Chapter 3

Author: The Orange
Inside that room was the bed Ethan and I had chosen together after three separate trips to furniture stores.

Ethan said nothing. Instead, he helped Ashley out of the coat and hung it on the rack like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Then, something in the entryway caught his eye, and he froze.

"Mirabel?" he called out.

Ethan's brows furrowed, as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing. "How did you end up like this?"

I looked up at him.

"I told you. If I made one more wish, I'd become three years old."

Having said that, I set the signed agreement that formalized the end of our engagement on the coffee table. The soft scrape of paper against its surface barely made a sound.

Ethan never looked at the agreement. Instead, his gaze landed on the open suitcase nearby.

"Why did you empty out the closet?" he asked with a frown.

I replied, "I'm packing. I'm leaving today."

Ashley immediately stepped forward and tugged at his sleeve. "Ethan… did I cause this? Maybe I should go back to the hospital. I'm really okay."

But Ethan caught her wrist before she could move.

"You nearly died. You're not going anywhere," he said firmly.

When he turned to me, his expression darkened. Then, he snapped, "Mirabel, I'm still going to marry you. I'll even go with you to find a way to get you back to normal if that's what it takes. But don't upset her right now. She's still recovering."

Ashley wandered around the living room until she stopped in front of my suitcase. The moment she saw the white wedding dress folded neatly inside, she reached out to touch it.

"It's gorgeous."

But a hangnail on her fingertip caught on the delicate lace, and she pulled without thinking. Almost immediately, the sound of fabric ripping cut through the air.

A large tear split the hem of the gown. Even then, Ethan didn't so much as glance at the damage. He simply lifted the wedding dress out of the suitcase and tossed it onto the couch.

"Don't touch it," he told Ashley. "It's dusty. You don't want to breathe that in."

Embarrassed, Ashley pulled her hand back. Then, from the corner of her eye, she noticed something on the floor.

It was the bracelet I'd dropped by the door earlier.

She walked over, picked it up, and examined the intricate design.

"The pattern on this bracelet is so unique. Ethan, can I wear it for a photo to celebrate my recovery?" she asked.

I immediately stepped forward. "Give it back."

It was something my mom had given me. I reached for the bracelet, but my hands had grown too small. I couldn't even reach it.

In the next instant, the bracelet slipped from Ashley's fingertips and hit the floor with a clink.

Ethan's expression darkened when he heard that. He assumed I'd thrown it in a fit of anger.

He bent down, picked up the bracelet, and slid it onto Ashley's wrist. "Ignore her. As long as it makes you happy, just wear it."

Ashley lifted her wrist, letting the light catch the bracelet. "Does it look good?"

Ethan stared at it for a moment before saying, "It suits you."

I didn't ask for the bracelet back. Instead, I slid the hard drive across the table toward him.

"Twice," I began, holding his gaze. "You survived the plane crash, and you made it through bankruptcy. Why was she the one standing beside you both times?"

Ethan glanced at the hard drive, yet his expression didn't waver.

"When I was dying after the crash, and when I wanted to jump after I lost everything, she was the only person who never asked me for anything in return.

"Ashley was the one who stayed by my side during the lowest point of my life without demanding a thing."

At that, I looked down at the wound in my palm, the mark left by granting his wish. It hadn't even begun to scab over.

I'd traded my life to save his. But to him, it had been nothing more than the cost of a deal.

Morning light spilled into the chamber.

Still wearing my bracelet, Ashley pushed open the door and walked in.

Color had returned to her cheeks, and she looked far healthier than before. It was as though the pain she'd endured the night before had simply vanished.

"Mirabel," she called softly.

I looked up at her.

Her fingers traced the bracelet around her wrist, and a hint of excitement flickered in her eyes as she said, "I couldn't sleep at all last night. There's one wish I just couldn't stop thinking about.

"I want to experience an entire lifetime with Ethan. I want to see what it would be like from our wedding day until we grow old together. I'd like to know whether we'd have been happier if you had never existed."

I remained seated on a cushion, too weak to stand.

"No." My voice came out hoarse. "The Realm of Wishes isn't some game. A wish like that would cost me what little life I have left."

