Chapter 2

Author: Yanrise
By then, Theo had tried calling me four times, but I hadn't answered.

I floated over to him. He looked panicked, his brow furrowed.

He took off his badge, his face turning pale. "Uncle Paolo, has something happened to Daisy? I'm going to North Hill to find her right now."

Dad blocked his way, his face set. "This is the most important moment of your life. Daisy has spent 13 years taking the hits meant for you. Wasn't it all for today? Just wait a little longer. She'll be fine even if she gets back a little late."

I floated to Dad's side and suddenly wanted to ask him one thing: If Theo were the one who'd gone missing today, would you still say it was no big deal?

Mom agreed. "Taking the hits meant for you is a blessing for Daisy. She's come home on her own with worse injuries before. Don't delay the succession ceremony because of her."

Dad added calmly, "No one else matters more than you today. If she can't hold out through this, then 13 years of training were for nothing."

Just wait a little longer.

I'd heard those words over and over throughout my childhood.

On my 12th birthday, the only thing I asked Mom for was a tiny strawberry cake, no bigger than my hand.

Mom said yes without really thinking about it, but I was happy all day.

That evening, word came that someone was planning to attack Theo on his way home from school.

Ten minutes later, I was dressed in my cousin's school uniform and riding in his car through the school's front gate.

Mom and Dad took the real Theo out through the back entrance themselves.

I led the people tailing me around the city for four hours, and I didn't go home until I knew my cousin was safe.

By then it was almost midnight.

The first thing I did was run to the kitchen. The cake was gone. All that was left was a crushed box in the trash.

A maid said, "Your mother said the strawberry cake would go bad if it sat too long, so she told me to throw it out."

I didn't cry. I just fished the empty box out, wiped it clean, and hid it in my drawer.

It was the only proof I had that Mom had promised me anything for my birthday that year.

I still went to find Mom. She was sitting by Theo's bed. My cousin had only been a little shaken up, and he was holding a glass of milk she'd warmed for him herself.

I reminded her quietly, "Mom, today's my birthday."

She frowned. "Theo almost got hurt today, and all you can think about is your birthday? Grow up."

I opened my mouth. I wanted to tell her I'd just spent four hours being hunted too. But in the end, I said nothing.

The next day, the family threw a small party. Dad said it was to help Theo get over the scare.

I sat at the top of the stairs, listening as Mom, Dad, and the members of the main branch celebrated Theo's safety.

A maid brought me a leftover slice of strawberry cake. I didn't eat it.

It was never about the cake. I just wanted to know if Mom and Dad could put me before Theo, even once.

But the answer was always no. Dad cut my long hair short because I had to look exactly like Theo. Mom threw out all my favorite dresses because "Theo would never wear anything like that." They were even willing to sacrifice my life for him.

Dad always told me my job wouldn't be done until Theo officially took over the family.

That was why I'd been so eager for this day to come.

I thought I had my whole life ahead of me. Once I was no longer Theo's stand-in, Mom and Dad would finally get to know the real Daisy instead of seeing me as nothing more than his double.

But I died on the very last day.

I didn't disappear right away. After the funeral, I stayed at the Valenti estate for a long time.Mom went into my room every day.She put the black suits away one by one, but she could never bring herself to throw them out.Once, she used my wish list to buy enough dresses to fill an entire closet. When a maid asked if she should get rid of the old suits, Mom suddenly burst into tears. She had finally understood that no matter how many dresses she bought, I'd never come back to wear them.Later, Mom started going to an orphanage on the edge of the city every week. Many of the girls there were around seven or eight, just as I had been. The first time she went, a little girl with short hair tugged on her hand and asked, "Do you have a daughter?"Mom stood there for a long time. Finally, with red eyes, she nodded. "I do."But I lost her."After that, she bought dresses and cakes for the children and remembered every one of their birthdays. But she never said she was doing it for me.She

