Chapter 4

Author: The Orange
Ethan leaned against the doorway. When I finished speaking, he let out a scoff and said, "Mirabel, if the legend isn't real, then it can't hurt you. And if it is, you've already saved my life twice. What's one more wish?"

I stared at him, and suddenly, something inside me went hollow.

"Give me back the bracelet," I said.

Ethan crossed the room in a few quick strides and shielded Ashley behind him. "She just recovered. Don't ruin this for her right now."

I planted my hands on the carpet and tried to crawl toward them.

But the next second, Ethan caught Ashley's wrist and lifted it high into the air. The old silver bracelet Mom had left me gleamed softly in the morning light.

He looked me in the eye and asked, each word slow and deliberate, "Well? Are you going to make the wish or not?"

I gritted my teeth. "No—"

Before I could finish, Ethan lifted his arm, ready to hurl the bracelet at the wall.

My heart lurched.

"Fine."

Moments later, the Realm of Wishes opened. Smoke poured from the altar, spreading like a snowfall until it engulfed the entire chamber.

Deep within the mist, Ashley appeared in a wedding gown. With her arm linked through Ethan's, they walked down the aisle together.

Wedding bells rang.

Ethan lowered his gaze and slipped a diamond ring onto Ashley's finger. His eyes glistened with unshed tears, and when he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"Now, I have no regrets."

They kissed as applause rang out and petals rained down around them.

Later, they moved into a house with a garden.

Ashley didn't like the color of the curtains. By the next day, every curtain in the house had been replaced with ones in the amber shade she loved.

One night, she suddenly craved a bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup. Ethan threw on a jacket and went downstairs.

He clumsily made a mess of the kitchen before carrying a bowl back upstairs with a sheepish grin. "If it's bad, I'll do better next time."

Later still, Ashley got pregnant. Ethan turned down every business dinner and made it home on time every single day.

He crouched before her, rested a hand against her belly, and waited for the baby to kick. When he felt the tiny kick, he froze for a long moment before breaking into a goofy grin.

Then, their child was born. He learned to walk and grew up.

Ethan lifted the kid high over his head, spinning in circles on the lawn. He walked their child to school and watched him leave home to build a life of his own.

Many years later, Ethan stood beside Ashley, her hand in his, as they attended their child's wedding.

They grew old together. Their grandchildren filled the house with laughter, and warm sunlight bathed the garden. It felt like a dream that would never end.

Everyone said Ethan had lived a perfect life.

But in the chamber, only silence remained. The mark tore open my palm. Blood trickled down my fingers and dripped into a silver basin below, each drop fainter than the last.

My engagement ring slipped from the pocket of my now oversized coat and rolled to the foot of the bed.

I reached for it, only to realize my hand had already shrunk. My oversized sleeves pooled on the floor, and my fingertips couldn't even reach the edge of the bed.

The backlash ground through my bones inch by inch, as though it were tearing me apart only to force me back inside a body even smaller than before.

I curled into myself, and the metallic tang of blood filled my mouth.

I wanted to call Ethan's name. Yet, all that escaped my lips was a whimper, so faint it was almost impossible to hear.

Inside the mist, Ethan had already grown old. Ashley leaned against his shoulder as she fell asleep, and children's laughter drifted from inside the house.

He gazed at the garden, bathed in warm sunlight. For a brief moment, his thoughts drifted.

He remembered a time years ago when someone sat waiting under the lamp, dinner already on the table.

She had never asked for flowers or demanded promises. All she'd ever wanted was for him to come home on time, just once.

At that moment, the Realm of Wishes collapsed, and the smoke dissolved into nothing.

Ethan was still smiling when he instinctively called out, "Mirabel, it's over. Once you're back to normal, we'll get married, okay?"

But no one answered. All that remained was an oversized coat lying crumpled on the carpet, and the engagement ring lying beside it.

Ethan halted in his tracks. Then, he walked over and slowly lifted the oversized coat. Curled inside was a newborn baby, with a large bracelet hanging loosely around its wrist.

He froze at the sight of it.

Third-Person POV:The scene shifted, and another timeline unfolded before him. In that life, Ethan had never existed. Mirabel had never gotten engaged, never made wishes on anyone's behalf, and never sacrificed years of her own life until she'd become an infant who couldn't even speak. At the foot of the snow-capped mountains, Mirabel wandered through the meadow in a white dress. The old bracelet her mother had left her rested against her wrist. The breeze stirred the grass, and she smiled brightly. She lived a peaceful life. Ethan stared at her smile as tears fell onto the back of his hand. Beneath the surface, the love he'd always been so proud of had done nothing but drain her dry. He'd built the image of a devoted lover on the life he'd stolen from Mirabel. What a joke. Back in reality, Ethan's life began to drain away. Strands of his dark hair were rapidly turning white. He hunched over, his skin shriveling and wrinkling. He visibly aged with each passing second.