  • I Spent My Life Granting His Wishes   Chapter 10

Third-Person POV:The scene shifted, and another timeline unfolded before him. In that life, Ethan had never existed. Mirabel had never gotten engaged, never made wishes on anyone's behalf, and never sacrificed years of her own life until she'd become an infant who couldn't even speak. At the foot of the snow-capped mountains, Mirabel wandered through the meadow in a white dress. The old bracelet her mother had left her rested against her wrist. The breeze stirred the grass, and she smiled brightly. She lived a peaceful life. Ethan stared at her smile as tears fell onto the back of his hand. Beneath the surface, the love he'd always been so proud of had done nothing but drain her dry. He'd built the image of a devoted lover on the life he'd stolen from Mirabel. What a joke. Back in reality, Ethan's life began to drain away. Strands of his dark hair were rapidly turning white. He hunched over, his skin shriveling and wrinkling. He visibly aged with each passing second.

Ashley started analyzing the situation, utterly convinced she was right. According to her, Ethan hated dealing with trouble, and he'd get tired of taking care of a baby soon enough. Once his patience ran out, he'd come crawling back to her.She refused to go back to the days when she was sick and broke. She didn't want to count every dollar just to afford her medication.Ashley straightened up and looked toward the altar beside her. The scattered papers and red pen remained exactly where they'd been left. Suddenly, a reckless impulse took hold of her. Ashley actually had the nerve to make a wish in my chamber. She stepped forward, grabbed the pen, and scrawled across the page. She wrote, "Let Mirabel remain an infant who can never speak."Then, she bit her index finger until it bled before pressing it against the paper. The red glow had barely begun when the door burst open, slamming against the wall with a bang. Ethan stood in the doorway. His tie hung crooked, two butt

Blood streamed from my wrist into the silver basin. With every drop, my face grew a shade paler. The scene shifted. In a lavish ballroom, Ethan handed Ashley the champagne glass raised in celebration of his victory. He smiled while I suffered. At that moment, the pain left Ethan gasping. His fingers dug into the carpet until his nails split. He finally understood that when I'd told him over the phone that I was cold, I hadn't been fishing for sympathy or trying to win his attention. I had truly been freezing to death. At first, Ashley was relieved that he hadn't sacrificed her health. But as soon as the news of his company's collapse came through on her phone, she froze. She then lunged at Ethan and grabbed him by the shoulders. The first words out of her mouth were about how she was going to afford the expensive medical bills. She kept repeating that she couldn't go without her medication.Ethan, drenched in cold sweat, looked up at her. The last trace of tenderness in hi

Nearby, Ashley was still crying, insisting on how frightened and helpless she'd been that day. Ethan looked up at her. The warmth that had once filled his eyes was gone. He pointed toward the door and ordered her to get out. After that, he lifted me from the crib, carried me back into the chamber, and laid me on a soft cushion. He then stood before the altar, utterly at a loss.Ethan was searching for a way to turn me back. Following what he had seen me do, he sliced open his palm and smeared his blood across the altar.Moments later, the old altar flared crimson. Faded lines of text appeared in midair, revealing the only way to undo what had happened. The one who received the wish was bound to return what they'd taken. Only then could the course of fate be restored. First, Ethan had to return the life that had been restored to him after the plane crash. Second, he had to give back the career and wealth he had reclaimed after losing everything. Third, Ashley had to return

That night, Ethan pulled up a chair and sat beside the crib. He didn't dare touch me. Instead, he took off the bracelet and gripped it so tightly that his knuckles turned white. Half-asleep, I heard him whisper in a hoarse voice, "Mirabel… please don't do this."…At first light, Ethan charged into my chamber and rummaged through everything. Scrolls and handwritten notes ended up scattered across the floor as he searched for any shred of proof that I'd lied to him. Then, he turned on my computer. Right in the center of the desktop sat a folder that hadn't been there before. I'd saved it before Ethan took my bracelet away. The folder was labeled "Proof I Kept You Alive". The cursor hovered over the folder for a long moment, but Ethan couldn't bring himself to click. Eventually, he did. The first set of photos popped onto the screen. They had been taken the evening he woke up after the plane crash. In one of the pictures, Ethan was still wearing his hospital wristband,

Ethan carried me and rushed out of the chamber, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He hadn't even stopped to grab his coat. I was swallowed up by my own coat, the fabric hanging loose around me. All I could manage were the faintest whimpers. Even my cries were so weak they sounded as though they might stop at any moment. Ethan sprinted to the parking garage. He tried several times, but he couldn't even get the key into the ignition. Under his breath, he kept repeating, "Impossible… That's impossible…"Then, he called the chief of a private hospital. The moment the call connected, Ethan started shouting that there had been a serious and completely unexplained medical emergency. He even demanded every top specialist be on standby at once. Right then, Ashley came running after him. Her face was drained of color as she planted herself in front of the car door. She stared at the bundle in Ethan's arms, panic flashing in her eyes. Yet, when she finally spoke, she didn't ask if I