On the day of the funeral, Mom got me a white dress after all.It wasn't because Grandpa had forgiven her.It was only because he'd said the dead should be dressed in the clothes they would have wanted to wear. Her hands shook the entire time she dressed me.She found a pearl hair clip in my drawer that I'd bought in secret when I was little. But when she picked it up, she realized my hair was still so short that the clip had almost nothing to grip. She tried again and again. In the end, the clip slipped out of my hair.Mom suddenly crumpled against the side of the casket, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. "Daisy, I'm sorry. I'll let you grow your hair out now, okay?"I stood behind her and didn't answer. Those were the words I'd wanted to hear more than anything.Every time Dad cut my hair, I'd secretly wonder why Mom never spoke up to stop him.But she never did. Not once. Now she was finally willing. But dead people's hair doesn't grow.Dad stood on the other side of the cas

The next day, Theo shut himself in the training room.He had someone bring out all 13 years' worth of my mission records.I'd never been allowed to see any of them.Dad said a stand-in only needed to follow orders. She didn't need to know how she was being graded. The first record was from when I was seven."Gait not similar enough. Continue training."The second was from when I was shot at age 11."A deviation from the decoy route allowed a second group to get close to the heir. Mission score: 70."When Theo read that, his fingers tightened around the page. The next page was from when I was 17, after I'd been held captive for three days."Escaped on her own. Did not reveal heir's location. Pass."Nobody wrote down that my leg was broken.Nobody wrote down that my wrists were rubbed raw.And nobody wrote down that I'd waited alone in a warehouse all night. In those records, every injury I'd suffered had been reduced to another performance metric I was expected to improve. Some pages ha

After my body was brought back to the estate, Mom walked into my room for the first time. She said she wanted to pick out something for me to be buried in.A maid opened the closet. Inside were dozens of black suits, all neatly hung and identical to Theo's.Mom froze. "Where are Daisy's own clothes?"The maid lowered her head and answered quietly. "Daisy hasn't had many clothes of her own since she was 12. You said a stand-in had to be ready for a job at any time, so she'd have no use for dresses or anything too bright."Mom's hand stopped on a row of black ties.I floated by the door and watched her go through them one by one. She'd seen all of those clothes before. She'd just never thought there was anything wrong with them. She took out one of the suits and noticed a tiny D stitched inside the cuff. I'd sewn it myself.I did it in secret when I was 15.Every piece of clothing I owned reminded me whose stand-in I was, so I only dared to hide my name where no one would see it.Mom sta

After a long moment, he slowly pulled his hand away. "Daisy... is dead."Mom didn't seem to understand. She froze for a moment, then lunged forward and grabbed my hand. "That's impossible! Look, she's still trying to defend herself!"Dad didn't say a word. Grim-faced, he came over and stared down at my face.Theo stood nearby, his face almost completely drained of color.Dr. Russo checked my pupils and breathing again, then said quietly, "Mr. Valenti, there really is no pulse."Mom shook her head, crying. "She's pulled through worse before. She'll pull through this time too. Doctor, check again."Dad finally spoke, his voice rough. "Try again."Dr. Russo looked down at the gunshot wound in my abdomen and the bandage soaked through with blood. "The bullet didn't hit her heart, and it didn't hit her head."Dad's head snapped up.But the doctor offered no hope. "What killed her was the blood loss. She kept pressure on the wound herself, which is why she survived as long as she did. If you

Grandpa followed the blood trail into the hills, with Theo right behind him.But Dad stopped Theo again and stationed two bodyguards at Theo's side."You're the heir. The rival family might still have people out here. You can't be out in front."Theo whipped around. For the first time, he sounded angry. "Uncle Paolo, Daisy's your own daughter. When she came up here alone, why weren't you worried about her?"Dad froze for only a second. Then he said coldly, "Because you're the heir. Her job is to stand between you and danger."In Dad's eyes, Theo couldn't be the one who got hurt. I could. As long as Theo was left standing, it didn't matter who went down, even if it was his own daughter.Only after Grandpa snapped at them did they continue. Before long, they found a torn piece of a black necktie, a bloodstained glove, and an empty magazine in the woods.Dad picked up the magazine. He spoke as if he were grading my performance. "She could still shoot, so she could still fight back. At lea
