Chapter 1

My husband, William Aldous, instantly pulled a face. His expression was dark.

“What is it this time, Sonnet? There’s a limit to this kind of drama. Divorce isn’t something you casually bring up.”

I stared at him blankly, and a flicker of confusion washed over me.

I did not understand why he would react this way. After all, I had been playing by his rules the whole time.

Each time before this, I was the one handing over what was mine, cutting a deal with him, just so Jolie Howard could get what she wanted.

I pulled my name from the employee-of-the-month competition and handed over the project’s core that I had poured my blood, sweat, and tears into. Bit by bit, I was erased from the company we had built from the ground up.

Here I was, putting my marriage on the line to save my mother. This was supposed to be exactly what he wanted. So, why was he upset?

I was on the verge of crying, but I held it back.

I just looked at him calmly. “I’m not trying to make a scene. This is how it’s always gone. I’m just giving you what you wanted, what Jolie wanted.”

Hearing this, his tone softened a little.

“Sonnet, are you still upset about what happened at the company?

“Jolie isn’t like you. You’re strong and smart. You could walk out of here tomorrow and be just fine anywhere.

“But Jolie’s fragile. She can’t handle pressure. She needs someone to support her and guide her along.”

Hearing this, I did not know whether to cry or to laugh.

I remembered the time when he had first met Jolie.

She was overseas when someone had robbed her. She stood on the street, completely at a loss.

William happened to be passing by. He chased after the robber and got her purse back.

At that time, she was crying as she said to him cautiously, “Let me treat you to a meal to thank you, so we’re even.”

It was just a simple gesture of gratitude, but William kept bringing it up after he came home.

“Sonnet, you should learn a thing or two from Jolie. If you want someone’s help, you have to give something in return. There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose and softened his tone. “I’ll ask Harold to perform Wilma’s surgery. Rest assured.”

He hesitated, as if he wanted to say more but stopped himself.

After a long while, he said, “But Sonnet, here’s the deal. Give Jolie that rosary I got from the church six years ago. She hasn’t been well lately. She needs it.”

I instinctively clenched the rosary in my pocket.

Six years ago, I was in a car accident and spent seven days in the ICU in a coma.

William drove through a blizzard to a church on the outskirts of town. He knelt at the altar all night, praying with the rosary, and brought it back for me.

He was exhausted, but he stayed by my side and said, “Sonnet, as long as you’re safe, I don’t need anything else.”

All these years, whenever I felt disappointed in this marriage, I would hold this rosary.

I always believed that somewhere inside him, the William who once cared for me so deeply was still there.

I finally realized that William had vanished the day he met Jolie.

“Okay.”

I suppressed the bitterness in my heart, took the rosary from my pocket, and gave it to him.

When he saw me do that, he actually tried to comfort me for once. “Once things settle down, I’ll go back to the church and get you another one just like it.”

I shook my head. “Don’t bother.”

He could get an identical rosary. However, he was no longer the person he once was.

I turned and rushed to the hospital.

When I entered, I saw Jolie sitting by my mother’s bedside.

She spoke to my mother with a smile on her face, yet every word was sharp.

“Mrs. Elder, you haven’t heard?

“William hasn’t set foot in that house in half a year.

“Instead of letting Sonnet stay trapped in a marriage that’s already over, why don’t you convince her to get a divorce? Let William and me be together.”

After the overseas project stabilized, I took a week off and went back to my hometown.I brought a bouquet of white carnations and went to my mother’s grave.“Mom, I came to see you.“Things at the company are just about wrapped up. Dylan’s a good guy. I’m in good hands with him, so don’t worry. I’ll be okay.”I sat in front of the gravestone and talked to her for a long time, just like when I was little and sat in the courtyard chatting to her about things that happened at school. It was not until dark that I finally left the cemetery. On the way back, I passed a small convenience store. I got out of the car to buy water, and a familiar voice came from behind me.“Hey, can I get a pack of cigarettes?”It was William. I stood in front of the freezer, watching him quietly. He was thinner than the last time I saw him. His face was sallow, and dark circles hung heavy under his eyes. After he paid and lit a cigarette, he saw me.He instinctively stubbed it out.In the past,

