Chapter 1

The wealthy tycoon, Stanford York, froze the moment he saw me.

I handed him the jewelry box. His hand trembled slightly as he took it.

From a hidden compartment, he pulled out a photo. It was a picture of two people together. The image had faded so badly that their faces were no longer clear. But he stared at it in silence for a long time.

"Where is she?"

"My mom passed away." I lowered my eyes. "Before she died, she gave this to me."

Stanford let out a long sigh. "When we broke up back then, I made her a promise. If one day her daughter came to find me with this, I would have my son marry her."

He called his assistant. "Call Kingston back."

My eyes widened. So, what the live comments had said was actually true. The wealthy man really was going to call his son back and have him marry me.

Kingston walked in, looking impatient. He hadn't even changed out of his black racing suit.

Stanford pointed at me. "I called you back to discuss your marriage with her."

Only then did Kingston glance at me and sneer openly. "Dad, which slum did you pick her up from? Another woman trying to use her looks to climb the social ladder?"

"Shut up." Stanford shot him a look. "You spend all day risking your life racing. Who knows when you might end up dead out there? Get married and leave behind an heir. After that, you can die however you want. If you refuse, every card under your name will be frozen starting today. And I'll shut down your whole racing team too."

He stood up, his tone firm. "Your choice."

The father and son stared at each other. Realizing Stanford wasn't joking this time, Kingston gritted his teeth and turned toward me. "Fine. It's just a marriage, anyway."

It only took half an hour to get the marriage license. When we walked out of the county clerk's office, I was still in a daze. Everything felt like a dream.

Kingston snatched my phone. When he handed it back, there was an extra ten million dollars in my bank account.

He warned me, "I'm going racing. Go back on your own. Take the money and keep your mouth shut. Don't even think about telling my dad."

I opened my mouth. "Actually…"

He frowned impatiently. "I knew it. Women like you are the greediest. Fine. I'll give you another ten million dollars. Stop clinging to me, and don't expect me to fall in love with you."

I tried to speak. "Actually, I don't need…"

My phone chimed again. A third transaction of ten million dollars had arrived. I immediately shut my mouth.

"Alright, Mr. York. Have fun."

After Kingston left, I hailed a cab and went home. The moment I opened the door, someone grabbed my hair and yanked me to the floor.

The man who attacked me blew a ring of smoke into my face. "So, you're the one who forged the will and stole Nina's house?"

My younger sister, Nina Henderson, leaned against him. Her eyes were red from crying. "Leah, my boyfriend already had someone verify it. The will is fake.

"Even if you're desperate for money, you can't go against Mom's last wishes. As long as you sign the property deed now and give the house back to me, I won't call the police."

Clutching my throbbing knee, I pushed myself up from the floor. "Fine, I'll sign it. But there has to be a lawyer present to confirm that you are the one who will inherit Mom's house."

Nina's rich boyfriend made a phone call, and soon, a lawyer arrived with the contract.

After I signed my name, Nina snatched the deed away, checked it carefully, then smiled. "Why couldn't you be this cooperative earlier?"

She leaned close and lowered her voice. "It's just a crappy house. My boyfriend's family has plenty of properties. But I just can't stand seeing you win, you know? You're supposed to be poor for the rest of your life and serve as a stepping stone for me."

My whole body trembled with anger. Even people in the live comments were speaking up for me.

"What kind of sister is this? When they were kids, whenever Nina made a mistake, their mom beat Leah instead. Now that they're grown up, all the money Leah earned was taken by their mom and spent on Nina. It feels like Leah isn't even the biological child."

"At first, I thought Leah stole Nina's life by taking that photo to Stanford. But now, it looks like Nina deserves it."

Reading those words made my nose sting.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Kingston. "Didn't I tell you to go home? Where did you run off to? The housekeeper didn't see you, and my dad called me again asking about it."

I froze. "I went back to my own home."

He clicked his tongue. "Why are you running around? You've got half an hour to get back to the villa. Gloria cooked a feast. If you're not there, they'll start asking me again. So annoying."

Right after he hung up angrily, another call came in. "Hello, Mrs. York. I'm the York family's driver. Where are you right now? I'll come pick you up and take you home."

I gripped my phone tightly. Something deep inside my chest suddenly trembled. So, it's not like I had nowhere to go, after all.

I gave him the address and went inside to pack my things.

Nina leaned against the doorframe, watching me. "No wonder you agreed so easily. You found a man to take you in. Which old guy is taking care of you? Or did you find another poor loser and plan to rent a place with him?"

I ignored her and picked up my suitcase. "Move."

"What's the rush?" She blocked my way. "Call your boyfriend up. Let me see what kind of man would want trash like you."

The York family's car definitely wasn't cheap. If Nina saw it…

Suddenly, I smiled. "Why do you care so much about my boyfriend? Are you trying to seduce him? After all, you've been stealing my things since we were kids."

Nina froze, then burst out laughing. "Are you out of your mind? With someone like you, the only kind of man you could find is old, ugly, and poor. I wouldn't want him even if you gave him to me. Leah, I think you're just too embarrassed to show him."

