Chapter 2

Author: Tomato Bun
"Since you've found everyone something better, of course I'll respect the choice. I hope graduation goes smoothly for all of you."

I tilted my head. "If the wording bothers you, I'll change it. Shall I wish you all brilliant careers instead?"

"You—"

Brooke clearly hadn't expected me to fold. For once she couldn't get an accusation out fast enough.

The students glanced at one another, and the heat went out of the room.

"Brooke, did we read that wrong?"

"She never actually said we had to work at her family's plant."

"My dad says most places want a full three months before they'll certify anything. Morgan Components offered to sign off after two. That does sound like she was trying to help."

Brooke's face tightened. She stared at me, then pitched her voice louder.

"Don't let her play you. She's being reasonable so we'll drop our guard. The second we walk out that door she's calling our parents."

The room went still. Then the panic caught.

"Oh, God. If my mother finds out I haven't started an internship, I'm dead."

"I told my dad I already had a placement. He wired me three thousand for living expenses and I spent it on a trip. He'll kill me."

"My mom doesn't even know I'm short on credits. If she hears I skipped the internship, that's the end of my money."

Brooke knew exactly which fear to press. One sentence and they'd turned back on me.

"You're supposed to be an educator, and you're going to run to our parents like a kid telling on us?"

"You'll wreck the whole thing. We finally find a good job and you can't stand it."

"She's doing it on purpose. She wants us in her father's plant so she gets her cut."

Brooke's mouth curved.

"Ms. Morgan, getting between someone and their money is a serious thing to do. Drop the threats about our parents, or I promise you won't be teaching much longer."

I met her eyes without moving.

"Brooke, I do intend to talk to your families. You're adults, but you're still enrolled here, and I'm not signing off on a placement I can't verify."

I tapped the offer on her screen.

"Eighteen thousand a month for an intern, certification after thirty days, and an overseas retreat thrown in? There's nothing credible in that."

Brooke opened her mouth, but Diane snapped her lesson planner shut before a word got out.

"Eighteen thousand a month? For an internship? And they're flying you overseas?"

She pushed her glasses up and stood.

"Claire's right. That's wrong on its face."

She turned to the students.

"My nephew graduated last year and took one of these 'high-paying opportunities.'

"He got there and found out it was a recruitment pyramid. He never earned a cent, and he lost twenty thousand of his own money on top of it.

"You're twenty-two. You don't have the experience to spot a professional operation when it's dressed up nicely."

Howard Grant nodded from the next desk.

"No legitimate employer pays a new intern eighteen thousand a month and adds an international trip. The university has to check this company out, and your parents need to hear about it."

Brooke's face changed. She'd braced for a fight with me, not a room full of faculty trading stories about fake job offers.

A few of the more cautious students started looking at her differently.

"Brooke, maybe I should sit this one out. It's starting to scare me."

"Same. You keep saying the company's great, but none of us even knows what they actually do."

  • I Stopped Saving My Students   Chapter 10

Marcus Hale was dismissed and referred to prosecutors for criminal negligence and assisting a fraud.According to the reporting, on the day they came for him he broke down outside his father's house and begged for half an hour to be pulled out of it.His father had spent his career as a senior official with the state education board. In the end, all he said was: you reap what you sow.Brooke was formally charged with acting as an intermediary, taking recruitment payments, and helping a criminal organization lure her classmates out of the country.A psychiatric evaluation found she'd been fully competent throughout the planning and the recruiting, and fully responsible for what she did.Her parents came to campus to file her withdrawal paperwork. I watched from across the quad. Her mother could barely stay on her feet for crying. Her father's face was iron-gray, and his hand shook through every signature. They walked out one behind the other, both of them stooped like something h

