Chapter 6

Author: Fierce Sleeping Dog
Three days later, the National Oceanic Center held a grand commendation ceremony to celebrate the success of the rescue.

The venue was our institute’s main hall.

Noah, Cindy, my father, and Linda sat on the brightly lit stage as the guests of honor. They were the perfect family unit, basking in a torrent of congratulations and praise.

When I appeared at the entrance in an old work uniform so washed-out it had turned pale, the entire hall fell silent.

Countless piercing eyes turned to me.

They were filled with contempt, disgust, scorn, and gloating satisfaction.

I ignored it all. Step by step, I walked toward the stage.

“How does she even have the nerve to show up?”

“Exactly. Trash like her should’ve been fired long ago.”

“Look at those ragged clothes. Serves her right.”

The remarks reached my ears loud and clear.

Cindy spotted me.

She was wearing a brand-new white gown that made her look every bit the poised, triumphant queen.

She came down from the stage. Then, in fro

My father’s legs gave out. He crumpled into his chair and breathed in harsh, labored gulps of air.Linda and Cindy crumpled on the floor like spent rags. Their eyes were vacant as if all the life had been drained out of them.I walked toward my father. As I looked at the man I had called “Dad” for over twenty years, my gaze held no warmth.“You think your sins are just adultery, raising your secret daughter, stealing my inheritance, and trying to have me killed?”My voice was low, but the microphone carried it with crystalline clarity through the hall and across the livestreams.“Twenty years ago, did my mother, Charmaine Locke, the founder of Locke Corp., really jump to her death because she was depressed?”I produced my final piece of evidence. It was my mother’s old diary, along with a new witness statement from a former neighbor, secured by my lawyers when we petitioned to reopen the case. The diary was projected onto the main screen.Page after page was turned. In it, m

Cindy suddenly started screeching at me like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.“Vic, how could you fabricate a video like that to slander Noah? He saved all of us! How can you do this to him?”Her voice was trembling with grief. Her eyes were brimming with the agony of being betrayed by her sister. That was her final attempt to salvage the situation. As I watched her terrible acting, I could not even be bothered to respond.I pulled a USB drive from my pocket and tossed it onto the stage.“Slander him? Inside that drive is the result of a three-month investigation I commissioned from a private detective. Noah, Cindy, you two have been secretly transferring the ownership of 17 deep-sea technology patents from under my name for over a year, using a shell corporation registered in the Kayman Islands. “You planned the whole thing. If I died in this ‘rescue mission,’ you would inherit all my intellectual property without a hitch. My life’s work would become your greatest triumph.

Noah’s face was completely drained of color. His lips moved soundlessly, though only a choked rasp escaped his throat. He could not utter a word.My second question had sliced through his polished lie like a scalpel and exposed the rot beneath.Seeing the situation, my father’s expression darkened. He knew that if I kept talking, things would get out of control. He roared at the security team, “What are you waiting for? Get her out of here now!”Several tall guards moved in on me at once. Their gazes were hostile.I did not resist or even move.I just stared calmly at my father, the man I had once held in such high regard.“You’re in quite a hurry to throw me out, Dad. Are you afraid I’ll expose something?”My voice was not loud, but it hit him like a hammer straight to the chest.Just as the guards were about to seize my arms, I raised my phone and pressed “play.”A video appeared on every screen in the auditorium, cast wirelessly from my device. The background was my pr

Every live camera in the room, like sharks scenting blood, swiveled to focus on Noah. His face had gone white as a sheet.Beside him, the smug and triumphant expressions on Cindy’s and my father’s faces froze. Clearly, none of them had expected me to strike at the very height of their glory. After a brief flicker of panic, Noah, who was a seasoned, media-trained scientist, regained his composure. He smoothed out his expression, forced a calm smile, and addressed the cameras in a confident, professional tone.“Victoria, I know you’re mad about what happened before, but you shouldn’t just deny everyone’s hard work and the scientific miracle we achieved just because you’re bitter. I’ll admit this: the standard remote-control interface you designed was indeed locked.”“But…” he said, pivoting smoothly with a glint of intellectual triumph in his eyes, “I utilized the sub’s auxiliary quantum-entanglement communication module, bypassed your physical lockout, and wrote an emergency cont

A stunned silence fell over the detention center.Linda was the first to move. She lunged like a feral animal and snatched the contract from my hands. Then she tore it to shreds. She jabbed a finger at my face. Her expression was twisted with unconcealed hatred.“Victoria, don’t even think about it! My daughter is safe now! You won’t get a single cent! Rot in prison for all I care! You monster!”As I watched the scraps of paper flutter to the floor, my smile only widened. No one knew that I had come back through time.In my first life, I piloted the rescue pod into the frigid, lightless abyss. It was there that Cindy and Noah, who had been working together, breached the hull and sealed me inside the cockpit. I watched the oxygen gauge fall to zero. After I died, they pinned everything on me. They claimed I had sabotaged the mission just to set up my sister because I wanted to seize the chief designer position, only to perish in the accident I created.More than twenty of my stu