I pushed past her and walked out without looking back.

After the wedding ended, I went to find Stanford. He was standing alone on the terrace, staring at the photograph in his hand."Dad." I walked over and spoke softly. "Can you tell me about my mom? What kind of person was she?"A trace of nostalgia flashed through Stanford's eyes. His voice softened. "She was a very kind, gentle woman. But deep down, she was also incredibly strong. No matter how difficult things were, no matter how hard life got, she would always find a way to keep going."I remember once, we went through a flood together. I was caught in a whirlpool. Your mother, such a thin woman, jumped in and grabbed my hand. She held on with everything she had and saved my life. From that day on, I always wanted to repay her."So, when you came with the photograph, I didn't even ask any questions and immediately arranged for you to marry Kingston. That was a promise I made to her."The night wind drifted across the terrace. Stanford let out a long sigh. "There was too much we

I slowly raised my arm so everyone could see the old scars on it. Those were the light and dark marks that would never fade.I gave a self-deprecating smile. "Some of these are from being whipped. Some are cigarette burns. And this obvious scar is from when I was held down and scalded with boiling water as a child. This was the 'care' she gave me."I looked at the stunned Nina. "As for the photograph, your mom knew about it too. When she heard that my mom's boyfriend had become Harbor City's richest man, her first thought was to let her own daughter take my place and marry into the York family."Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to tell you the truth. She died in the middle of you arguing with her."I smiled slightly. "Nina, you and your mom abused me for 20 years. But when she got sick, I still worked overtime every day to raise money for her treatment. My conscience is clear."As for the debts your mom left behind, I knew nothing about them, and I never spent a dime of th

The entire venue erupted. Every camera instantly turned toward the test report. Flashes went off wildly.Nina looked at me with triumph and malice in her eyes. "Leah, you stole my things. You stole my life. Now, it's time to give it all back."However, when she faced the cameras, her expression quickly turned pitiful. "She's fooled all of you. She's an ungrateful bitch. My mom kindly adopted her, but she bullied me since we were kids and even stole money from home to sleep with men. "When my mom fell sick, she didn't care at all. She even angered my mom to death before she could reveal the truth. Leah, I just want to ask. What did our family ever do to you? What did we do to deserve this?" She bawled as if she had suffered a great injustice. The crowd burst into whispers. "So, she's adopted…""She even stole the real daughter's opportunity. How shameless.""If the York family keeps her as their daughter-in-law, their stock price might crash."The murmurs grew louder and loude

All eyes turned toward me.The man's face went pale with fright, and he shoved Nina. "Shut her up! Is she crazy? How dare she call Mr. York 'honey'?" He hurriedly turned around, putting on a flattering smile as he blocked Kingston. "Mr. York, it's a misunderstanding. This woman isn't right in the head. She's too desperate to climb the social ladder. I'll drag her out right now."Before he finished speaking, Kingston had already seen me. Nina was covering my mouth tightly, and I couldn't make a sound. I could only stare at him with wide eyes.Kingston's expression darkened instantly. He kicked the man aside. "Get out of the way."Then, he strode toward me, pushed Nina aside, and pulled me into his arms. His voice carried suppressed anger. "Who told you you could touch her?"The crowd burst into uproar. All kinds of shocked, curious looks were cast in our direction.Kingston raised his head and spoke calmly. "I didn't have the chance to formally introduce her before. This is my w

Kingston woke up the next afternoon. When he opened his eyes and saw me, he froze for a moment.I was sitting beside the bed, and my eyes were red."You've been crying?" His voice was hoarse.I really did want to cry. If Kingston had died while he was with me, his father would inevitably blame me. He might even kick me out, and the money in my bank account could be frozen. The thought made me as sad as I'd be if my husband had died. But Kingston suddenly laughed. His eyes lit up as he looked at me. "Leah Henderson, before this, I always thought you were only being nice to me because of money. But yesterday, you risked your life to save me. Now, I believe you really like me."I opened my mouth. "Actually…"He interrupted me. "Since we're already married, I'm willing to give you a chance. We can try getting along first. Oh, right. Do you still have spending money? I'll transfer another 100 million dollars to you."I immediately swallowed the words I was about to say. "Thank you. I

I moved into the York residence. The housekeeper, Clyde Hoffman, had already prepared silk pajamas, jewelry, and a full set of imported skincare products for me. After eating well and sleeping well, even my skin looked clearer.Gone were the days of working until three in the morning, saving money by eating instant noodles, being scolded by clients without daring to talk back, and thanking my boss for taking credit for my work. Goodbye, corporate slave life.Kingston didn't come home for three days straight. But that didn't stop him from becoming, in my mind, a sugar daddy worthy of respect. On the third night, my phone rang. "You can drive, right? Come pick me up."It was Kingston. The background noise was loud. When I walked into the private room wearing a long dress, several pairs of eyes turned toward me at once. Some were sizing me up, some were mocking, and some clearly had bad intentions.Kingston sat in the middle, swirling a glass of alcohol in his hand. "Kingston, th
