Chapter 1

Author: duran1995
Nearly everyone in the Family knew I had a crush on Clark.

Every eye in the room settled on me, and the noisy party fell into a brief silence.

Clark let out a sudden laugh. "Leave her alone, everyone."

He played it well, as if he were covering for me.

But the moment our eyes met, I caught the disgust in his gaze.

That one look told me everything. He had been reborn too.

A chorus of boos followed, but the crowd wouldn't let it go.

"So did you find the coin or not?"

"Speak up, or Clark will end up as someone else's boyfriend!"

I swallowed the storm churning inside me and discreetly spat the coin into the trash.

Then I pushed the cherry pie forward and shook my head. "I didn't find it."

My father, Vincent Reed, was one of Clark's most trusted men and one of the Family's top assassins.

When I turned eighteen, Dad had already retired. He placed me under Clark's command. That was five years ago.

During that time, we were completely in sync. We'd each saved the other's life.

Even Dominic Russo, the Don himself, would occasionally tease Clark about me.

Everyone assumed we were together in all but name, that it was only a matter of time before one of us made it official.

I thought so too, until two years ago, when I suddenly gained a half-sister.

Everything changed.

This party was a perfect example. I'd only managed to get in by shamelessly tagging along with a friend.

Meanwhile, my sister, Caroline Reed, had arrived in Clark's car.

In my previous life, I had done something stupid because I was desperate to win Clark back.

Clark narrowed his eyes, studying my blank expression. He repeated, "You didn't find it?"

I met his gaze, picked up my fork, and crushed the pie to a pulp. The blood-red filling sprawled across the snow-white bone china.

He examined it carefully before finally looking away.

By then, Caroline was the only one who hadn't eaten yet.

The excitement on her face was impossible to hide. Before she could even pick up her slice, Clark raised a finger, and a servant quickly cleared the mess from the table.

"No need. The coin is obviously in Caroline's pie.

"Starting today, she's my girlfriend for a month."

As he said this, his gaze drifted toward me, almost imperceptibly.

The sync between us told me exactly what that look meant. He was afraid I'd say something and ruin everything.

But I stayed quiet.

Even as the two of them kissed while everyone cheered, I kept my expression perfectly still.

Clark was young and successful. His private party was nothing short of extravagant.

When it ended, he sent a fleet of luxury cars to take his friends home.

I had already decided that in this life, I wanted nothing to do with Clark. I certainly wasn't going to ride in his car.

I headed toward the street alone, but Caroline stopped me.

She put on a look of tender concern.

"Nelly, are you upset? Are you mad that I took Clark from you?"

Her eyes turned red. "But it's just a game..."

Before she could finish, Clark immediately took her hand, his tone firm.

"Game or not, you're my girlfriend now."

He didn't raise his voice, but he spoke loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

Caroline couldn't contain her triumph any longer and subtly arched a smug eyebrow at me.

I said nothing, but walked away on my own.

It was hard to find a cab at that hour. By the time Clark's fleet of luxury cars had driven away, the taxi I'd called still hadn't arrived.

I heard footsteps behind me and turned around. It was Clark.

He lowered his head to light a cigar, then got straight to the point. "Nelly, I know you've been reborn too.

"You know I love Caroline. As long as you behave and don't try to take her place, I'll make sure you live a comfortable life."

In our previous life, Clark had risen to become the Family's underboss, second in power only to the Don.

I knew he meant every word.

But I had no interest in taking something that wasn't mine.

"Clark, I'll resign tomorrow and find other work within the Family. I promise to stay far away from you."

I meant it. But he laughed.

"You're only saying that because you're angry. You're a soldier. You know exactly how much trouble you'd have without my protection.

"Besides, you're still paying for your father's dialysis.

"In this life, as long as you promise not to get pregnant, I'll let you stay by my side."

In our previous life, my sister had spiraled into depression after learning I was pregnant.

She had tried to kill herself multiple times. Clark saved her every time.

Just then, my taxi arrived. Before I got in, I left him with one last word.

"Don't trouble yourself, boss. I can figure out how to survive on my own."

He scoffed and clearly didn't believe me.

Back home, I knocked on the door to my father's study.

"Dad, you said last week that the Don's second son just came back and needs people to fill some positions. I want to work for him."