"I'm fine, Dad."Of course nothing about it was fine.Over the following weeks the scandal rolled downhill and picked up everything in its path. The state education board opened an investigation. Police coordinated across borders. Reporters chased every new development, and the public got angrier by the day.It sat at the top of the trending lists for the better part of a week. The first headlines read, "Twenty-Seven Students Vanish Overseas After University-Approved Internship." Then, "Inside the Recruitment Pipeline Behind Fake Job Offers." Then, "Video: Administrator Destroys Adviser's Phone to Stop Parent Calls."Once the office recording got out, the clip of Marcus hurling my phone through the window and threatening me was everywhere. The comments called him criminally negligent and said he'd treated a room full of kids as disposable. Then investigators surfaced his private messages with Brooke. Every exchange in them was intimate.Brooke's loan records came out too, along

"She went with them," I said quietly.Marcus spun toward me. The panic in his eyes turned into something uglier."You knew that company was dirty, didn't you? That's why you were so determined to make those calls."You did it on purpose. This was your cohort, and you let them walk out so you could hang the whole thing on me."I watched him come apart and let out a small, disbelieving laugh."Director Hale, don't start biting at everyone in the room because it's gone wrong."I wanted to call the parents because the offer wasn't safe and because telling them was my job."I glanced toward the corner of the ceiling."The office is monitored, and half the faculty was standing right there. The recording will show exactly what you said and what you did — including the part where you took my authority over that cohort away from me."Marcus went very still.Diane came out from behind the crowd. Her voice wasn't loud, but it didn't waver."President Wallace, I witnessed it. Director H

"Don't give us the runaround!"A middle-aged man cut me off."I'm asking you one thing. Where is my son? You're his adviser. Did you know he was going off on an internship?""I did know." I raised a hand to finish. "Brooke Hayes brought the placement to the cohort as a company owned by a relative of hers. Eighteen thousand a month, overseas retreat included."My first reaction was that it wasn't credible, and I said right there that I was going to call every one of you.""So did you?" a woman demanded.Gerald frowned at me too."Ms. Morgan, if you suspected fraud, why didn't you contact the parents? Why wasn't the employer flagged to this office?"I looked at him, then at Marcus, pale and silent in the corner."Because Director Hale ordered me to stay out of it."Marcus jerked upright."Claire, don't lie. I never said any such thing."I turned away from him and spoke to the room."I tried to make those calls from my office. Director Hale stopped me. He told me he'd inspect

Dylan was loud on an ordinary day and no smarter in a crisis. He shoved his way forward, planted himself next to Brooke, put his hands on his hips, and shouted at the two of them."Who do you think you're talking to? Brooke is the chairman's niece. She spoke to him before we ever got on this plane."Is this how you treat her people? Wait until we get there — I'll have the chairman fire every one of—""Dylan!"Brooke yanked his arm so hard her voice cracked.Too late. The man with the gold tooth stopped smiling. He came up out of his seat, his head nearly brushing the roof, and drove a foot into Dylan's stomach. Then he reached into the black bag and drew a short knife."Say it again. Who exactly are you yelling at?"The bus went dead silent.Rachel screamed and clapped a hand over her mouth. Liam froze. Lily slid down behind her seat.Dylan's face went from red to white. His lips shook."What... what do you want?"The man laughed and tapped the flat of the blade against D

The bus had been driving for almost two hours with no sign of a destination.Rachel pressed her face to the window, stared for a long moment, then tapped Liam Price in the seat ahead of her."Have you checked the map? Are we going the wrong way?"Liam swiped at his screen and passed the phone back, frowning."I've been watching it. The marker says we're deep in the mountains. And look."He turned the screen around. No service. The color went out of Rachel's face. She nudged Dylan and dropped her voice."Do you have a signal?"He pulled out his phone and his brow furrowed."No. Nothing. Maybe there aren't enough towers out here."We've been driving two hours. Why does the road keep getting worse?"Zoe Miller leaned over from the row behind, a tremor working into her voice."I thought they were taking us for massages. Are we getting them on a mountain?"The whispering got louder. Students who'd been sprawled asleep across their seats started waking up.Lily Hart rubbed her
