Chapter 4

Author: Eternity
Back at my apartment, Lucas nudged my slippers toward my feet.

He hung up my bag, put a glass of water on the table, then went into the bathroom to get the shower running. The hot water took forever in that building. He knew exactly how far to turn the tap.

He had learned all my little inconveniences. When I came home exhausted, he washed my delicates in the sink and hung them over the shower rail.

When the heater broke, he let me tuck my frozen feet against his stomach. Two days later, he had a new unit installed.

“I bought it for me,” he'd told Connor. “You try sleeping in a freezer.”

I stood in the bathroom doorway, holding a towel. I would miss being cared for like that. It still didn't make it acceptable for him to laugh about me with his friends.

The apartment was too small for a bigger bed. He'd measured once, then shoved the tape into a drawer. Paying for another apartment would have spoiled the experiment, so we learned to sleep pressed together.

That night, he curled around me as usual.

His palm settled at my waist. His breath warmed the back of my neck.

“Evie.”

He kissed the place beneath my ear.

For a moment, I went rigid. Then I gently moved his hand from my waist.

“I'm tired,” I whispered.

I shifted toward the edge of the bed, leaving a little space between us. His warmth was familiar. For a moment, I wanted to turn back and rest against him.

Instead, I pulled the blanket over my shoulder and stayed facing away.

Later, he fell asleep.

I slipped onto the little balcony and pulled the door almost shut. Through the glass, I could still see him, one arm stretched across the empty place I'd left.

I opened the London offer again.

Earlier that week, I'd tried to discuss it with Lucas. He'd kissed my forehead and said we'd talk later.

I wasn't waiting for that conversation anymore.

I checked the funding details and the start date once more.

Behind the glass, Lucas stirred, then rolled over.

I tapped Accept.

  • I Stopped Asking Him for Anything   Chapter 14

Evie POVA year after the café, Daniel and I got married in a small registry office with terrible parking.Maya arrived carrying my bouquet and one shoe.“The other one's in the taxi,” she announced. “Nobody panic.”I started laughing so hard she had to hold the flowers away from my dress.Through the open door, I could see Daniel talking to his sister. He looked up and caught my eye. There was no room full of people whose approval I had to earn before he could smile at me.He just smiled. The ring on my hand wasn't a surprise. We'd chosen both rings together after looking at our savings and deciding what mattered to us.So was getting married. It had been a conversation, not a rescue. Two months earlier, we'd sat on our kitchen floor assembling a bookshelf when Daniel asked whether I'd ever want to marry him.“You make that sound hypothetical,” I'd said.“I don't want to ambush you with a room full of candles.”“Good. We can't afford the fire damage.”He laughed, then grew serious.“I

Lucas POVI watched her reach the other side of the street. Then I went back inside and paid for my coffee. The server asked whether I wanted anything else. I nearly said yes, just to postpone leaving a place where Evie had been willing to sit with me.“No, thanks.”Outside, my driver opened the car door.“Home, sir?”“Home.”There was no other address I had a right to give him. That evening, my mother found me at the kitchen table, still wearing my jacket.“How was she?”“Well.”“And you?”I shook my head. She sat down beside me. For a while, we didn't speak.“I thought you could grow out of this without anyone getting hurt,” she said at last. “I saw more than I admitted.”“You weren't the one dating her.”“No. But I was the one teaching you that an apology could arrive in a box.”I looked at my wrists. I'd worn Evie's cuff links to the café. Part of me had hoped she'd notice. She hadn't mentioned them.I took them off and put them in my pocket. The next week, Connor approached me at

Evie POVI went back home in June to collect my degree and close the last account I couldn't handle from overseas.Maya lent me a suitcase with four working wheels. Daniel drove me to the station before sunrise.“Call when you land?”“I will.”“And if you don't want to see him, you don't have to.”“I know.”It had taken a long time to mean that.I emailed Lucas myself. One hour, a café near campus. There were things I wanted to say aloud, and I no longer needed him to answer them correctly. He was already there when I arrived. He stood, then stopped himself from coming toward me.“Hi, Evie.”“Hi.”He looked tired. Not theatrically ruined. Just older around the eyes.We ordered coffee. He asked about my work, and for ten minutes I told him things I used to wish he'd ask. Then he looked down at his cup.“I've rehearsed this conversation more times than I want to admit.”“What happens in your version?”“You let me try again.”I watched a server clear the next table.“That isn't why I came

Evie POVI met Daniel over a broken printer. He was crouched beside it, holding a strip of paper that seemed much longer than the machine itself.“Before you ask,” he said, “I have tried turning it off and on.”“I was going to ask whether it won.”“Decisively.”He worked on the neighboring research team. We spent twenty minutes rescuing my interview notes, then missed the same bus.Over the next month, we started leaving together on Thursdays. Sometimes we walked to the station. Sometimes we bought coffee and complained about spreadsheets. He didn't ask about the pale mark the necklace had left. By then it was almost gone. When he eventually asked me to dinner, I stared so long that he raised both hands.“Coffee can stay coffee.”“No. I want to.”“Okay.” He smiled. “Friday?”The restaurant had paper menus and candles in old wine bottles. I checked the prices before I sat down.Daniel noticed, but didn't make a performance of not noticing.“I invited you,” he said. “I'd like to get this

  • I Stopped Asking Him for Anything   Chapter 10

Lucas POVI found her name on a university research page.A photograph showed Evie standing beside three other students outside a brick building. She wore the green sweater I'd always thought was too thin. She was smiling at somebody beyond the camera. My assistant asked whether I wanted travel arrangements. The old answer was already in my mouth.Instead I said, “No.”Her email address was listed for research inquiries. Mine wasn't one. I stared at it for a long time before writing a single message, brief enough that she could read it without giving me an evening.I know you didn't invite me to contact you. I won't come to your home or your university. I owe you an apology, and I'd like to offer it if you're willing to hear it. If you aren't, I will leave you alone.I sent it before I could add anything designed to make her feel sorry for me.She didn't reply that day.Or the next.I went to work. I answered my mother's questions about Charlotte. I told her the truth when she asked wh

  • I Stopped Asking Him for Anything   Chapter 9

Evie POVLondon greeted me with rain and a suitcase wheel that broke outside the station.I stood beneath an awning, staring at the crooked handle. For one ridiculous second, I almost called Lucas. Then someone in a yellow raincoat asked whether I needed a hand, and I said yes.Her name was Maya. She was going the same way. We dragged the suitcase between us, stopping twice to laugh because the remaining wheel squeaked like an angry bird.“You moving in or escaping?” she asked.“Both, probably.”“Good place for it.”My room had a narrow bed, a desk, and a window overlooking somebody's bins. I loved it immediately. The graduate office had already approved a later start to my research hours. My supervisor, Dr. Bennett, met me the next morning with a timetable and a list of practical things I needed to arrange. When I apologized for the delay, she looked puzzled.“You were recovering. Now, which days work for you?”I had prepared a speech about how reliable I was. There was nowhere to put
