforcer—can carry 200 pounds of contraband up five flights of stairs by himself. And my baby cousin? Last month he put a Ukrainian shooter in the ICU at an underground fight club.""...What exactly does your family do?""We're poor," I said. "And there's a lot of us."That million-dollar check sat in my bag all night. Honestly, I was itching to take a cut. By my usual rules, at least 900k of that belonged in my pocket. But not this time. This was my godson. The day Seraphina married into the de Santis family, her pre-nup properties and trusts hit the tens of milli

"Enough."One word from Caspian, and the entire room went dead silent. He folded the bank records and tossed them on the nightstand."Luca."Luca knelt up straight. "Boss.""I saw the parking lot footage," Caspian said. "You stopped my bleeding. You called 911. I owe you one. Get out. My men downstairs will give you a relocation fee. The de Santis family is covering your sister’s chemo."Luca practically bowed to the floor and scrambled out of the room.Cassandra went pale."Caspian, are you insane?"He ignored her. He turned to look at me. His stare made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up."Ten-dollar Ipecac," he said."...Yeah.""One-grand wax figures.""Clearance sale. Free shipping," I mumbled. He was quiet for three seconds. Then he reached out and patted my shoulder.I almost sank into the floor."At the wedding," he said. "You're the maid of honor."Seraphina laughed through her tears.Cassandra screamed. "You're still marrying her?! Caspian, she had men tailing you! She

"Collusion?" I took a step forward. "Cassandra, this is your third accusation against Seraphina. First, you said she hired a hitman. It was a wax figure. Second, you said she poisoned you. It was a $9.99 prank spray. Now we're on number three."I looked at her."Where's the proof?"Cassandra's face flushed red. "The proof is kneeling right there on the floor!""He's kneeling because you beat him," I said. "Luca, give your phone to the Don. Not her. The Don."Luca scrambled over. He held his cracked phone up with both hands."Boss, I didn't delete anything." His voice shook. "Photos, contacts, banking apps, emails. The password is my sister's birthday, 0311. If you find one single text, one word, one call between me and Seraphina... I'll jump into Lake Michigan tonight."The bodyguard took the phone, plugged it in, and cast the screen directly to the hospital room's TV.Scrolled to the bottom of the contacts. No Seraphina.Scrolled to the bottom of the call log. Nothing. There was only

"Spit it out!" Cassandra kicked him in the ribs.Caspian lifted a finger.A bodyguard stepped up and pulled Cassandra away."Your name is Luca?" Caspian's voice was soft. "Look up."Luca looked up."I'll give you ten seconds," Caspian said. "Tell the truth, you walk out of this room. Say one false word, and you cease to exist in Chicago tomorrow."Luca went dead pale. His lips quivered. He squeezed his eyes shut and blurted it out in one breath:"Miss Aria gave me a hundred grand to seduce you! She wanted to see if you were gay!"Dead silence. The heart monitor beeped once.Caspian blinked."What did you just say?""It's in the gossip rags!" Luca was on the verge of tears. "They say you're thirty-six and unmarried! That you're not into women, that you surround yourself with male guards! Miss Aria said her friend got pregnant with your kid, and she was scared her friend was being used as a beard and ruining her whole life—so she hired me to test you!"Cassandra stumbled a step back."Bu
