Chapter 4

Author: Yanrise
Grandpa followed the blood trail into the hills, with Theo right behind him.

But Dad stopped Theo again and stationed two bodyguards at Theo's side.

"You're the heir. The rival family might still have people out here. You can't be out in front."

Theo whipped around. For the first time, he sounded angry. "Uncle Paolo, Daisy's your own daughter. When she came up here alone, why weren't you worried about her?"

Dad froze for only a second. Then he said coldly, "Because you're the heir. Her job is to stand between you and danger."

In Dad's eyes, Theo couldn't be the one who got hurt. I could. As long as Theo was left standing, it didn't matter who went down, even if it was his own daughter.

Only after Grandpa snapped at them did they continue.

Before long, they found a torn piece of a black necktie, a bloodstained glove, and an empty magazine in the woods.

Dad picked up the magazine. He spoke as if he were grading my performance. "She could still shoot, so she could still fight back. At least she didn't embarrass us on this job."

Soon, they found my phone in the grass.

The screen was cracked. The last call on it was to Dad.

Grandpa picked it up and played the recording. My voice came through, quiet and breathless.

"Dad, I'm at North Hill. I've been sh—"

Then came Dad's cold voice. "Daisy, wait another half hour."

After that, the recording picked up a dull thud. That was the sound of me being shot.

I floated in front of Dad and reached desperately for his sleeve. "Dad, I really couldn't hold on anymore."

But my hand kept passing right through him.

Grandpa closed his eyes, his voice shaking. "She wasn't asking you to hurry up and come get her. She was trying to tell you she'd been shot."

Dad opened his mouth, but he still shook his head. "She's been training since she was a kid. If she can't get through something like this, all those years were for nothing."

Mom jumped right in. "If she really couldn't hold on, she should've made that clear. Now Theo's ceremony has been interrupted, and this was supposed to be the most important day of his life."

Grandpa didn't argue with them. Then he remembered an abandoned ranger's cabin deep in the North Hill woods. He'd taken me there when I was little, and it still had water and basic first-aid supplies.

"If she could still move, she'd have gone there."

They practically ran.

The wooden door was half open. Inside, it was eerily quiet.

I was slumped against the wall in the far corner, still wearing Theo's black suit.

I was curled up beside the cabinet, my back pressed against the wall. One hand was pressed to my stomach, the blood long since dry. The other still held a gun aimed at the door.

Dad's eyes lit up. "See? I told you she was fine. Daisy, I'll let it slide this time. From now on, when the family has something important going on, don't bother us over some little injury."

Mom started in on me too. "What were you calling for if you were fine? Theo left before his ceremony was even over to come find you."

When I didn't answer, their faces darkened. "Get out here. Theo came all this way to get you."

Before, whenever Dad spoke to me in that tone, I'd be on my feet in a second.

But this time, I really couldn't get up.

Grandpa and Theo came over and crouched in front of me. Grandpa carefully touched my shoulder. My body didn't respond at all.

Grandpa's expression finally changed. "Daisy?"

He took hold of my shoulder and slowly turned my stiff body toward him.

A second later, the gun fell from my hand and hit the floor.

Dr. Russo dropped to his knees beside me and pressed trembling fingers to my neck.

A few seconds later, his fingers went still.

I didn't disappear right away. After the funeral, I stayed at the Valenti estate for a long time.Mom went into my room every day.She put the black suits away one by one, but she could never bring herself to throw them out.Once, she used my wish list to buy enough dresses to fill an entire closet. When a maid asked if she should get rid of the old suits, Mom suddenly burst into tears. She had finally understood that no matter how many dresses she bought, I'd never come back to wear them.Later, Mom started going to an orphanage on the edge of the city every week. Many of the girls there were around seven or eight, just as I had been. The first time she went, a little girl with short hair tugged on her hand and asked, "Do you have a daughter?"Mom stood there for a long time. Finally, with red eyes, she nodded. "I do."But I lost her."After that, she bought dresses and cakes for the children and remembered every one of their birthdays. But she never said she was doing it for me.She

On the day of the funeral, Mom got me a white dress after all.It wasn't because Grandpa had forgiven her.It was only because he'd said the dead should be dressed in the clothes they would have wanted to wear. Her hands shook the entire time she dressed me.She found a pearl hair clip in my drawer that I'd bought in secret when I was little. But when she picked it up, she realized my hair was still so short that the clip had almost nothing to grip. She tried again and again. In the end, the clip slipped out of my hair.Mom suddenly crumpled against the side of the casket, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. "Daisy, I'm sorry. I'll let you grow your hair out now, okay?"I stood behind her and didn't answer. Those were the words I'd wanted to hear more than anything.Every time Dad cut my hair, I'd secretly wonder why Mom never spoke up to stop him.But she never did. Not once. Now she was finally willing. But dead people's hair doesn't grow.Dad stood on the other side of the cas

The next day, Theo shut himself in the training room.He had someone bring out all 13 years' worth of my mission records.I'd never been allowed to see any of them.Dad said a stand-in only needed to follow orders. She didn't need to know how she was being graded. The first record was from when I was seven."Gait not similar enough. Continue training."The second was from when I was shot at age 11."A deviation from the decoy route allowed a second group to get close to the heir. Mission score: 70."When Theo read that, his fingers tightened around the page. The next page was from when I was 17, after I'd been held captive for three days."Escaped on her own. Did not reveal heir's location. Pass."Nobody wrote down that my leg was broken.Nobody wrote down that my wrists were rubbed raw.And nobody wrote down that I'd waited alone in a warehouse all night. In those records, every injury I'd suffered had been reduced to another performance metric I was expected to improve. Some pages ha

After my body was brought back to the estate, Mom walked into my room for the first time. She said she wanted to pick out something for me to be buried in.A maid opened the closet. Inside were dozens of black suits, all neatly hung and identical to Theo's.Mom froze. "Where are Daisy's own clothes?"The maid lowered her head and answered quietly. "Daisy hasn't had many clothes of her own since she was 12. You said a stand-in had to be ready for a job at any time, so she'd have no use for dresses or anything too bright."Mom's hand stopped on a row of black ties.I floated by the door and watched her go through them one by one. She'd seen all of those clothes before. She'd just never thought there was anything wrong with them. She took out one of the suits and noticed a tiny D stitched inside the cuff. I'd sewn it myself.I did it in secret when I was 15.Every piece of clothing I owned reminded me whose stand-in I was, so I only dared to hide my name where no one would see it.Mom sta

After a long moment, he slowly pulled his hand away. "Daisy... is dead."Mom didn't seem to understand. She froze for a moment, then lunged forward and grabbed my hand. "That's impossible! Look, she's still trying to defend herself!"Dad didn't say a word. Grim-faced, he came over and stared down at my face.Theo stood nearby, his face almost completely drained of color.Dr. Russo checked my pupils and breathing again, then said quietly, "Mr. Valenti, there really is no pulse."Mom shook her head, crying. "She's pulled through worse before. She'll pull through this time too. Doctor, check again."Dad finally spoke, his voice rough. "Try again."Dr. Russo looked down at the gunshot wound in my abdomen and the bandage soaked through with blood. "The bullet didn't hit her heart, and it didn't hit her head."Dad's head snapped up.But the doctor offered no hope. "What killed her was the blood loss. She kept pressure on the wound herself, which is why she survived as long as she did. If you