I glanced casually past him.Only his most trusted men stood behind him."Come on. Let's go."His eyes shone with feverish excitement. He was clearly starting to lose his grip.I didn't move. His expression darkened immediately. "Are you in love with Matthew?"I said nothing. He sneered. "Love him all you want. He's finished. And that old fool of a father of his? The Silver Bullet Gang and my men should be at the hospital by now, putting a bullet in him."I gave a faint smile. "I'll go with you. But where did you get your forces?"And how did you manage to track the movements of every key figure in the Family so precisely?"The scales of victory were already tipping in his favor. He didn't mind telling me now if he thought it would win me over. "I'm no idiot. Half my people operated in the open, the other half in the shadows."The Don's butler has been on my payroll since the day I joined the Family."Is it really that hard to believe I know everyone's movements?"This butler had grown

At the last second, Matthew came through the door.He sent Clark flying with a single kick, then pinned him down and hit him blow after blow, each one landing hard.Clark tried to fight back, but he was no match for Matthew.By the time Matthew was done, Clark was barely alive."Throw him out."Matthew wiped his hands and walked me toward the exit.I didn't look back, but I could hear Clark cursing at the men dragging him away. They were his former subordinates. "I won't forget this!" Clark spat. "I saved your life once, and now you dare drag me around for your new boss? When I'm back on top, I'll kill you!"No one knew Clark's nature better than I did.He seemed mild on the surface, but underneath he never let a slight go unpunished. After five years of running missions under him, I knew what he was capable of. I didn't believe for a second that this was the end for him.I couldn't help glancing back.My eyes met his: cold, distant, like a stranger's.Unease crept through me. Matthew

"This drive contains every piece of anonymous correspondence between me and that politician."The person who tipped him off and saved his life can be me, or it can be you, Clark."Here's the deal. Let my father go, and you can claim the credit for saving him."You can kill me if you need revenge, but Matthew still has every record of you helping Lorenzo break the rules over the years."He'll give it to the Don, and we'll both burn."It was my only way out alive.Clark knew it. In the end, he chose to stop fighting me.I confirmed over video that my father had made it safely to Matthew's car. Only then did I give Clark the password to the USB drive. He followed me to the front door of the villa. As I stepped through the threshold, he grabbed my hand one last time."I was wrong, Nelly."I know I was wrong."Caroline was a fraud. She was just a passing fascination."Nelly, it wasn't until you were gone that I realized it's not you who can't live without me."It's me who can't live without

Clark took an enormous risk with this plan.He and Lorenzo prepared in secret, carefully keeping everything hidden from the Don and the senior members.Five days later, the politician arrived as scheduled. The assassin planted at the banquet didn't even have time to pull the trigger before police stormed in and took him down.Clark was meticulous. Before the mission, he'd already instructed the assassin to take his own life if the operation failed.Afterward, he moved fast, activating his network to bribe every level of the police department. He even anticipated that guests at the banquet would record videos on their phones.Clark spent a fortune shutting down most of the channels where the footage could spread. We weren't about to let this golden opportunity go to waste.Matthew deliberately allowed a small portion of the videos to slip through, letting them circulate on a limited scale. The incident eventually reached the Don's ears. The night the Family launched its investigation, I

There was no way Clark would let me know about this humiliation. For once, he didn't press the issue. Instead, he sent people to hunt down the subordinate who had already fled.In the meantime, he also pulled Caroline's financial records. It was evening before Clark finally showed up at Caroline's hospital room, his face dark and stormy."Honey, where have you been?"Caroline was her usual teary-eyed self. "It wasn't Nelly's fault. Please don't blame her."Tears dripped down one by one. "We lost the baby, but we can try again."She's the only sister I have. Promise me you won't hurt her."Clark stared at Caroline, his expression ice-cold.He couldn't reconcile the woman in front of him with the snarling, contorted face he'd seen on camera lunging to shove me down the stairs."The miscarriage is for the best."His voice was flat. "Saves me the trouble."Caroline's eyes went wide with disbelief. "That was your child!"Clark hurled a stack of documents at her face. "Was it really mine?"H

"Ever since that banquet, Clark's been treating me like a completely different person. You must have said something to him! What did you say to him?"The moment she saw me, Caroline sounded almost hysterical.I took a sip of my coffee. "He's the one ignoring you. Why are you taking it out on me?"That shut her up for a second. She bit her lip until it bled."You think I don't see through your little games? Using that boy toy of yours to make Clark jealous. Don't forget, he and I are the couple. I'm carrying his child."The sweet, innocent mask was gone. She jabbed a finger toward my face and snarled. "How shameless can you be? You're the other woman here!"I arched a brow. "Are you describing your mother?"My investigation had revealed that Caroline's mother had been a live-in caregiver hired to look after my mother. She'd done everything she could to get pregnant by my father, believing that a baby would guarantee her a life of comfort. But faced with my formidable mother, Dad chicken