Ashley started analyzing the situation, utterly convinced she was right. According to her, Ethan hated dealing with trouble, and he'd get tired of taking care of a baby soon enough. Once his patience ran out, he'd come crawling back to her.She refused to go back to the days when she was sick and broke. She didn't want to count every dollar just to afford her medication.Ashley straightened up and looked toward the altar beside her. The scattered papers and red pen remained exactly where they'd been left. Suddenly, a reckless impulse took hold of her. Ashley actually had the nerve to make a wish in my chamber. She stepped forward, grabbed the pen, and scrawled across the page. She wrote, "Let Mirabel remain an infant who can never speak."Then, she bit her index finger until it bled before pressing it against the paper. The red glow had barely begun when the door burst open, slamming against the wall with a bang. Ethan stood in the doorway. His tie hung crooked, two butt

Blood streamed from my wrist into the silver basin. With every drop, my face grew a shade paler. The scene shifted. In a lavish ballroom, Ethan handed Ashley the champagne glass raised in celebration of his victory. He smiled while I suffered. At that moment, the pain left Ethan gasping. His fingers dug into the carpet until his nails split. He finally understood that when I'd told him over the phone that I was cold, I hadn't been fishing for sympathy or trying to win his attention. I had truly been freezing to death. At first, Ashley was relieved that he hadn't sacrificed her health. But as soon as the news of his company's collapse came through on her phone, she froze. She then lunged at Ethan and grabbed him by the shoulders. The first words out of her mouth were about how she was going to afford the expensive medical bills. She kept repeating that she couldn't go without her medication.Ethan, drenched in cold sweat, looked up at her. The last trace of tenderness in hi

Nearby, Ashley was still crying, insisting on how frightened and helpless she'd been that day. Ethan looked up at her. The warmth that had once filled his eyes was gone. He pointed toward the door and ordered her to get out. After that, he lifted me from the crib, carried me back into the chamber, and laid me on a soft cushion. He then stood before the altar, utterly at a loss.Ethan was searching for a way to turn me back. Following what he had seen me do, he sliced open his palm and smeared his blood across the altar.Moments later, the old altar flared crimson. Faded lines of text appeared in midair, revealing the only way to undo what had happened. The one who received the wish was bound to return what they'd taken. Only then could the course of fate be restored. First, Ethan had to return the life that had been restored to him after the plane crash. Second, he had to give back the career and wealth he had reclaimed after losing everything. Third, Ashley had to return

That night, Ethan pulled up a chair and sat beside the crib. He didn't dare touch me. Instead, he took off the bracelet and gripped it so tightly that his knuckles turned white. Half-asleep, I heard him whisper in a hoarse voice, "Mirabel… please don't do this."…At first light, Ethan charged into my chamber and rummaged through everything. Scrolls and handwritten notes ended up scattered across the floor as he searched for any shred of proof that I'd lied to him. Then, he turned on my computer. Right in the center of the desktop sat a folder that hadn't been there before. I'd saved it before Ethan took my bracelet away. The folder was labeled "Proof I Kept You Alive". The cursor hovered over the folder for a long moment, but Ethan couldn't bring himself to click. Eventually, he did. The first set of photos popped onto the screen. They had been taken the evening he woke up after the plane crash. In one of the pictures, Ethan was still wearing his hospital wristband,

Ethan carried me and rushed out of the chamber, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He hadn't even stopped to grab his coat. I was swallowed up by my own coat, the fabric hanging loose around me. All I could manage were the faintest whimpers. Even my cries were so weak they sounded as though they might stop at any moment. Ethan sprinted to the parking garage. He tried several times, but he couldn't even get the key into the ignition. Under his breath, he kept repeating, "Impossible… That's impossible…"Then, he called the chief of a private hospital. The moment the call connected, Ethan started shouting that there had been a serious and completely unexplained medical emergency. He even demanded every top specialist be on standby at once. Right then, Ashley came running after him. Her face was drained of color as she planted herself in front of the car door. She stared at the bundle in Ethan's arms, panic flashing in her eyes. Yet, when she finally spoke, she didn't ask if I