I worked around the clock with my team for three months straight, and we finally locked in two key supply chains.Occasionally, when I scrolled through industry news, I would still see William’s name pop up.After Aldous Corporation went bankrupt, he sold off every property and vehicle under his name and moved to an old neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. Some people in the industry said he had hit rock bottom. Others said he was going around, trying to find out anything about me.I ignored all of it.I was done playing by his rules. One evening, I had just finished a cross-border video conference when my assistant, Paul Griffin, knocked and walked in.“Ms. Elder, there’s someone here to see you in the lobby.”I frowned. “Send him up.”To my surprise, a few minutes later, William showed up in my office. He had lost a lot of weight, and his hair had started to grey. He was even wearing the same trench coat I had bought him six years ago. It was hard to believe this wa

William was rendered speechless and could no longer utter a single word.As I looked at him, I remembered every deal he had ever made with me.“You said it yourself, remember? There’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you want help, you pay for it.“Well, now it’s your turn to pay.”He froze, speechless. After a long silence, he finally said in a low voice, “But Sonnet, we built this company together from the ground up. Are you really okay with burning it all down?”Before I could speak, he continued, “You can’t take down Aldous Corporation. Our foundations are strong. Even with Dylan backing you, we won’t fold that easily.”I gave a small nod, picked up my handbag, and said, “We’ll see about that.”Over the next six months, I released evidence of illegal financing from Aldous Corporation’s expansion after I left. I also got several partners on board to pull out of their long-term contracts.Dylan kept the money flowing and the pressure on. Aldous Corporation’s cash flow was a

I went back to my hometown. Before she passed, my mother always said the air was better here and that she wanted to come back and stay for a while.I had promised to bring her back. In the end, I was the only one who came back.I buried my mother in the cemetery on the back hill of my hometown, right next to my grandmother. The day my mother was buried, the weather was beautiful, yet I felt cold all over the entire time.I stayed in the family house for a week.It was not until the evening of the eighth day that I finally finished the dishes and took a shower. Then, I sat down at the desk, opened my phone, and scrolled through my contacts until I found Dylan Percy’s number.Dylan was William’s biggest business competitor. From the day I was removed from the company, he had been sending me messages, saying I was welcome to join him anytime.Back then, I refused.William and I had built the company together. I could not bear to let it go.Even after being erased from the c

“Get someone to investigate it now!”Jolie’s face went deathly pale. Her legs nearly gave out.In less than two hours, the investigation results came out.Timothy pulled strings with the operating room nurses to bump my mother’s surgery down the list, using the excuse that Harold had to handle an emergency first. As for the pregnancy report, it had been tampered with, and the system logs showed Timothy was the one who did it.When all the evidence was laid out in front of William, he grabbed Jolie by the throat and pinned her against the wall. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”Jolie’s face went red as he choked her. She struggled desperately but could barely make a sound.“William... please... let go of me…”“Wilma is dead because of you. You tricked me into killing my own baby! Jolie, you’re a killer!”“That’s enough!”Harold rushed forward and pried his hands apart.Jolie slid to the floor, clutching her neck and coughing violently.Harold’s face twisted with som

A heavy silence fell over the hospital corridor after Kelly said that.Jolie, who was standing beside William, covered her mouth.“No, that’s not possible. We were only a few minutes late. How could this happen?”Tears welled up in her eyes, falling right on cue.She turned to him, her voice choked as she said, “William, are they sure? How does something like this happen in just a few minutes?”He frowned at Kelly, and his voice was sharp with impatience. “How much did Sonnet pay you to cover for her?”Kelly’s sympathetic expression went completely blank the moment she heard those words. She looked up at him and scoffed. “Mr. Aldous, respectfully, don’t insult our professionalism.”Kelly did not bother to explain any further. She simply stepped aside and gestured for Harold to see for himself.Harold’s face was ashen. He looked at William and said in a cold voice tinged with anger, “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? This was critical. How could you have me examine Jolie first?“
